Donate Old BrasCasa Damore and Portofino are currently hosting activities facilitated by Zonta, the international group whose mission is to “empower women through service and advocacy”. Zonta assist those in need through projects such as breast care cushions and bras for third world countries. The Zonta ladies are going to be making fascinators for Octobra. If ladies would like to donate old bras, feathers, netting, headbands and haberdashery suitable to decorate the fascinators that would be great.

THE LIFE OF HELEN KELLERAmerican educator Helen Keller overcame the adversity of being blind and deaf to become one of the 20th century’s leading humanitarians, as well as co-founder of the ACLU.
Who Was Helen Keller?Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In 1882, she was stricken by an illness that left her blind and deaf. Beginning in 1887, Keller’s teacher, Anne Sullivan, helped her make tremendous progress with her ability to communicate, and Keller went on to college, graduating in 1904. In 1920, Keller helped found the ACLU. During her lifetime, she received many honors in recognition of her accomplishments.
Early LifeHelen Keller was the first of two daughters born to Arthur H. Keller and Katherine Adams Keller. She also had two older stepbrothers. Keller’s father had proudly served as an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The family was not particularly wealthy and earned income from their cotton plantation. Later, Arthur became the editor of a weekly local newspaper, the North Alabamian.
Keller was born with her senses of sight and hearing, and started speaking when she was just 6 months old. She started walking at the age of 1.
Loss of Sight and HearingIn 1882, however, Keller contracted an illness—called “brain fever” by the family doctor—that produced a high body temperature. The true nature of the illness remains a mystery today, though some experts believe it might have been scarlet fever or meningitis. Within a few days after the fever broke, Keller’s mother noticed that her daughter didn’t show any reaction when the dinner bell was rung, or when a hand was waved in front of her face. Keller had lost both her sight and hearing. She was just 19 months old.

Educator Anne SullivanIn 1886, Keller’s mother came across a travelogue by Charles Dickens, American Notes. She read of the successful education of another deaf and blind child, Laura Bridgman, and soon dispatched Keller and her father to Baltimore, Maryland to see specialist Dr. J. Julian Chisolm. After examining Keller, Chisolm recommended that she see Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, who was working with deaf children at the time. Bell met with Keller and her parents, and suggested that they travel to the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston, Massachusetts. The school’s director suggested Helen work with one of the institutes most recent graduates, Anne Sullivan. And so began a 49-year relationship between teacher and pupil.
On March 3, 1887, Sullivan began by teaching six year-old Helen finger spelling, starting with the word “doll,” to help Keller understand the gift of a doll she had brought along. At first, Keller was curious, then defiant, refusing to cooperate with Sullivan’s instruction. When Keller did cooperate, Sullivan could tell that she wasn’t making the connection between the objects and the letters spelled out in her hand. Sullivan kept working at it, forcing Helen to go through the regimen.
In a dramatic struggle, Sullivan taught Keller the word “water”; she helped her make the connection between the object and the letters by taking Keller out to the water pump, and placing Keller’s hand under the spout. While Sullivan moved the lever to flush cool water over Keller’s hand, she spelled out the word w-a-t-e-r on Helen’s other hand. Keller understood and repeated the word in Sullivan’s hand. Keller moved to other objects with Sullivan in tow. By nightfall, she had learned 30 words.

A Formal EducationIn 1890, Keller began speech classes at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston. She would toil for 25 years to learn to speak so that others could understand her. From 1894 to 1896, she attended the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf in New York City. There, she worked on improving her communication skills and studied regular academic subjects.
Around this time, Keller became determined to attend college. In 1896, she attended the Cambridge School for Young Ladies, a preparatory school for women. As her story became known to the general public, Keller began to meet famous and influential people. One of them was the writer Mark Twain, who was very impressed with her. They became friends. Twain introduced her to his friend Henry H. Rogers, a Standard Oil executive. Rogers was so impressed with Keller’s talent, drive and determination that he agreed to pay for her to attend Radcliffe College. There, she was accompanied by Sullivan, who sat by her side to interpret lectures and texts.
By this time, Keller had mastered several methods of communication, including touch-lip reading, Braille, speech, typing and finger-spelling. With the help of Sullivan and Sullivan’s future husband, John Macy, Keller wrote her first book, The Story of My Life. It covered her transformation from childhood to 21-year-old college student. Keller graduated, cum laude, from Radcliffe in 1904, at the age of 24.
Death and LegacyKeller suffered a series of strokes in 1961, and spent the remaining years of her life at her home in Connecticut. During her lifetime, she received many honors in recognition of her accomplishments, including the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal in 1936, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964, and election to the Women’s Hall of Fame in 1965. She also received honorary doctoral degrees from Temple University and Harvard University and from the universities of Glasgow, Scotland; Berlin, Germany; Delhi, India; and Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Additionally, she was named an Honorary Fellow of the Educational Institute of Scotland.REFERENCE: HELEN KELLER. (2018). RETRIEVED FROM HTTPS://WWW.BIOGRAPHY.COM/PEOPLE/HELEN-KELLER-9361967
LIFE Achievements
Keller wrote a total of 12 published books and several articles. At age 22, Keller published her autobiography, The Story of My Life (1903), with help from Sullivan and Sullivan’s husband, John Macy. It recounts the story of her life up to age 21 and was written during her time in college.
Throughout the remainder of this issue you will come across inspirational quotes from Helen Keller.

