(ARA) - While some people see gardening as sim- ply playing in the dirt, the physical and mental benefits are well-documented. In addition to beinggood for your mind and body, sustainable garden-ing is a great way to be kind to the planet, and to
connect you to nature and the food you eat.
Gardening is Good for You
Being active in the garden increases your connec-tion to nature and gets you up off the sofa.Remember, weeds won’t wait.
• Growing a garden takes patience, follow-throughand problem-solving skills, making it a great activ-
ity for the entire family.
• Gardening helps increase endurance and physicalstrength, and improves coordination, balance and agility. Working in the garden strengthens muscles, improves blood flow and releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers.
• Activities like pushing a wheel- barrow and carrying plants help tostrengthen your heart and bones.
• Life can be stressful. Time in the
garden can be meditative and calm-ing. Research has shown that peo- ple who interact with plants recover more quickly from stress and fatigue.
• Growing plants — especiallyfruits, vegetables, herbs and other edibles — gives a sense of accom- plishment and improves nutrition.
You’re more likely to eat healthyfoods you’ve grown and prepared yourself. If you’re growing fruitsand vegetables, make sure to growa little more than you need and take the GroGood pledge to donatethe extra harvest to your local food agency. Gardening is good for your health and giving is too.
Gardening is Good for the Earth
• Test your soil to find out the pHand how much nitrogen, phospho-rus and potassium it contains, and then use a fertil-izer that contains the right nutrients for your soiltype. Always be sure to sweep any loose fertilizer off sidewalks or driveways to prevent runoff.
• Keep an eye on your plants and pay attention tothe bugs that you find. Not all bugs are pests.
Some, like lady-bugs, are actually beneficial and eat the insects that would otherwise harm your gar-den.
• Many regions of the country experience droughtsand water usage restrictions during the summer months. Use a rain barrel to collect water from theroof and gutters and you’ll have a ready supply of water. If you’re not sure when to water your plantsor how much, try Miracle Gro Moisture ControlGarden Soil. It improves existing soil to build
strong roots and is specially formulated to hold upto 25 percent more water than native soil. If your current soil condition is worn out, compacted and drained of its essential nutrients, Moisture ControlGarden Soil mixed with your existing soil can turn bad soil into great soil.
• Pull weeds by hand as soon as you see them toeliminate the competition for space and water.
For more information on gardening and healthysoil, visit the Miracle-Gro Web site, and for addi-tional information on the GroGood pledge, ediblegardening resources or how to locate a local food agency that accepts fresh produce, please visitwww.GroGood.com.

(ARA) - Impressive resume ✓
check. Perfect interview suit ✓
check. Hearing aid ✓ check, uh,how’s that again?
If you’re among the millions of baby boomers that the recessionhas driven back into the job-hunting workforce, don’t over-look one of your most important professional assets — your abili-ty to hear clearly.
About 15 percent of people aged 45 to 64 have some degree of hearing loss, according to theBetter Hearing Institute. Yourscould directly affect your abilityto be competitive in the work marketplace and hinder produc-tivity in a new job or career. With Better Hearing Monthapproaching in May, it’s a good
time to protect your competitiveedge by ensuring your hearing isas good as it can be.
Consider these important factsabout hearing loss and how todeal with it:
• When was the last time youhad a hearing test? Can’t recall?
You’re not alone. Just 13 percentof general practitioners screenadult patients for hearing loss. While children might be routine-ly tested a few times throughouttheir school career, adults tend tooverlook the possibility of hear-ing problems. Because hearingloss usually occurs gradually, over time, you may not notice a problem until it has become
advanced.
• Hearing loss is not just a senior citizens’ problem. The majorityof people with hearing loss — 65 percent — are below retire-ment age. More than 31 millionAmericans live with hearingloss, and 15 percent are aged 45to 64.
• While certain professions are at
increased risk of hearing loss, like firefighters, police officers, factory workers, farmers, con-struction workers, military per-sonnel, heavy industry workers,
musicians and entertainmentindustry professionals, hearingloss can affect anyone in any profession. Our world in generalis far noisier and louder than itwas even just 20 years ago.
• Even mild hearing loss canseriously impact your ability tocommunicate and be productive.
Hearing loss can hinder your ability to listen well during animportant job interview, or makeyou miss vital information dur-ing a meeting, phone call or tele-conference.
• Hearing loss may be irre-versible, but does not necessarilyhave to be continually degenera-tive. Getting your hearing lossdiagnosed and treated early canhelp slow or even halt itsadvance.
Only a health care professionalcan diagnose hearing loss and prescribe a treatment, which mayinclude wearing a hearing aid.Hearing aids can help — dis-creetly, subtly and effectively.
Many modern hearing aids areminimally visible and designed
to help the wearer hear moreclearly, even in situations whereolder models might not haveworked as well, such as a crowd-ed restaurant.
