Because with this step it’s
being said to the world that
“Even though we live in the
21st century, our mentality
is still that of 1453. Even
now, in the 21st century, we
are utterly unconcerned with
preserving the cultural
heritage of humanity.
Among us, there’s no sense
of a greater cultural
inheritance beyond that
which was left to us; we have
nothing to contribute to
humanity’s cultural
treasures. We are unable to
create any new cultural
value ourselves. We seize the
cultural treasures of
humanity, we break them
and/or we destroy them.”
This is what’s being done.
Here, now, in the 21st
century, the Hagia Sophia,
one of the most significant
monuments of human
culture will again be
“conquered” and turned into
a mosque, just like in 1453.
What’s being performed here
is an act of cultural
vandalism.
Basically, the whole Hagia
Sophia affair can be
summed up with the
phrases “improper” or “a
shame”. But I think that
the audience whom I am
addressing do not possesses
the cultural delicacy to find
these words meaningful.
For their sakes, it would
better to formulate it in a
frank manner that they
could more easily
understand: the deed that is
being performed in regard
to Hagia Sophia is a clear
show of barbarism.
It is a declaration of a
“Turkish lack of culture and
destructiveness” to the
entire world. And the
pairing of President and AK
Party leader Recep Tayyip
Erdoğan with MHP leader
Devlet Bahçeli is the
political alliance through
which this lack of culture
and destructiveness has
been made manifest.
“But, why?” you may ask.
Turkey’s test of civilization One wonders: will this
partnership of Erdoğan and
Bahçeli understand the
reasons that world opinion
once held such an utterly
negative image of Turkey
and the Turks?
The famous 19th century
Russian thinker Nikolai
Danilevski once divided
human societies into
“civilization creators” and
“civilization destroyers”. He
listed the ten greatest
unique civilizations in
chronological order:
Egyptian, Chinese, Ancient
Semitic (Assyrian, Babylon,
Phonoecia, Chaldea),
Indian, Persian, Grecian,
Roman, neo-Semitic (Arab),
and Germano-Roman
(European) and had the
following to say about them:
“[B]eside these positive...
civilizations there have also
periodically appeared in the
ages of humanity certain
transitory actors like the
Huns, Mongols, and Turks,
whose candles have
suddenly flared up and gone
out, passing quickly into
history. After completing
their task of destruction, of
assisting in the deaths of
moribund civilizations and
scattering their remains,
they return to their previous
insignificance and
disappear. We may call
them the negative actors of
history.”

warehouses.
The Erdoğan-Bahçeli partnership
(and we can just as easily add
Patriotic Party (VP) head Doğu
Perinçek) represents this tradition of
destruction that has razed Anatolia,
that has not only deported and
liquidated whole peoples, but also
destroyed their cultural heritage and
attempted to erase all trace of them.
Today, Turkish vandalism, Turkish
destructiveness holds the reins of
power as the Erdoğan-Bahçeli-
Perinçek coalition.
Every Turk must therefore
understand that opposing this axis
is, at its core, the waging of a war for
civilization.
The regime’s imprisonment of the
wealthy philanthropist Osman
Kavala, who as the founder of the
Foundation for Anatolian Culture
desires to preserve the cultural
heritage and civilization of these
lands, is perhaps the most poignant
example of the struggle.
What is at stake here is nothing less
than whether Turkey will stand the
test of civilization.
In the end, civilization will triumph;
but those who oppose it may not...
Armenian Interests
Not only among the intellectuals, but
throughout the West there has been no
end of things said about the cultural
vandalism of the Turks.
“In the Balkan Peninsula, with his
every step, the Turk has trampled
underfoot the products of thousands of
years of culture.”
“Where ever the Turk sees a tree, he
cuts it down”; “The Turks have
obliterated cultures at every turn and
have not preserved those things of
which they have taken possession.
They were not a people of culture in a
sense whatsoever and have failed to
build one on the cultural foundations
that they have occupied.”
“The places where the Ottoman has
set his foot have not flourished”, the
places where the Turk has stepped
“have withered and died.” “The
Ottoman rulers have done nothing
with the places they have conquered
other than to raze and destroy, to
blight.”
Some sources even mention that the
cruelty and mercilessness of the Turks
was not only toward foreigners.
Turkish rulers “would cruelly strangle
and kill their own people if they felt
even the slightest trace of
suspicion.”[*]
If we were to repeat these utterances
today, would Erdoğan and Bahçeli be
able to reasonably object?
Just look at the state to which they
have brought the country. Almost
everyone who has attempted to speak
out against the powers that be has
been intimidated and suppressed,
they’ve been jailed and imprisoned, and
none of it has shown any sign of letting
up.
There is no one left who hasn’t been
cowed into silence, who hasn’t been
crushed by the oppressive weight of the
state. The cultural heritage that exists
on these lands, and beyond that,
nature itself, have both been dealt
their share of this destruction.
The things that have been done—that
are still being done, are the product of
nothing less than the unrestrained
exercise of power; of a ravenous
appetite for destruction.
Indeed, the Erdoğan-Bahçeli
partnership is only the most recent
manifestation of a barbarism and
tradition of destruction whose roots run
deep in these lands.
The geography of Anatolia today is one
of destruction, of ruin; it is filled with
thousands of churches and other holy
places being used as stables or