Hello Everyone,Welcome to Esida and Esida Lodge’s August Edition of Vibes.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our new residents, families and staff who have made Esida and Lodge their new home. We look forward to getting to know you. It’s always nice to see new friendly faces and bubbly personalities. We had a jam packed July and made lasting memories with the involvement of our volunteer children. We had great feedback from many about the interaction of the children with our residents. The children had a great day, singing, dancing, making craft and playing cards and they all want to come back again soon. However, we will have to wait till next school holidays. We look forward to seeing the results of the new project the Men’s group are working on. I’ll keep it a surprise, so watch this space. It was with much devastation that we saw the Queenslanders lose the 'State of Origin', however, I kept my end of the deal and wore a “blues” jersey for the day. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever do that.I’d like to congratulate Aletia, our head chef and all the kitchen team whom underwent their annual external audit. They all worked extremely hard and their dedication reflected in a good result. Keep up the good work.I hope you are all keeping warm on these chilly mornings and evenings. As it’s still winter, just a reminder to be aware of your own health.Take care till next month,
Jenelle McPhersonFacility Manager
What a wonderful month of activities we have had at Esida and Esida Lodge in July. We have enjoyed our regular
entertainment, happy hour and activities offered and even got our residents involved in the new Knitting & Knatters group. Who would have thought Jenelle, our Facility Manager, had a hidden talent of knitting. It was great that she was able to help out with casting on stitches for our residents. We had a very special visit from the Wynnum Family Day Care children which brought so much joy and happiness to the residents as the children started a conga line making their way around the facility. The residents absolutely loved when the children got up in front and performed to them all. Even one of our residents joined in with the group of children when her favourite nursery rhyme was sung.We celebrated NAIDOC week by having the Birkdale Jarjum dancers come and perform their traditional welcome dance, and 3 other dances to the residents. The residents enjoyed the dot art painting after the performance with Annette (Café / Lifestyle Officer). The dancers came back after performing to offer some assistance to the residents. We were also treated with some extra helpers this month. We had some of our staff members bring their children into work for a day as they were on school holidays. It was great as the children wanted to do some volunteering with the lifestyle staff. The staff and residents really got behind the State of Origin at our facility dressing up and showing their team colours even though NSW won the series. It was absolutely amazing that Jenelle, our Facility Manager, wore a Blues jersey for a day. What a good sport she is! We went on a community outing to the Queensland Art Gallery and looked at 2 pieces of art with a volunteer tour guide. Residents were then able to be an artist for the day with an art therapist, completing there very own master piece. Until next month, take care and stay well, we’ll see you at your next activity.

