Acting President’s Report
Dear Members,
Semester 2 has started, and students who love attending our U3A classes are rejoicing. For those of us
participating in physical activities, please do your own health check. If you’ve been away for a while,
consider doing some warm-up activities before commencing play. If you’ve been ill or, worst case
scenario, suffered an accident, please consider, are you well enough to return to play? We do need
to consider the workload we place on our wonderful tutors, who run our classes with care, kindness,
and compassion.
It’s going to be a busy time, so please put some key dates on your calendar.
This year’s I Age Well Expo will be on Wednesday, August 21st from 9am to 2.30pm in the middle of
Seniors Week, at Venue 114, Lake Kawana Community Centre. Organiser Tanya Dave promises us a
sizzling event, with great music, a huge variety of exhibits, interesting lectures, and a fashion parade.
U3A will have a stall on the day, and our groups will be providing much of the entertainment:
Richard Marman, tutor, and his group “Ukulele: Beyond Strumming” from 9.30 to 10am, Pamela
Woodrow, tutor of "Tap Dancing - Advanced", from 11 to 11.30am, and Lorraine Quinn’s "Ukulele
Beyond Beginners Plus" will play from 12 to 12.30pm.
Another date for your calendar is our very first “Master Lectures” day on Saturday October 26th at
USC, with two key lecturers delivering fascinating presentations, the first on the role of U3A’s in
maintaining our physical, mental and emotional health, the second on a new venture into
“Intergenerational Living” in Gympie. Further details in our next e-Voice…
All the excitement and keen competition amongst our teams at our annual Trivia event on Saturday
July 27th will be over when this newsletter is sent out. Who will be the champion team this year?
Your Management Committee is also currently involved in planning for a workshop next March,
investigating our organisation’s possible future directions. With over 40% of our Sunshine Coast
population aged over 50 in 2016, we are definitely a growing group, with our own needs, and yet, so
much to offer.
Oh, and we are also drafting a by-law and nomination forms to facilitate the awarding of Life
Memberships, starting at our next AGM, so think about who you would like to nominate…
We hope our President is enjoying a well-earned holiday overseas – he’s recovered sufficiently from
his own recent cycling accident, to join other veterans riding the world famous Tour de France
course.
Enjoy your learning!
Sincerely,
Glyni Cumming
Acting President

The Eyes Have It!
… A member’s feedback
The saying ‘The eyes are the window to the soul’ has more
meaning after attending Fergus Reilly’s course “The Eyes Have
It”.
Fergus takes a zoomed in photo of our eyes and then discusses
while pointing out the meaning relating to the different positions
of certain details in your eyes. I now understand that our eyes
are like a useful blue print of our life, - an outline of the journey
we need to make from A to B.
I had an inkling of what to expect of this course but was surprised
about the insight and depth with which he was able to explain
specific details. The penny has dropped, it explained a lot. There
is so much more than meets the eye in the eye …..
Fergus is a very knowledgeable man and his way of teaching
and coaching is to the point and caring. I found this fascinating
information and would highly recommend taking part in this
course.
Thank you Fergus!

New Lectures
Some Volcanoes I Have Met - by Ken Granger
I have been fascinated by volcanoes from a young age and through my career as a geographer I have had
many opportunities to visit and study these powerhouses of nature. In this lecture I will introduce some of the
science and terminology of volcanoes before talking about five active volcanoes in PNG.
They are:
Rabaul (where I lived in 1963-4 and visited many times
subsequently);
Ulawun (first visited in 1965);
Long Island (where an ancient eruption spread ash over
600 km to its west),
Karkar (where I visited in 1979 following a fatal eruption)
and
Lamington (the scene of Australia’s worst natural disaster
in 1951 and a location I visited in 1967).
These fascinating features dominate the landscapes in
which they lie and have become tourist attractions in their own right. I have selected a few of the more
interesting destinations I have visited over the past 20 years or so, at least in part to see their volcanic
landscapes.
Many of these sites have great historic interest, such as Vesuvius which buried the Italian towns of Pompeii and
Herculaneum in 79 AD, or the even more devastating eruption of the Greek island of Santorini around 1620 BC.
These have attracted tourists for hundreds of years. More active centres such as Yasur on the Vanuatu island of
Tanna attract the more adventurist tourists to witness its spectacular night-time displays (photo). For me,
however, the must-visit location for anyone with an interest in the forces of nature is Iceland, the Land of Fire
and Ice, where ice sheets cap, and massive glaciers spill off, active volcanoes.
See Ken’s lectures 6 August at Maleny, and 4 September at Caloundra.

Hello everyone. My name is Amanda and I work at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
We are currently looking for volunteers to help us run our first year nursing
simulations in September. These simulations replicate a health scenario so our
students can experience situations that are as close to real as possible. In order to
do this we need individuals to volunteer as “simulated patients”.
All simulations are fictitious so no real information is used and they are
confidential. We don’t expect people to be seasoned actors or to have a
background in health care. Anyone can do it and the feedback we’ve received from past volunteers is that
they really enjoy the experience.
We have some wonderful U3A volunteers assisting us this year but we need more help. We will be running the
simulations daily over two weeks (17th - 27th September). If you are able to help us on any of these days please
let me know. We very much appreciate your help.
If you have any questions or would like more information please don’t hesitate to contact me and the team at
VSPP@usc.edu.au or phone 5456 3712/5430 1107.
Have a great day and thank you for your consideration.