Dear Editor:
I wanted to comment on David
Boyajian’s article titled “The ADL’s
‘Task Force on Middle east Minorities’:
A Con Job?” in last week’s issue of the
Armenia Radio NJ’s weekly.
I will not dispute his opinion about the
ADL as it is not what prompted me to
write this short note, but I strongly
disagree with his description of Dr.
Tugba Tanyeri Erdemir and her
husband Dr. Aykan Erdemir, both of
whom I have known for many years
and whom I call good friends not only
of mine but of all minorities in Turkey.
His assumptions about the motivation
of the Erdemirs really is unfortunate.
These two young scholars are very
close to Turkish minorities and of
course to Armenians. Dr. Tanyeri
Erdemir is a specialist on Christian
churches in Anatolia and she has
Does he know either of them?
Has he ever spoken to either of them
at all?
Before making any accusations, he
should have had at least read a few
pieces that they have written and
then make his judgement.
As an Armenian American who was
born and raised in Turkey, who
knows very well what it means to be
a minority in Turkey, and who
appreciates the Turks like the
Erdemirs, I just could not let go of
his article.

Nurhan Becidyan
published numerous articles on the
subject. Both she and her husband
have also been very active on the
current Hagia Sophia controversy
going on right now in Turkey. I wish
you had listened to their interviews
and articles they have written on the
subject. Also, I wish Mr. Boyajian were
present during the virtual discussion
on Hagia Sophia featuring His
Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of
the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of
America moderated by Dr Aykan
Erdemir which happened on July 13,
2020.
Furthermore, what does Dr. Aykan
Erdemir’s current and past positions
matter? Does Mr. Boyajian know why
he is working at FDD?
Does he know why he was only a single
term deputy in the Turkish
parliament?

parents and grandparents.
Hagop Djernazian’s persuasive
message for all Armenians in the
diaspora is to support the
Patriarchate who are guardians of
the vast wealth of Armenian holy
places, and properties which are on
prime land. The Patriarch and the
Brotherhood have a very difficult job
of maintaining the status quo as
there are outside forces who want
desperately to overtake these places
which belong to the Armenian
people for centuries. Since he became
Patriarch, Archbishop
Nurhan Manoogian, has been
renovating all these old churches so
as to preserve them for centuries to
come. The Patriarch also wants to
convey with these renovations that
Armenian Patriarchate is staying in
the Old City.
The Patriarch is also renovating the
Mardigian Museum where very old
Armenian relics, illuminated
manuscripts etc. will be displayed.
Hagop reiterated that the Armenian
population is decreasing in
Jerusalem and the diaspora needs to
visit the Old City of Jerusalem
especially the Armenian Quarter and
support the Armenian Patriarchate
of Jerusalem.
Kudos to Hagop Djernazian - a 20-
year old young Armenian from
Jerusalem who spoke very
passionately and eloquently in both
English and Armenian about the
urgent need for Armenians from all
over the world to visit and support the
Armenian’s ‘ second homeland ‘ - the
Armenian quarter in the old city of
Jerusalem.
Hagop Djernazian is a founding
member of the newly formed
Armadner Youth Group of Jerusalem
with Patriarch Nourhan Manougian’s
blessing. Their aim is to bring to light
the difficulties and solve the problems
of the Armenian youth in Jerusalem.
Their major concerns are the young
who are emigrating; scholarships
needed for graduates of the
Tarkmanchatz Armenian School within
the convent of the Armenian Quarter;
prepare events such as the Memorial of
the 105th Anniversary of the Genocide
screened on Facebook, etc. Armadner
is trying to keep the youth in
Jerusalem but they need the help of
the Patriarch in many ways especially
to build apartments on the Armenian
land they possess for the young couples
who want to get married and who have
a lot of difficulty finding places to live
in Jerusalem.
The Caloust Gulbenkan Foundation in
conjunction with Armadner Group is
working on a project to collect from
second generations of Armenian
survivor’s stories they heard from their

