Some notes on Chapter 1 Be With Me

We are sometimes not the good friends we might wish to be:

•Blinded by our wishes, likes & dislikes•Unable to see wishes & needs of our friends•We don’t stop to think how our actions will affect others

We need habits of friendship

•Actions that strengthen our friendship•We need to become virtuous

Virtues

•Habits that help us to choose what is good,•Even without stopping to think

•Help to:•Take control of our lives•Channel our emotions to stop us from doing

something we’d regret

Virtues are developed

•Education•Prayer•Practice

Being poor in spirit

•Ok with who they are, don’t need to put on an act•People like to be around them•Admit weaknesses & strengths•Admit need for God & others•Can admire others without being jealous

Those who are meek

•Don’t try to get their own way using verbal, physical, emotional violence•Don’t make others feel stupid•Don’t push others around•Don’t need to manipulate others

Blessed are those who mourn

•When bad things are happening to others, it’s ok to be sad• If you aren’t, then you’re self-centred, selfish & not

much of a friend•Are you benefitting from their pain?

Blessed are the merciful,

•For they shall obtain mercy

•The merciful:•Give others a 2nd chance•Forgive others

Blessed are the pure in heart,

•For they shall see God

•For theirs is the kingdom of heaven

•These people are:•Okay with who they are & are not

afraid of sticking up for what is right, even if it isn’t easy.
