El aulós era el más importante de los instrumentos de viento.Estaba relacionado con el culto a Dioniso y a Cibeles y rivalizaba en importancia con la lira, asociada al dios Apolo.Hasta mediados del siglo XX fue confundido con la trompa o más corriente con la flauta.