The Black Lives Matter movement has
challenged US society to recognize
police violence against Blacks, as well
as systemic racism in our courts,
schools, businesses, and cultural
institutions. Four centuries of violence
and systemic oppression demand
exposure, action, and change.
A virtual public forum organized by
the Zoravik Activist Collective on July
20 will explore the Black and
Armenian experience, including a
shared history of subjugation, violence,
exclusion, and denial. But whereas,
once arrived in the US, Armenians
were eventually allowed to fully
engage as members of this society
because of their “white” race, due to a
sequence of oppressive systems
(slavery, Jim Crow, and the post-Civil
Rights neo-racist order), the race line
has consistently prevented this for
Blacks.
Recognizing that Armenians have a
singular vantage point from which to
witness anti-Black racism in our
adopted home, panelists will focus on
what the Black Lives Matter
movement can and should mean for
white Armenians and others in the US
today, and will advise on how to take
responsibility and action.
The panelists include Dr. Richard

According to the Geneva Convention
attacks on nuclear generating station
can be constituted as an act of war. This

Also according to the International

Azerbaijani Attack on Armenian Province of Tavush
Despite the pandemic the Azerbaijiani
forces started attacking on July 12
civilian and military targets in
the northeast border of Armenia. They
used heavy artillery on civilian and
military targets resulting in 4
Armenian servicemen dead - a Major,
a Captain and 2 Junior Sergeants and
a number of casualties. The Azeris
reported 11 deaths including a Major
General and a colonel.
The Armenians fought hard and
succeeded to stop the Azeris from
crossing the border. For the first time
in history made-in-Armenia
UAV‘s (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles)
were used with ‘brilliant results
‘. Armenia was able to down 13 Azeri
UAV’s - 10 combat and 3
reconnaissance. And the Armenian air
defence damaged the super expensive
Israeli made Elbit Hermes 900.
This military aggression by Azerbaijan
is not surprising as early this
month Aliyev in a bellicose rhetoric
criticized the Minsk Group for the
stalemate of the Nagorno Karabakh
negotiations and said these
were ‘pointless’ and threatened
with ‘Let us not forget the April War.
‘ True to his word, Aliyev did not
waste time and attacked Armenia with
Turkey’s blessing.
The April 2016 war was waged on the
borders of Karabakh/ Azerbaijian. The
world is questioning who started this
July attack. Actually the question
should be why did the Azeris hit
the Armenian border in Tavush? Emil
The House will vote on July 20 to
block the sale of U.S. defence articles
to Azerbaijan.
The U.S. State department in their
release ‘condemn in the strongest
terms the violence along
the Armenian/Azeri borders and call
both sides to stop the fighting and
abide by the ceasefire.’ Congressmen
Markey, Pallone, Schiff, Sherman
and Cox have spoken out strongly
about their concern on the latest
attacks. Adam Schiff said ‘a
spiraling conflict could be
devastating to the region ‘
Turkey’s Foreign Minister
announced their ‘unconditional
support to the Azeris ‘. The
Armenian Foreign Minister
‘condemned Turkey’s attempt to
provoke and destabilize the region ’.
He added ‘Turkey not only express
support for Azerbaijan but also show
unconcealed regional ambitions for
the South Caucasus.’
The President of Georgia expressed
concern and summed up the
situation clearly ‘We all fight an
invisible enemy. International
solidarity and maintenance of global
stability are of paramount
importance. ‘
On July 15 the President of Armenia,
Armen Sarkissian, awarded Major
General Status to the three officers
killed in the attack.
Sanamyan, an analyst with the USA
Institute of Armenian Studies thinks
that it might be due to a new outpost
facing the Azeri border constructed by
the Armenian forces for a tactical
advantage and which the Azeris tried
to destroy but failed. However,
Laurence Broers, a scholar of the
conflict, suggests that the Azeris might
have ‘geopolitical motivation to
probe the international border, to test
the treaty arrangement that Armenia
has with Russia.’
Actually the weak and late response of
the CSTO which stands for the
Collective Security Treaty
Organization of which Armenia is
a state member together with Russia,
Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and
Tajikistan has Yerevan wondering
whether the CSTO would come to
Armenia’s help if a more serious
conflict were to erupt. Of course the
Azeris are now gloating at the failure
of Russia supporting Armenia. Will
this provide Azeris with even
more ammunition to strike
again? Armenians are probably now
wondering ‘Is Russia really a reliable
ally? ‘
Many countries condemned the
attacks. The Mink Group of which
Russia is a member announced ‘We are
calling on both sides to exercise
restraint and honor their obligation as
part of a cease-fire.’
ANCA advised that they are working
with Congressional leaders to ask the
Azeris to stop the aggression.

