Good News Reflection 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2018
Numbers 11:25-29 Ps 19:8, 10, 12-14
James 5:1-6 Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48
Unexpected partners Jesus says in this Sunday's Gospel reading that whoever is not against us is for us. The reality of this often
takes us by surprise in unexpected partners.
On the one hand, it can seem like someone is against us when really they are not. For example, when someone
speaks a truth that we don't want to hear, that person seems to be our enemy while in fact they are God's
chosen prophet.
At other times, people side with us but only for their own agenda; they're not interested in assisting the purpos-
es that God has for our lives.
And sometimes we encounter people who are doing the Lord's work but not in the way that we expect them to,
and so we assume that they are not doing what God wants them to do. Have you ever asked someone to pray
for a certain intention and he/she prayed the opposite of what you intended?
Years ago, when my husband's company was laying off most of its employees, I asked a friend to pray for him
so that he could find a new job, but she prayed instead for the company so that he wouldn't have to leave it.
My expectations were for him to find a healthier company in which to work. I didn't like her prayer, but in the
end, I realized that she was the only friend who had prayed exactly what the Lord had wanted!
To figure out whether someone is truly against us or is, in fact, God's instrument for us, we have to separate
ourselves from the heat and frustrations of the experience and sit quietly with Jesus. After we vent to him our
fears and anger and then forgive those who seem to be against us, we will be open to hearing a more divine
assessment of the situation.
Even when someone truly is acting against us, when we sit quietly in prayer, seeking a word of knowledge or
wisdom from the Holy Spirit, we can discover that God is for us and that's what matters most. He gives us
encouragement and strength to endure any troubles.
Questions for Personal Reflection:
Who is telling you something that you don't like hearing? Is it possible that the Lord is speaking through this
person? Whom have you trusted that turned out to be a false friend or a bad influence which harmed your
faith? Who has been an unexpected instrument of the Lord on your spiritual journey?
Questions for Community Faith Sharing:
When have you been startled to discover that someone who did not seem to be "of the Lord" was really doing
the Lord's work? What did the Lord accomplish through this unexpected source? What did you learn from it?

Reflexión de las Buenas Nuevas 26to. Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Septiembre 30, 2018
Números 11, 25-29 Sal 19, 8.10.12-14
Santiago 5, 1-6 Marcos 9, 38-43.45.47-48
¿Le has

be given to you!’ (Lk 11:9).

The Marriage in Christ Seminar: Please join us for the Marriage in Christ
Seminar. Over time busy couples can fall into a rut and we begin to take our spouse for
granted. We can forget how much we love each other. The five week Marriage in Christ
seminar offers daily activities that couples can do in as little as 15-20 minutes a day. These activities are
designed to deepen our friendship with God and with out spouse. The format for each day is easy to follow.
Couples pray together each day, talk about things—the things we used to talk about when we were getting
to know each other. The Marriage in Christ seminar offers practical suggestions for putting our love into
action and deepening our friendship.
Mondays, October 15 thru November 12, 6:30-8:30pm

Notes from the Liturgist
THE HOLY ROSARY “The Holy Rosary (/ˈroʊzəri/; Latin: rosarium, in the sense of "crown of roses" or "garland of roses"), also known as the Dominican Rosary, refers to a form of prayer used in the Catholic Church and to the string of knots or beads used to count the component prayers. When used for the prayer, the word is usually capitalized ("the Rosary"), as is customary for other names of prayers, such as "the Lord's Prayer", and "the Hail Mary"; when referring to the beads, it is written with a lower-case initial letter ("a rosary").
The prayers that comprise the Rosary are arranged in sets of ten Hail Marys, called decades. Each decade is preceded by one Lord's Prayer and followed by one Glory Be. During recitation of each set, thought is given to one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which recall events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Five decades are recited per rosary. Other prayers are sometimes added before or after each decade. Rosary beads are an aid towards saying these prayers in the proper sequence.
A standard 15 Mysteries of the Rosary, based on the long-standing custom, was established by Pope Pius V during the 16th century, grouping the mysteries in three sets: the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries. During 2002 Pope John Paul II said that it is fitting that a new set of five be added, termed the Luminous Mysteries, bringing the total number of mysteries to 20. The Glorious mysteries are said on Sunday and Wednesday, the Joyful on Monday and Saturday, the Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, and the Luminous Mysteries are said on Thursday. Usually five decades are recited in a session.”

