Introduction to Vector Tiles

Introduction | Vector Tiles

• What are Vector Tiles?

- Tiled containers of your data

- Separate style provides rendering instructions for how to draw your map

• Client device / browser is responsible for drawing the map

• Tileset components:

- Tiles

- Styles

- Sprites

- Fonts

- Index

Introduction | Vector Tiles in ArcGIS

• Leverages several Open Source projects

- Tiles use the Mapbox vector tile spec

- Based on Google protocol buffers

- Styling conforms to the Mapbox GL style spec

• More aggressive overzoom

- Indexed tiling scheme

- Support for traditional tiling also exists

• Any supported Coordinate System

Introduction | Advantages of Vector Tiles

• Display quality

- Best possible resolution for HD displays

• Dynamic labeling

- Clearer, more readable text

- On the fly labeling for heads up display

• Map Styling

- Many styles from one tileset

- Restyling

Introduction | Advantages of Vector Tiles

• Vector Tile Style Editor

- Supports ArcGIS Online basemaps and custom basemaps created with ArcGIS Pro.

- Quick Edit feature for AGOL basemaps

- Edit by color

- Click / select by layer

Design and AuthoringKnow Before You Pro

Raster Tiles:

- Imagery Basemap

- CADRG / ECRG (Scanned Maps)

- Hillshade / Shaded Relief

- 3D Terrain

- StreetMap

- Canvas Maps

- Boundaries and Places

- Transportation

Design | Use Cases

Authoring | What’s New?

• New at Pro 2.3- Pro can display styles with multiple sources

- Style Example- Improved labeling support

- multiple label classes- translation style abbreviations- forced stacking- label repetition- never-remove labels

Authoring | Make a Valid Map

• No reference scales

• Set scales based on tiling scheme

• Only layers symbolized with single symbol, unique value, graduated colors, graduated symbols, or unclassed colors are supported

• Avoid complex symbols

• No hatched or gradient fills, markers along lines or polygon outlines, or most symbol effects (except ‘Move’)

• Simple dash effects

Authoring | Make an Efficient Map

• Clean data

• Reduce density by limiting visible scale ranges

• Generalize

• Limit number of layers

• Limit duplication of content

• Be mindful of users that want to re-style your maps

• ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro 1.1- Layers will draw AT and BETWEEN

minimum and maximum scales

• ArcGIS Pro 1.2, layers don’t draw at max scale by default

- -Check “Draw up to and including the maximum scale in scale ranges” to revert to old behavior

- This is checked for old Pro projects or imported ArcMap maps

1: 1 million

1: 500,000

1: 10,000

Option checked:Both draw

Option unchecked:Layer 2 draws
