TEACHER BIBLE STUDY Jesus Was Anointed
Matthew 26:6-‐13; Mark 14:3-‐9; John 12:1-‐8 Matthew, Mark, and John give an account of Jesus’ anointing six days before Passover. Jesus was in Bethany, eating supper at Simon the leper’s house. Since lepers were social outcasts, Simon may have been healed from his leprosy by Jesus. Jesus and His disciples attended the supper, as did Jesus’ friends Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. While Jesus was reclining at the table, Mary broke open an expensive alabaster jar of pure nard, a fragrance imported from India. Alabaster was an expensive form of marble. Alabaster jars were intricately crafted and sealed so that to open the jar, the owner would have to break it, and the perfumes or oils within the jar would be used immediately. Mary could not pour out a little bit of the nard and keep the rest for herself. Out of sincere and total devotion, Mary poured all of the nard onto Jesus. In stark contrast to Mary’s display of love, Judas Iscariot reacted with indignation. In Matthew’s account, the other disciples also wondered why Mary had not sold the nard—worth about a worker’s yearly wage—and given it to the poor. John states that Judas was not altruistic; Judas was in fact pilfering money from Jesus’ ministry. (See John 12:6.) “Leave her alone,” Jesus said. “She has kept it for the day of My burial” (John 12:7). The disciples would have plenty of time to minister to the poor, but Jesus would die in less than a week. Mary probably had no way of knowing what her offering of love and devotion would have signified, but Jesus said that from that moment on, people would remember what she had done for Him. Unlike the rich young ruler who thought the cost of following Christ was too high (Mark 10:22), Mary believed that Jesus holds more value than costly perfume. As you teach kids, emphasize that Mary’s actions were not wasteful but worshipful. By allowing Mary to anoint Him, Jesus showed that He is more valuable than anything. Jesus knew He would soon die for sinners, be buried, and rise from the dead on the third day. Those who trust in His death and resurrection will receive eternal life.

THE BIBLE STORY
Jesus Was Anointed Matthew 26:6-‐13; Mark 14:3-‐9; John 12:1-‐8
The time was coming to celebrate the Passover. Every year, the Jewish people gathered together to remember a special event that happened long ago. When God’s people were slaves in Egypt, God did great things to rescue His people. God showed the pharaoh that He is in charge, and the pharaoh let God’s people go. God had used Moses to lead His people out of Egypt and to the promised land. God did not want the people to forget that time, so every year, the Jews had a feast. Many Jews traveled to Jerusalem to get ready for the special time.
Six days before the Passover feast began, Jesus went to the town of Bethany. Bethany was near Jerusalem, and Jesus’ friend Lazarus lived there with his sisters, Mary and Martha. Lazarus was the man Jesus had raised from the dead.
Jesus went to His friend Simon’s house for a meal. Jesus was reclining at the table when Mary, Lazarus’s sister, came to Him. She had a jar of very expensive oil. The oil smelled good, like a perfume. Mary broke open the jar and poured the oil on Jesus’ head.
Jesus’ disciples were very upset! They thought Mary had wasted the expensive oil. The oil was worth 300 denarii—about a year’s pay. One of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, said, “She could have sold the oil for a lot of money, and then she could have given the money to the poor!” Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor; he said it because he loved money. In fact, he was a thief.
They told Mary that she had done the wrong thing, but Jesus spoke up. “Leave her alone,” He said. “She has done a very good thing for Me.”
Then Jesus explained, “You will always have people around you who are poor, but you will not always have Me. Mary has poured oil on My body to get it ready for burial.”
Jesus said that wherever the gospel was told in the whole world, people would also hear about Mary and what she had done.
Christ Connection: Pouring the very expensive oil on Jesus was not a waste, it was worship. By allowing Mary to anoint Him, Jesus showed that He is more valuable than anything. Jesus knew He would soon die for sinners, be buried, and rise from the dead on the third day.

SMALL GROUP OPENING Session Title: Jesus Was Anointed Bible Passage: Matthew 26:6-‐13; Mark 14:3-‐9; John 12:1-‐8 Big Picture Question: What did Mary show by pouring oil on Jesus? Jesus deserves to be honored and worshiped. Key Passage: Luke 18:31 Unit Christ Connection: Jesus’ life and teachings are examples for His followers of true holy living. Welcome time:
Arriving Activity: Smelling jars • various seasonings or extracts
• paper
• tape
• Allergy Alert
Gather several seasonings and extracts from your pantry. Use paper and tape to cover the labels so kids cannot read them. Lead kids to smell the different seasonings, challenging them to guess what each seasoning is. Allow kids to share which seasonings smell the best to them.
Say • These good-‐smelling seasonings are used for cooking. In today’s Bible story, Mary had some oil that smelled very good, but she didn’t use it for cooking. Be ready to listen and discover how Mary used her oil.
Activity page (5 minutes) • “Color by Number” activity page, 1 per kid
• pencils
Guide boys and girls to complete the activity page. The color-‐by-‐number will show a jar.
Say •You discovered a beautiful jar in the stained glass! In today’s story, someone had something very valuable in a jar. Let’s find out what it was!