Hello,
Although July was going to be the month for extending the popular exercise classes
to Saturday and Sunday mornings, there has been a delay in the recruitment process. Stayed posted as we will continue to progress this initiative. Recruitment has also been extended to care staff. There are a number of care staff commencing at Lorocco so I will introduce them in the next edition of Vacenti Vibes.
Case conference and catching up with residents and families in relation to ongoing care and concerns is a continual communication process. Previously there has been a lack of private areas to promote confidential discussion. This month the multipurpose room has been completed and is currently been utilized for case conferences with positive feedback from relatives and residents. This initial suggestion came from feedback at accreditation and I am happy to report the suggestion was noted and action progressed. Please continue to make suggestions and improvements to this wonderful facility.
August is an exciting month with the upcoming Ekka, a very popular event historically within Lorocco and this year seems to be becoming bigger and better with the scheduled visit from Old MacDonald Farm. Not only is this a social event but also a tactile event with the touch and visuals from real life animals for those residents who have difficulty in these areas that not all of us can experience. It also promotes connectedness to community. August is a busy month with quite a few Lorocco residents experiencing birthdays, mine included. August is represented by the sign of a Lion, interestingly Lorocco in Italian means something similar. (See the explanation below).
Keep smiling,
Cheryl Targett,Facility Manager.
Hello everyone,It’s wonderful to be back after my holiday feeling revived and refreshed and full of
inspiration. Whilst on holidays, I had the opportunity to visit a few aged care facilities in Madison, Virginia, USA. It was a great learning experience especially seeing the memory care (Dementia) units. Service is always the highest priority, especially in the South.Firstly, I would like to thank Tina for doing such a fabulous job in the Lifestyle role whilst I was on holidays. Tina introduced the ice cream fairy to Lorocco as she delivered a ray of sunshine, smiles and sparkles and left a trail of fairy dust to remember…Thanks Tina, you’re fabulous !!!This month we went to the premiere of the latest ‘Mamma Mia Here We Go Again’ movie. We rated it a 4.5 stars as we left singing and clapping. This movie had us feeling fantastic! Keeping the Mediterranean theme alive, we have granted another resident a wish by having pizza and bocce by the bayside.Lorroco welcomed two new residents recently: Mrs Dori (May) Pelgrave, and Mr Joseph Platt. It’s wonderful to see May and Joseph joining in our lifestyle program. This month, in addition to our general activities, we will celebrate International Beer Day, International Friendship Day, the EKKA carnival, and Left Handers Day.We are bringing the FARM YARD FRIENDS to Lorocco late August, and would like your support to make this possible.Lifestyle has received a wonderful donation of beautiful quality 9.25 silver and rose gold plated jewelry. A selection will be raffled to raise funds for the Farm Yard Friends activity. Items are also available for sale. Raffle tickets are available for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Don’t miss out! You can find the prizes on display at reception.Until next month, keep smiling, keep active and continue to spread kindness like confetti.

Hello Everyone! My name is Katie Fairman and I am very happy to be part of the Vacenti team. I
recently started as the Facility Manager at Marebello. Here are some fun facts about me!I never imagined myself working in aged care. Leaving school I entered into university to study Applied Sciences specialising in Bovine Production (Cows!). Upon finishing I worked for the department of Primary Industries schools and helped develop what is now standard IVF practice in cattle. After breaking my leg falling from a horse, I decided a career change was in order and I applied for a job at a local nursing home in Toowoomba as a carer. I later enrolled myself into nursing and fast realised that this was what I wanted to do. I have worked in most roles in aged care – from Carer to Care Manager to Facility Manager and more.I believe my strengths are in working at the coal face of our industry that is in our facilities, providing quality care to our elderly and standing beside our hard working staff supporting them to do the same.I look forward to meeting each and everyone of you. You are always welcome to come and speak with me or alternatively I am happy to come and see you. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Thanks all for being so welcoming and I look forward to being part of the Vacenti community here at Marebello.
Katie FairmanFacility Manager
This month we said welcome to Katie, our new Facility Manager. We also said farewell to Jenny, our Facility Manager
for the last two years. Residents and staff wish them both the very best in the next chapter of their lives.
Jeff Usher entertained us for the first time, filling in at short notice with his unique style of jazz and blues piano music and singing. Another memorable performance was given by the drummers and dancers of 'Here’s to Life', a Redland based community group. They had us waving scarfs and playing maracas and tambourines. It was really exciting.
Another new venture has been Music Therapy with Anita. She is such an enthusiastic musician who includes everyone. Music is a wonderfully effective way to communicate with people at all stages of life.
We had an outing for lunch at Redlands RSL, and six residents attended the Tournament of the Minds mid-year lunch at the Donald Simpson Centre. The group 'In Accord' gave a Christmas in July concert, and the residents of Wisteria cooked Christmas cookies. During the Friday the 13th Happy Hour, residents and families met Katie. The Winter Warmers Happy Hour offered mulled wine and gifts from Santa.
Indigiscapes have kindly donated Australian native plants for the new garden bed, which will be planted during Gardening Club. Many residents have been pleased and proud of the flowering bulbs which we planted in pots in April/May.
One more innovation this month has been finding a Resident Representative for each house (Wisteria’s still to be decided). Residents will be able to talk with their representative about things they are concerned about or ideas they have in between the monthly Residents’ Meetings. We thank them for offering their help. Do make sure you know who your representative is (see photos on the next page), and feel free to talk with them.

