In conceiving an airport, we must look beyond our imagination; foreseeing purposes, needs and
technicalities. It is not just a matter of symmetries, structures and beautiful lines, we want airports to be felt like home when arriving and part of the journey when departing,
making every moment memorable, providing an exciting walking process for passengers, creating an environment that enhance the experience. A good flight starts at the
airport, always.

EASY TO NAVIGATE
The implementation of today’s mobile technology, together with a well-designed space circulation, offers simplified and time-saving boarding procedures to passengers, allowing them to enjoy facilities at their own pace. Because nobody likes to feel lost in a foreign airport.

Usability and accessibility are two main factors that turn an airport into people’s favourite airport. Multiple accesses, different kinds of connections, and intuitive airport zoning guarantee a smooth user-experience for crews and all types of passengers.

When designing an airport, we imagine ourselves as passengers: reflecting on the excitement, needs, and
expectations they may feel. And we know, no one likes to wait. That‘s why we think of terminal spaces as an opportunity for
travellers to relax, shop, or taste regional products in a healthy yet vibrant environment. The barrier-free facilities enable an
easy and welcoming experience for everyone. This is what we call a full-hospitality airport.

FUN TO TRAVEL
Airports are more than a place for boarding or a gate to the nation, they are meeting points. We design waiting areas able to host various kinds of entertainment while offering a comfortable zone to relax and decompress at the same time. Keeping passengers in good spirits before boarding is a way to enrich their in-flight hours and ultimately assist cabin crew work.

GROWING PROFIT
With 120 years of experience in architecture, matured in large part in the commercial building field, Nikken Sekkei brings to the table a pool of professionals who can make the difference in the non-aeronautical profit aspects. Chubu Centrair International Airport Terminal is an example of how a concourse space can be revitalized to attract airport users.
Divided into different zones, the concessions area delivers a sense of traditional Japan on one side, and a classical European allure on the other, offering to passengers different occasions to shop and relax before boarding. While Cetrair’s Michelin-star restaurant welcomes both passengers and visitors for an exceptional fine dining experience.

Due to its geological location, Japan is one of the countries with the highest risk of natural disasters in the world. As the longest-running architectural firm in Japan, we have built up a solid background in facing all sorts of events; from cyclones and floods, to earthquakes
and droughts, our projects undergo various steps of revision to guarantee safety and security to the airport and its users.

HEALTHIER AND GREEN
We always think of buildings as a part of the environment. Therefore, understanding the habitat through its original condition is a necessary step to in presenting sustainable airports designed to reduce their impact on the surrounding areas; while remaining at their optimal operational condition under all situations. By employing the latest technology like BIM, which reduces energy consumption, we simulate scopes of improvement to deliver environmentally cleaner airports and healthier passengers spaces that co-exist with nature while remaining at their best operational condition at all times, even the most challenging ones.

CLIMATE ANALYSIS
Every country can benefit from natural resources, whether they are local materials or simply the sun and the air. Our projects are created around a smart combination of sustainable design, latest technology and advanced construction techniques that profit from local climate characteristics. The result is an airport that responds to today’s demands of being environmentally-friendly, energy-wise, and cost saving.

As the sky changes in colour, intensity and light, so do our projects. We believe in local resources and sustainability.
We match our reliable and solid Japanese construction techniques with top quality local materials; we act locally to enhance the cultural features and characteristics of the territory and present an unmistakable design that reflects and defines the identity of a city. Because
an airport is a window opened onto a country, with a stunning view.

SENSE OF PLACE
Conveying the feeling of “being there and not anywhere else” is part of our mission. We believe a successful airport springs from delivering a sense of arrival and departure to travellers. This can be achieved with an intelligent approach to “sense of the place” that intervenes on terminal architecture and other infrastructures, displays indigenous artwork and uses locally sourced materials. Perceiving an airport as unique is in itself the perfect business card to a city.

REGIONAL MATERIALS
Local production for local consumption. The aim of using top quality local material is to bring out regional identity while reducing production costs. Moreover, a tailor-made design, specific for that kind of material, will enhance the regional culture without losing in modernity or appeal.

THE DESIGN BEYOND DESIGN
In creating memorable spaces, we break through the border of architecture by seeking collaboration with worldwide famous local brands and artists. In doing so, together with our combination of architecture and structural engineering expertise, we are able to offer custom-made design solutions and a more complete and exclusive service to all our clients.

Airport companies are our airports’ first customers. We support their expectations and requests for versatility by developing a flexible infrastructure capable of adapting its layout to evolving needs. We want them to think of airports as dynamic art. We want their eyes to imagine future expansion possibilities like a well-planned journey. And then discover that, the journey, comes as smooth as a first-class flight.

SELECTED PROJECTS
Integrated with the subtropical landscaping, the airport terminal is composed of several separate buildings. The design features elements of traditional Okinawan architecture. High open spaces made possible by cross-laminated timber (CLT) technology combine with the ranked ceilings of the hipped roof to create an iconic space that heightens the sense of excitement for travellers. Furthermore, the quality of the interior environment takes into account the complex indices of thermal sensation as well as ambient environment (temperature, humidity, air flow, etc.) to achieve significant energy savings while maintaining interior environmental quality. The airport was the first in Japan to be awarded ZEB Ready certification, the government’s energy efficient building standard.

BANGABANDHU SHEIKH MUJIBUR RAHMAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTDHAKA, BANGLADESH
Named after the father of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahman, the airport is inspired by Mr Bangabandhu’s dream, Sonar Bangla/Golden Bengal and will perform as the main gate to the nation. Its entire design aims to release a strong image of Bangladesh’s rich culture and history. The airport will be developed in 5 phases to accommodate a progressively increasing number of travelers, with the final and total capacity of 80 million passengers per annum. The layout of the whole terminal development has been configured to host a multi access terminal as its central point. This solution will allow the highest accessibility rate in each different phase of the construction. During the final phase of the development the terminal building complex will operate as a mega-terminal.