The month of October is the month of the Holy Rosary. The Holy Rosary is considered a perfect prayer because it reflects the story of our salvation. When we pray the Holy Rosary, we meditate on the life of Jesus and Mary. It is a simple, humble prayer so much like Mary.
My dear friends, let us pray the Holy Rosary together. We ask for the intercession of the Blessed Mother to pray for us. Our Blessed Mother always grants our request. She joins her prayer to ours. Make that habit to pray the Holy Rosary because what Mary asks she always receives, Jesus can never say no to whatever His Mother asks for.
For the month of October, we will have a 24/7 Praying the Holy Rosary and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel here in our parish. I am inviting you all to come and pray anytime.

“We Count” Needs Help The We Count ministry is comprised of
some dedicated parishioners who volunteer to count the collection
monies on Mondays. There are four teams of four who each meet once a
month. We start each week with a prayer to our patron, St. Matthew, to
guide us. Recently and sadly, we lost one of our members. We are looking for someone to replace him. If you would be able to spend time on a Monday morning each
month to help count and take the money to the bank, please contact

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Elementary Religious Education
Did You Know…? Here at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish we offer religious education classes for kids from age
3 to 5th grade. We also include a family session once a month so that entire families can
strengthen their faith together. We meet three Sundays a month from 9:40 am to 10:45 am.
The first and second Sundays the children are in grade-level classroom style classes. The third
Sunday of the month the whole family meets in the gym for family faith and fellowship. Classes
began on September 16, but it isn’t too late to sign up! Registration forms for both religious
education and First Communion are available online, on the Faith Formation bulletin board, in
the office, or down in the education center. If you have questions about any of our classes,
please email suzi_stmarys@comcast.net or just come down to the education center on Sunday
morning.
Plan Your Celebration
Just as you plan celebrations of your
early Sacraments, you can also pre-plan your final sending forth - your funeral. Many people wait
until the moment is upon them, leaving extra stress on their loved ones. Some people feel that to
address the event is to somehow bring it upon you all the quicker.
We would like to dispel some of the fears and misunderstandings
about funerals. Please come to our Funeral Pre-planning workshop
on Saturday, October 27th from 9:30am-12:30pm in the Gathering
Space. Monsignor Gerard O'Connor from the Archdiocese will talk
about Church teachings on funerals. Wally Ordeman of Fisher Funeral Home will
speak about what services are often provided by funeral homes. Pam Henkel of Mt. Calvary &
Gethsemane Catholic Funeral Services will give us information about the services typically
provided by cemeteries.
As many of our parishioners are veterans, we will have Traci Logan
from the US. Department of Veterans Affairs come to explain what
options veterans' families have open to them. Our last speaker will
be Carmen Gaston from the Archdiocese who will cover the role of
estate planning, and how to help with taxes up to and including inheritance tax. Finally, we will open
the floor for all attendees to go around to the tables of many funeral homes, cemeteries and
parishes within our vicariate. There you can glean information more specific to you.
For more information, see the posters at the doors. Everyone is welcome!
Bring family and friends, whether they are local or not. The information will be
fairly general, so will apply to other locations. Refreshments will be available.
There is no charge, but free will offerings will be gratefully accepted.

Care for Creation
“Our mistreatment of the natural
world diminishes our own dignity
and sacredness, not only because
we are destroying resources that
future generations of humans need,
but because we are engaging in
actions that contradict what it
means to be human. Our tradition
calls us to protect the life and digni-
ty of the human person, and it is
increasingly clear that this task can-
not be separated from the care and
defense of all creation.”
