TURKEY IN 2009

On Monday ‘Round Town’was invited to the Marian Libraryat the University of Dayton to seetheir world-famous crèche col-lection. Our ‘chauffeur’ droppedus at the front door with instruc-tions to enjoy the permanentlyinstalled ‘Holy City’ crèchewhich occupies the entire rightwall of the lobby. The number of‘figures’, the ‘details’ of thebuildings, animals, and ‘stories’depicted requires a guide – andthe visitors had Ginny Whalen ,co-chair of the local Crecheorganization. “The Chapel at theapogee of the scene is a represen-tation of UD’s Chapel…oh, herecome our Rev. Johann Rotenwho’s an international authorityon crèches and the Society ofMary.

The day after ‘Round Town’s’tour of UD’s collection – theNew York Times carried a fullpage article about famous inter-national crèche collections. Anentire paragraph was devoted toan interview with Father Roten!“St. Francis of Assisi is creditedwith popularizing the crèche inthe 13th century, said Rev.Johann Roten, director of theInternational Marian ResearchInstitute at the University ofDayton in Ohio,” said the NewYork Times. “St. Francis had thebrilliant idea of creating a livingtableau with an ass and an ox in aworking stable in the Italian townof Greccio. The Capuchin-Franciscan friars served as ‘pub-licity agents’ recreating the spec-tacle across the Continent. Bythe 14th and 15th centuries

crèches were displayed inchurches and palaces inFlorence, Naples and Rome, andthey became a ‘kind of competi-tion’ among European nobility.”

(Father Roten and WalterSchaller come from the samevillage in Switzerland. Walterlives in Oakwood and is managerof Dayton Country Club.)

------------------------------------Michelle Vollmar arrived at a

client’s home in Oakwood armedwith all manner of assorted‘titles’, ‘releases’, and ‘affi-davits’ to be signed, sorted, anddiscussed. Michelle has got to bethe most attractive ‘LadyLawyer’ in Oakwood.

-----------------------------------Beth Schaeffer, and Alan

Schaeffer, and Paula Schaefferall went to ‘The Nutcracker’ lastweek. Paula reported, over thebridge table the next day – “…the production was delightful.”Sally Fisher was the big loser atthat bridge game. ‘Round Town’received a quarter from Sally –but was only owed twenty cents– so bills and IOU’s are stillunder advisement.

----------------------------------The Springfield Polo Club is

difficult to find – when it’s dark –when it’s on the left side of adivided highway and your driv-ing on the right side – and youcan see the white fencing – butyou can’t find a way to get acrossthe divided road….and. And,it’s humiliating when you’vebeen there several times before, and you’ve got a young friend

following you who’s never beenthere at all and is counting on the‘old know-it-all’!

Finally arrived! It was a greatMVH Christmas party with overforty ‘horsey types’ fromDayton, Oakwood, Kettering,Columbus, and Urbana.Carolyn Uecker and DiedreKoik ‘did’ the dinner “…alongwith some assistance from GFS,”they admitted.

-----------------------------------Sunday evening Trich

Hammer (but old, old friendsstill call her ‘Honey”) had herannual Christmas party atSycamore Country Club.

Dr. John Babcock, MFH ofthe Camargo Hunt came up fromCincy with Julie and PhilMeyer. Dr. Plettner and wifeDeb and their daughter werethere. Daughter is a sophomoreat the Univ. of Virginia – and isCoxswain of the Men’s RowingTeam! “What’s a topHunter/Jumper rider doing in aboat in Virginia – and not fox-hunting with Keswick orFarmington?” Every rider, andthey all were, - asked the samequestion. Answers were many –and promises were made.

Honey had bags of gifts foreach of her guests. There werehorse treats, and people treats, and Christmas treats – and muchlaughter.

When the party broke-up(regretfully) and headed for theircars – the car thermometers reg-istered - 3 degrees – that’s gottabe some kinda record!
