An apprenticeship is a legal contract between an employer and apprentice that combines training and learning on-the-job to achieve a nationally recognised qualification.

Apprenticeship qualifications can sometimes be completed at your place of work - the training provider will come to you, helping to limit the disruption to the day-to-day operations of your business.

Apprenticeships take up to 4 years to complete and include industries such as:

 Automotive

 Building and Construction

 Community Services, Health and Education

 Electrical

 Food

 Metals, Manufacturing and Services

 Wholesale, Retail and Personal Services

 And more…

Recognition of prior learningApprentices may receive formal recognition of their existing skills and knowledge to reduce the amount of study they must complete. This is assessed by your chosen Registered Training Organisation.

A few practical tips

The process of inducting, coaching, mentoring and retaining apprentices until they complete their apprenticeship can seem daunting, but by following a few practical tips you can enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship and a successful and sustainable program for your business.

InductionInduction of your apprentices is a critically important component of ensuring the success of an apprenticeship program in your business. Employers who have a structured induction program are more likely to have more engaged and productive apprentices. Here are some tips to get you started:

Make up an induction pack for your apprentice’s first day and take the time to sit down and go through it with them

Ensure your ways of working are explained to your apprentice and set your expectations for all the little things clearly

 Have all their equipment/materials ready

Introduce them to each of the team and assign a mentor/buddy

Create a time to meet regularly to discuss their progress

A few practical tips

Coaching and mentoringIt is important to provide continuous coaching and mentoring throughout the apprenticeship program to ensure success for both the business and the individual.

Avoid simply telling your apprentices what to do, getting them to think will keep them interested and motivated

Engage your apprentices by asking how they might approach something, hear what they have to say and give them feedback

Set your apprentice some achieveable goals

Provide feedback – whether it is the right or wrong choice, provide feedback to congratulate or explain why it’s not the best way to approach and show how you would like it to be done

Review and reinforce the things they did well

Engage and motivate Get to know them and find out what they are good at

Help them see the big picture – motivate them to see the benefits of their hard work

 Create a positive environment

 Create opportunities to grow

Don’t forget to have a laugh with them occasionally