In addition, new technologyfrom industry leader Starkeyoffers patient-proven featuressuch as PureWave Feedback Eliminator, which eliminates theannoying whistling often associ-ated with hearing aids; AcousticScene Analyzer, which instantlyadapts the hearing aid for the
greatest comfort and clarity evenin the noisiest environments; and T2, a breakthrough technologythat allows a hearing aid wearer to use a cell or touch-tone phoneto conveniently switch modes or adjust volume without the need for additional hardware.
Employers consistently rank superior listening skills amongthe most-desirable traits a jobcandidate can offer. But the bestlistening skills in the world areuseless if you can’t clearly hear what’s being said. If you’re expe-riencing hearing loss, a hearingaid can help you compete in atough job market. (ARA) - From the barbecue sauce you slather onyour grilled chicken to the frozen dinner you grab between coming home from work and running thekids to soccer practice, sodium is simply every-where in warm-weather fare.
Even if you never add salt to your food whilecooking or eating it, you may still be getting toomuch sodium. If you have an ailment like heartdisease or high blood pressure, following a low-sodium diet is advisable, but may be a challenge toachieve.
If you’ve recently suffered a heart attack or beendiagnosed with heart failure, your doctor likelywants you to reduce your sodium intake becauseheart failure causes the body to retain sodium.Extra sodium can cause fluid to build up in your body, and extra fluid makes your heart work harder — not a good thing for a heart muscle alreadyunder strain.
A low-sodium diet means restricting your sodiumintake to just 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams (mg) a day — a little more than one teaspoon. Don’t confusesodium and salt. Sodium is a component of table
salt, making up about 40 percent of salt. Whilecertain kinds of salt, like sea salt, may have a bitless sodium there’s no such thing as a truly low-sodium salt.
While reading product labels can help you beaware of how much sodium is present in the pack-aged foods you eat — thanks to the FDA’s mandateto disclose such information - it can still be diffi-cult to achieve a low-sodium diet.
So how can you cut back on sodium? The HeartFailure Society of America, an organization aimed at improving the quality of life for people diag-nosed with heart failure and helping prevent thecondition in those at risk, offers a few helpful tips:
1. Lose the salt shaker.
If you’re still adding salt to your food when youcook or sit down at the table to eat, stop. You’ll cut
your sodium intake by as much as 30 percent by parting company with your salt shaker. Replacesalt with more healthy seasonings, like black, cayenne or lemon pepper; herbs like garlic, onion powder, dill, parsley and rosemary; lemon juiceand flavored extracts like vanilla or almond.
2. Choose low-sodium versions of favorite foods.
You don’t have to abandon all your favorite foodsin order to reduce sodium. Replace foods tradition-ally high in salt with fresh foods naturally lower insodium. For example, instead of preparing a coun-try ham, cook a fresh, lean pork roast. Substitutefreshly cooked and sliced chicken, turkey, roast beef or pork for lunch meats that usually contain a
lot of sodium. Instead of buying salty canned soups, chop up fresh veggies and cooked meats, toss them in the slow cooker and season with herbsand spices. If you must buy canned soups or veg-etables, look for labels that say “sodium-free,” “no
salt,” “low sodium,” “reduced sodium” or “unsalt-ed.”
3. Pick foods naturally low in sodium.
Generally, you can eat as much fresh food as youwant without counting the sodium content. Freshfruits and vegetables, including freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, have very little sodium.(But remember, please don’t add salt to your fruitsand vegetables.) The same is true for fresh meat, poultry and fish. If you are not eating fresh foods, choose other low-sodium foods as much as possi- ble, such as canned fruits, plain frozen vegetablesand dried beans, peas, rice and lentils.
4. Learn to read food labels.
By reading food labels, you can learn which foodsare high and low in sodium. As a rule, most processed foods, whether they are frozen, canned
or boxed, are high in sodium, but don’t rule themout entirely. Some packaged foods are available inlow- or no-salt versions.
It can be difficult to change your eating habits, buttry introducing changes slowly instead of all atonce. It may take weeks before you enjoy the tasteof low-sodium foods, but your taste buds willadjust. Be patient. Eventually you won’t even missthe salt.

ARA) - When Margaret Rossretired from a career in nursing, she had no idea that her new lifeas a volunteer would lead her right back into healthcare.
Neither did Mike Chesnut,
whose work building retail part-nerships looks a lot like his vol-unteer service for a group of Denver nonprofits that are fight-ing homelessness.
The same is true for retireeBerlin Hall. Since leaving hisaccounting executive career,Hall’s desire to help at-risk fami-
lies led him to volunteer to man-age the books for a family serv-ices agency.
As they move into roles in serv-ice and volunteering, older adults like these are discoveringthat what they know is just asimportant as how much timethey can give.
Their help couldn’t have come ata better time.
With demand for nonprofit serv-ices skyrocketing, fundraisingand revenues are way down. Some experts predict as many as100,000 nonprofit organizationscould run out of money for their
programs completely.