Hi everyone and welcome to our August update from Casa Dámore.A huge warm welcome to our residents,
families and staff that have joined our community this month. It is a pleasure to have you with us and to get to know you. This month I would like to tell you about two fantastic Volunteer groups we have visiting our residents each week. They are the Circle of Men and the Delta Therapy Dogs. The Circle of Men’s motto is ‘Creating an environment for the wellbeing of men in our community’. The Circle of Men is an international non-profit organisation that has been operating for 28 years. At Casa Dámore we are fortunate enough to host a group of men who meet with our menfolk on a Tuesday afternoon in the Bar Lounge. It’s a time of great conversation, humour and story-telling over a drink or two.Our other special visitor is Starter, the Delta Therapy Dog. Starter visits our residents on a Friday afternoon with his owners, Alex and Doris. Many of our residents have left behind special pets when they come into aged care and this is a great way to connect with a furry friend again.A special thank you to these organisation's and all of our volunteers for your involvement with Casa Dámore. You are helping us maintain our connections with our wider community.Do you have some spare time and would like to Volunteer at Casa – if so we’d love to hear from you. Another month has passed us by.We started the month celebrating 'World Chocolate Day' on the 7th of

We celebrated Denise's (one of our volunteers) 60th birthday this month. Happy birthday Denise.Casa, welcomes Anita the music therapist. Anita encourages residents to sing, reminisce and interact with instruments and music. Anita will be at Casa on Monday 6th and 20th August, please come along and join in. Hello Everyone! We are nearly through Winter with only another month to go. Unfortunately,
though the last month of winter, August is often the worst for flus and colds so I would remind all family and friends that if you are unwell please stay away from the EKKA and Portofino until you are feeling better. At the beginning of July we had two auditors on site from the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency to conduct a two day re-accreditation Audit. Over the two days they observed staff practice, documentation and processes as well as interviewing staff, management, residents and visitors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, residents and families who participated. The auditors were very complimentary of the staff and everyone else who assisted them during the audit and are recommending full compliance with the 44 outcomes. In other news I would like to remind everyone that, besides the basic Foxtel package that is on every TV at Portofino, we also have a range of Foxtel packages available through Foxtel IQ boxes from $50.00 per month to $125.00 per month. These can include all of the sports channels as well as the Italian or Greek channels. If you would like to find out more about these packages please see Tash at administration. If you are parking in the basement on B1 you will notice that the large roller gate that provides access to the Aged Care Parking and Basement 2 access is closed. This is to maintain security. If you need to access this gate please push the intercom and staff will give you access after ascertaining your right to access this area. Portia is still growing. She is now spending a bit more time with residents including attending their weekly walks out of the facility. She has even walked to Racecourse Road with the residents. I would like to request if anybody has some ideas on what markets I could attract to the Piazza on a regular basis to please share them with me. It would be of great benefit to our residents to interact with the public in this way. Until next month,Ian ByronFacility Manager
The Portofino walking group regularly enjoy jaunts around our local area, and sometimes further afield as our photos
this month show. In July, the HMAS Canberra was docked at Portside and we enjoyed having a look at ‘her’ from the dock. Our photos don’t do justice to the feeling of being dwarfed by such a huge vessel. Our ‘further afield’ walk took us to Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens. No, we didn’t walk all the way there – we travelled by taxi and did our walking through the beautiful gardens, exploring bonsai, ferns and cacti, before stopping for a picnic lunch in the Japanese Gardens, which is a truly tranquil and delightfully landscaped place to sit and soak up the beauty of nature. We all slept well that night. Our live music this month included Mr Baritone and was further enriched by sessions by Music Therapist Anita, who brought a delightfully interactive element to the hour together, stimulating our memories of song titles and themes. We celebrated a couple of ‘Big 0’ birthdays: including Jocelyn’s 90th birthday which you see pictured. Selena creates some beautifully personalised birthday cakes – Jocelyn’s featured tennis racquet's, as much of her time as a youth and adult was spent chasing tennis balls around the court. She attributes her continuing sprightliness to this lifelong involvement in “anything involving a ball.” What are we looking forward to in August? Volunteers from a professional women’s group called Zonta will join us a couple of times a month to join in pampering activities and to involve residents in some specialty creative projects. We’ll tell you more about that in our next issue. For now we ask ladies to clean out their underwear drawers and donate any unwanted bras for an Octobra activity making fascinators in preparation for Melbourne Cup Day in November. The ultimate in repurposing!PaulaLifestyle Coordinator

