AP ES ARTIFACT! LT #1: I can set myself up for success for the APES artifact. LT #2: I can explain what NPP is and why it is important.

Let’s reflect a little on last year’s lab report… •  5 minutes • One Mic! 1.  You tell Liu- what was the topic of last year’s lab report? 2.  What sections of the lab were easy to become proficient

in? Which were hard? 3.  What did you like about the lab overall? What did you

not like about the lab overall?

Net Primary Productivity (NPP) Lab Description and Benchmarks (Cycle 3)

• Silently T4 for 3 minutes • Write down 1 question you have on the top of the page.

• Note that you’ll be getting a big lab manual in about 10 minutes…

Liu Answers • 3 min to answer your questions! J

When will I need to sit with my group?

• Liu will tell you at the beginning of the period before you’ve entered the classroom!

• During the actual lab (lab setup and data collection)

• While working on sections in the lab manual • During peer-editing sections on laptops

ARTIFACT FOLDERS! (your briefcase for this lab) • You only get 1 for free.. • These folders stay at EA unless if homework related to Artifact is assigned

• What you put in it: All handouts related to the Artifact

• Red Sharpies (Hurry and pass them around! I’m taking them back after 2 minutes!)

• Write down on tab: • Full name , Period #

OFFICIAL LAB MANUAL

• Write your name on it. Right now. • You get 1 for free.. • Lost it? New one costs you 50% deduction from most recent homework quiz…

• Can only take home if you are behind

• Useful for if you are out sick and want to know ahead of time what we’re doing in class…(Will be uploaded online)

OFFICIAL LAB MANUAL • Let’s look through it together J • Write down any questions you have on the margins of pages.

• Will call on people to ask: •  What you like J •  Suggestions for improvements L

You tell Liu (2 min) • What do you like about this manual? • What do you think would make this a more useful manual?

• Questions?

NET PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY (TITLE OF YOUR CORNELL NOTES)

LT #2: I can explain what NPP is and why it is important.

Reminders about Liu’s Cornell Notes

• Red/orange = header (left side of line)

• Black text = notes for you to paraphrase/copy down

• Grey text = Liu’s talking points (don’t need to write these down)

Wtf is “NPP”? • Let’s start from scratch, even if you did the homework/looked up NPP on your own.

Just look at the words for a moment.

NET PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY (NPP)

What trophic level do the letters in blue remind you of?

NET PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY (NPP)

You tell Liu- What is a primary producer???

NET PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY (NPP)

You tell Liu- What is a primary producer??? (don’t need to copy down unless if you forgot this info) Primary producers (no new info, this is review) • Also known as an autotroph (“auto”= self, “troph”= feed)

• Plants! • They capture energy from the sun, turn it into sugars to feed themselves and consumers

• They are the “primary” source of energy in any ecosystem (can see this from an energy pyramid)

Energy Pyramid/ Rule of 10 This is why plants are the most important trophic level!

Another Example

Who run the world? Producers

Primary Production • Primary Production: General term for mount of energy converted from the sun by primary producers (plants) in an ecosystem.

• RATE of primary production: Amount of solar energy converted over a specific period of TIME.

What do the letters in red mean?

NET PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY (NPP)

What about the word “net”?

Imagine a literal net… • Picture of net with hole

Some is lost

What stays in the “net” is what you actually get to keep

Net Primary Production • Definition: Amount of energy leftover after autotrophs have met their metabolic needs (needs for survival).

• Similar to idea of “profit” from Algebra 2 (what’s left after costs are taken out)

• Energy “profit” can be used to create MORE biomass (ex: plants can grow extra seeds and leaves)

Gross Primary Production • TOTAL amount of energy fixed by autotrophs.

• Equivalent to “revenue” in nature • Costs not taken out yet

• Revenue = Profit + cost

Energy Equation

• GPP = R + NPP • Respiration= • Gross Primary Production (total energy)= Respiration (energy cost) + Net Primary Production (energy profit)

How is NPP changed? • Relies on two factors: 1.  Quality and quantity of water 2.  Availability of sunlight

• Why? Because NPP relies on PHOTOSYNTHESIS, and photosynthesis requires water and sunlight.

Check for Understanding • If deserts have so much sunlight, why do they have such low NPP?

• If tropical rainforests are so dark with all the shade from the trees, why do they have such high NPP?