The recession has spurred moreinterest in volunteering amongolder adults, particularly among boomers, says Jill FriedmanFixler, a nonprofit consultantand co-author of “Boomer Volunteer Engagement.”
“This is a group with abundantskills and profound circles of influence and they believe theycan have an impact in their com-munity right now,” she says.
That was the idea for Chesnut. After leaving his job as a retailsales executive with Procter &Gamble, Chesnut, 64, spent sev-eral years as a counselor for
small business owners. When hemoved to Denver a few years
ago, he decided to focus onhelping nonprofits.
As he explored his options,Chesnut was struck by Denver’shomeless problem. Millions of dollars were being spent pulling
families out of shelters, but pro-grams that were trying to keepfamilies out of them to beginwith were underfunded.
After organizing a coalition of local nonprofits, Chesnut begana research project that eventuallyled to a successful $600,000grant.
“Coming from the corporateworld and working with largeretailers, you learn to look for common interest,” he says.“What I did was put numbers tothe problem.”
Nancy Benyamin, a volunteer coordinator for Jewish Family

(ARA) - With America’s population aging, billions of dollars are spent eachyear on senior care expenses. But with economic worries affecting many fam-ilies, cutting costs has become more important than ever. With a little creativi-ty, seniors and their families can save a substantial amount of money.
Compare PricesFamily members and caregivers can help seniors out by comparison shoppingfor goods and services online. Changing homeowner’s insurance policiesalone can save hundreds of dollars each year. Review all bills and find out if it is less expensive to bundle services like phone and cable.
Take Advantage of Existing ServicesThe fall prevention alarms advertised on television can be a great tool to helpseniors prevent serious injuries from falls and other medical emergencies, butmost of them come with a costly monthly monitoring fee. Look for a personalalarm system that can connect directly to 911 and charges no monitoring feesand has no service contracts.
Consider Home CareAccording to a 2007 MetLife survey, the average annual rate nationally for a private room in a nursing home is $77,745 and is steadily increasing each
year. The annual base rate for an indi-vidual residing in an assisted livingcommunity is $35,628. The averageannual cost of home care can be half
the cost of nursing home care.
An organization like Visiting Angels provides a cost-effective alternative toassisted living facilities and nursinghomes. Caregivers provide up to 24-hour elderly assistance in the comfortof home at affordable rates. Home caremakes it possible for seniors to remainin their homes and maintain their inde- pendence.
Reverse MortgageMany senior citizens have owned their homes for decades and can take advan-tage of a reverse mortgage — a loanthat allows a homeowner to convert a portion of their equity into cash. Unlikea traditional mortgage, repayment of areverse mortgage is not required untilthe borrower no longer uses the home as their principal residence.
Buy in Bulk Seniors often use the same products, such as personal care items or inconti-nence supplies, month after month. Purchasing such nonperishable items in bulk online or from a warehouse store can save a great deal of money. Alsoconsider signing up for automatic monthly delivery for health and personalcare products. Auto delivery ensures products will no longer run out and ship- ping is often free.
For more money-saving ideas and to find out if home care is right for you, visit www.VisitingAngels.com.

BoomersContinued from page 11Service who worked with Chesnut, says he’s anexample of the increasing importance of skilled volunteers to nonprofits that want to expand their capacity in lean times.
“Mike really enabled us to apply for this largegrant,” Benyamin says. “Without his assistance,
the new funding just wouldn’t be happening.”
For Ross, 72, the serious needs she saw as a volun-teer for SeniorsPlus in Lewiston, Maine, made her rethink the decision to step away from healthcarecompletely.
After retiring as director of nursing for a stateMedicare program, Ross signed up to help answer a referral phone line for SeniorsPlus, an agency
that helps the local aging population get servicesand support.
The organization was so impressed by her knowl-edge of medicine and healthcare benefits that theyasked her to take on a new role as a counselor, and even get additional training.
Seeing the healthcare system from the point of view of at-risk seniors has been an eye-opener,Ross says.
“In my old job, I rarely was aware whether the patient was insured or not,” she says. “Now I’m onthe other side of the fence saying, ‘Let’s get this person the coverage they need.’”
For Hall, a Hughes Aircraft retiree, volunteeringfor Family Assessment, Counseling & EducationServices (F.A.C.E.S.) was a way to shield somefamilies from the challenges his own family faced when his father, an alcoholic, left.
After reviewing Hall’s background, MaryO’Connor, the executive director at the SouthernCalifornia nonprofit, asked him to set up a newaccounting system for the cash-strapped group.
Five months later, the books are on the way to being balanced and Hall has become a strongF.A.C.E.S. supporter. He says his experience get-ting involved on a skilled basis, while frustrating at
times, has been extraordinary.
“If my mother had access to this kind of thing, Ican see how much better off we would have been,”he says with emotion. “But I had no idea that thekind of challenges this organization faces evenexisted.”
