CourseObjectives

ThegoalofthiscourseistofamiliarizestudentswiththecontributionsofaselectionofwomenartistsfromtheRenaissancetothepresentthroughlecturesandreadings.Studentswillbeencouragedtoquestiontheunstatedassumptionsthathaveledtotheeliminationormarginalizationofthesewomeninconventionalarthistorytextsandsurveycourses.Studentswillalsobecomeacquaintedwiththeconceptsofpatriarchyandideology,particularlyastheyinfluencetheconstructionoffemininityanddeterminehowwomenareseenbysociety.Wewillexaminethewaysinwhichwomencontributetovisualculture,asproducersofart,asthesubjectofartandaspatronsofart.Therewillbeanemphasisontheawarenessofstereotypesandgenderrepresentationsinvisualculture,aswellasFeministartandscholarship.