Session starter (10 minutes)
Option 1: Musical chairs • “Lift My Life Up” song (optional)
Play this version of musical chairs with the chairs placed around a table but facing out. Use one less chair than the number of players. Play music and direct kids to walk around the table along with the music. When the music stops, all the kids should sit down in the chair closest to them. Take away one chair each round. Continue until one child remains.
Say •We typically sit in chairs around a table when we eat meals with friends, but in Bible times, people reclined at a low table to eat. In today’s Bible story, Jesus was reclining at a meal with His friends when someone did something very special for Him. Let’s find out what it was.
Option 2: “More or Less” game • various household items • bottle of cooking oil • labels, 1 per item • paper • pencils Gather four or five items that you know the price of, including a bottle of cooking oil. Line up the items on a table. Label each item with a fictitious price.
Provide a pencil and sheet of paper for each kid. Allow them to guess whether the actual price of the item is either higher or lower than the fictitous price. They may indicate their guess on their sheet of paper. Once each child has written down her guesses, reveal the actual price of each item. Congratulate children who guessed correctly.
Say • Excellent job guessing those prices! This bottle of oil does not cost a lot of money. In today’s Bible story, Mary had a jar of oil. The oil she had was extremely valuable. Listen to the story today to discover how much Mary’s oil was worth and what she did with this special oil.

Key passage activity (5 minutes) • Key Passage Slide or Poster
• dry erase board and markers (optional)
Make sure the key passage, Luke 18:31, is visible for each child, either as the printed poster or written on a dry erase board. Read the verse together.
Say • Jesus said Mary was preparing Him for His burial by anointing Him with oil. Jesus knew that He would die soon, just as the prophets had said. Work as a class to create motions to go along with the verse. If the class is large, break up into teams. Say the verse several times, using the motions. Continue as time allows.
Bible story review (10 minutes) • Bibles, 1 per kid
• Small Group Visual Pack
• Big Picture Question Slide or Poster
Encourage the kids to find John 12 in their Bibles. Help them as needed.
Say • Today’s Bible story is found in John 12, but it is also found in two other books of the Bible? Does anyone know which books? (Matthew; Mark) What do the Books of Matthew, Mark, and John have in common? (They are Gospels.) What is the other Gospel? (Book of Luke) Whose life on earth do the Gospels tell us about? (Jesus’)
Use the small group visual pack to show kids where today’s Bible story is on the timeline. Review the Bible story provided using the bolded text, or summarize the story in your own words.
Play “What were they thinking?” As you review the story, ask the children what each person might have been thinking at that moment in the story. (Jesus, the disciples, the other people, Mary) Encourage kids to mimic the facial expressions each person may have had.
Say • The disciples thought Mary did the wrong thing, but Jesus said she did the right thing. In fact, He said that people would hear about Mary and what she had done to honor Him wherever the gospel is told in the whole world. Jesus deserves all the honor and worship we can give Him.
Show the big picture question slide or poster.
Say • What did Mary show by pouring oil on Jesus? Jesus deserves to be honored and worshiped.

Activity choice (10 minutes)
Option 1: Heads, shoulders, knees, and toes Note: Some Bible scholars believe Mary poured the oil on Jesus’head and wiped off the overflow that landed on His feet with her hair. Since people in Jesus’time ate reclining with their feet tucked behind them, both accounts are possible.
Explain that the Books of Matthew and Mark describe Mary pouring oil on Jesus’ head. The Book of John says Mary poured oil on Jesus’ feet. Play a game that involves both kids’ heads and feet. Call out “head,” “shoulders,” “knees,” or “toes” and instruct kids to touch those parts with their hands. At first, call out instructions slowly enough for each child to easily follow. As the game progresses, call out instructions faster so kids have to work hard to keep up. Play as time allows.
Say • Mary anointed Jesus’ head and feet as an act of worship and love. What did Mary show by pouring oil on Jesus? Jesus deserves to be honored and worshiped.
Option 2: Homemade perfume • pump bottle of sweet-‐smelling liquid soap
• mini spray bottles
• water
• stickers
• labels with big picture question and answer
Tip: Encourage boys to make perfume to share with a female family member.
Provide a mini spray bottle for each child. These can be found in the travel section of your local store. Help each child fill her bottle with water, leaving a small amount of room at the top. Assist kids in adding one pump of soap (one pump per four ounces of water) to their bottles.
Make sure each spray bottle is closed and let kids have fun shaking their bottles. Allow kids to test out their perfume. You may wish to provide labels with the big picture question and answer on it. If time allows, encourage kids to decorate their bottles with stickers.
Say •Your perfume smells lovely! As you use this perfume or share it with someone you love, remember our Bible story of how Mary poured oil on Jesus. Praise Jesus for being the most valuable of all! What did Mary show by pouring oil on Jesus? Jesus deserves to be honored and worshiped.