Hello Everyone, We have had a busy month here at Con Noi as preparations were made for the
Video Shoot that happened on the 16th and 17th of July. Many people were involved in the planning of the two day shoot. These included those planning behind the scenes, the lovely hairdressers, makeup artist and of course our wonderful residents and staff who were too happy to be involved. A film crew came and directed us as we enjoyed different activities such as meeting at the café, indoor bowls, afternoon walks, social meetings and more. They also filmed over Con Noi with their drone camera. Some resident’s were treated to having their hair and make up done. From the feedback since the day, is was conclusive that all the residents who took part really enjoyed the opportunity. I would like to sincerely thank Louisa for her support, planning, organising, catering and her professionalism. Thanks also to Tiffany for her assistance in planning and organising the day and to Robbie, Belinda and Kylie for helping out during the shoot. We must thank Louisa’s 3 grand children who played a very important part in the visitors and pool scene. It was a remarkable two days and we look forward to seeing hours of filming and 800 photos come together into a 4-5 minute video about Con Noi. On Friday 20 July we were entertained by Jan Pittman and her 12 students who came to entertain the residents and their families. It was great to see 5 and 6 year olds playing the piano, violin and the cello. Jan has teamed up with another teacher and you can see a remarkable difference from last year.It is great to have Jan and the students come to Con Noi as it is a great forum for the students to show their talents. They will return in November for another concert. We are still receiving enquiries on the remaining apartments here at Con Noi. Listen out for us on the radio and come on over for a look around. You can phone Allen on 0418 588 468 to make an appointment.

SHORT STORYParadoxical NeighborBY MUHAMMAD AASIM
I was in the middle of a sweet dream when a noise startled me. Bam! Bam! It sounded like a hammer pounding on a tough nail. Bam! Bam! BAM!
Who could be hammering at three in the morning? It must be Charlie again, making another invention.
Just as I was putting on my slippers and bathrobe, the noise changed. I sat at the edge of my bed and listened. Tick! Tick! Tick! It reminded me of my first wristwatch. Its regular tempo had always helped me fall asleep.
I started dozing off, dangerously leaning to the left, when the ticking stopped. It was now replaced by a buzz, similar to the noise coming from a beehive in midsummer, only louder. I shivered. I’m allergic to bees! Even just thinking about it or hearing a bee-like sound makes me swell.
“That’s it!” I shouted, now wide awake. “I can’t take it anymore!” I marched to the next apartment and knocked.
My neighbor immediately opened the door. His curly brown hair was sticking up every which way. He wore puffy lilac striped pants and a loose raspberry shirt.
“Hi, there, Lucy!” he chimed. “What’s up?”
I pointed at my noiseless watch. “Do you know what time it is?”
He grabbed my arm and glanced at my timepiece. “Oh, my! I didn’t realize it was that late. I’m busy working on a machine that can cure insomnia. It’s almost finished. You wanna see it?”
I should have known. His last invention was supposed to annihilate bad smells, only it was powered by rotten eggs.RESOURSE: HTTPS://STEEMIT.COM/STORY-300WORDS/@KHANAASIM/SHORT-STORY-UNDER-300-WORDS-PARADOXICAL-NEIGHBOR

HUMOUR ME
My dog used to chase people on a bike a lot. It got so bad, finally I had to take his bike away.
What do you call a bee who is having a bad hair day?
A Friz-bee!
A mushroom walks into a bar. The

don’t serve mushrooms here.” Mushroom
says, “why not? I’m a fungi!”
What do Alexander the Great and Winnie the Pooh have in common?
Same middle name.
Can a kangaroo jump higher than a house?

LOST AND FOUNDA Clothes DilemmaRemember the game played as children, where there were a lot of pictures turned upside down and each player would in turn reveal one and you would have to try an remember where you saw that matching picture to find its partner?
Lost and found clothing seems to be a similar game except missing clothes impacts our residents and everyone’s “hip pocket”. Clothes become lost and, once notified, our staff try and find them. Conversely our laundry “finds” unlabelled clothes everyday which are not reported missing and we try and find an owner. Trying to match what is reported lost and what we “find” is a daily occurrence. Lost and found clothing has been a reported issue in the last 3 resident / relative surveys and, despite changes in processes and our best efforts, remains an issue. In theory there should be zero lost and found clothing – so that is our target. What can you do to help?
New entry and/or new clothesAll of our found unclaimed items are unlabelled. Each of our sites will label your loved ones’ clothes with our approved and tested labels (to ensure they stand up to the commercial laundry process). Please give all new clothes to your home’s Administration staff or Care staff in a bag which is clearly marked with the resident’s name and room number. “Post it” notes fall off and should not be used.
It would also be very helpful if families named clothes on the label with a permanent clothing marker before handing them to Administration. Even if a family chooses to launder clothes at home, it is helpful to us if there is a name on the label.
Lost ClothesIf you suspect clothes have gone missing, please report it to Administration or Care staff as soon as possible. Vacenti has reporting processes in place to send information on lost clothes to the laundry to enable it to be found as soon as possible.