Kim Kardashian took to her Twitter to
express concern over an aggravation of
the situation at the Armenia-
Azerbaijan border.
Her statement runs as follows:
"Despite an ongoing global pandemic,
Azerbaijan has violated the UN's
appeal for a global ceasefire by
unprovoked attacks against the
Republic of Armenia. Civilian
structures in Armenia have been
targeted, and Azerbaijan has now
threatened to bomb the nuclear power
plant in Armenia. In the meantime,
congressional amendments to the
National Defense Authorization Act
will be voted on next week to ensure
that the US does not enable Azerbaijan
with military aid that would be used
against Armenia and Artsakh. The
international community needs to pay
attention and intervene now with such
political and diplomatic measures to
prevent unnecessary escalation and the
loss of human life.

“The Armenian Legionnaires: Sacrifice
and Betrayal in World War I” was
translated into Armenian and
published by Mediamax with the
support of Calouste Gulbenkian
Foundation.
The book presents an important but
little-known aspect of Middle Eastern
History in the World War I era. The
Armenian legion was formed while the
Ottoman Empire’s genocide of its
Armenian population was still
ongoing, and this tale of its
deployment, actions, and dissolution
brings together the later passages of
the Great War in the Middle East, the
aftermath of genocide,
Armenian hopes for the
postwar future, resurgent
Turkish nationalism and
cynical great power
politics. Ara Tadevosyan
stated that the idea to
translate the book into

was born in October 2018,
when Mediamax was the
only media to cover the

According to the New England Journal
of Medicine volunteers who got 2 doses
vaccine had high levels of virus killing
antibodies that exceeded the average
levels seen in people who had
recovered from COVID-19.
No serious side effects were
experienced. After the 2nd dose more
than half reported mild or moderate

“The Diaspora Armenian Parliament
will not compete with any of the
existing Armenian organizations, but
will complement their efforts, giving
Armenians a greater strength to
resolve their litany of challenges,”
stated the HyeID board members.
The HyeID board members are: Harut
Sassounian of Glendale, California
(Chairman), Hagop Nazarian of
Rancho Palos Verdes, California (Vice
Chairman), Levon Thorose of
Westchester, California (Vice
Chairmen), Razmig D. Garakhanian of

The HyeID Board of Directors “call on
all Armenians worldwide to become
part of this ground breaking initiative
and fulfill the much awaited
realization of a dream of Diaspora
Armenians to have a democratically-
elected unified and self-sufficient
structure.”
Glendale, CA – Several years ago a small
group of committed Armenians
worldwide, began planning the
establishment of a democratically-elected
Diaspora Armenian Parliament (DAP).
The launch of this groundbreaking
initiative shall serve to integrate all
Diaspora Armenians in a unified
structure. Once this goal is
accomplished, the leadership of the
Diaspora Armenian Parliament, and the
Republics of Armenia and Artsakh,
elected by their respective
constituencies, can claim for the first
time that they represent all Armenians
worldwide and make collective decisions
on behalf of the entire nation.
This has been the elusive dream of all
Armenians for several decades, if not
centuries. Yet, given the dispersed
nature of the Diaspora, it has been
difficult to bring this cherished dream to
reality.
The initiating group has planned a two-
step process for the establishment of the
Diaspora Armenian Parliament:
First Step – HyeID
The HyeID non-profit organization,
already formed in California, will expand
to Armenian communities throughout
the world, including Armenians living in
the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh.
The HyeID organization has three
objectives:
a) Offer an identification HyeID card to
all Armenians around the globe,
including Armenia and Artsakh, so they
could benefit from discounts provided to
them through their purchases of
products and services, such as airlines,
hotels, restaurants, shops and many
more. The discount benefits three
parties: the HyeID cardholder, the
HyeID non-profit organization (to
finance the Diaspora Armenian
Parliament and its Pan Armenian
humanitarian projects), and the
cardholder’s affiliated or preferred
organization.
b) The information about the cardholders
will form a worldwide Armenian database
which shall enable unprecedented
collaboration among those involved in
science, technology, business, culture and
national security.
c) Diaspora HyeID cardholders are
considered registered voters for the
eventual formation of the Diaspora
Armenian Parliament. HyeID
cardholders will vote for their local
representatives to form a democratically-
elected Diaspora Armenian Parliament
which will represent all Armenians living
outside of Armenia and Artsakh.
In summary the benefits of HyeID are:
1) Registration to vote for the future
DAP;
2) Networking among cardholders;
3) Elections of DAP’s Diaspora
representatives;
4) Creation of HyelD discount network;
5) Self-funding of DAP through the
discount network;
6) Collective economic bargaining power.
Second Step – Diaspora Armenian
Parliament (DAP)
DAP is formed through local elections
held in each geographic region. The
regions are created by having an equal
number of Diaspora HyeID cardholders
eligible for voting, based on the
democratic principle of one person one
vote. All HyeID cardholders, in the
Diaspora, who are 18 or older can elect or
be elected to DAP.
The benefits of DAP are:
1) Awaken the Diaspora’s silent majority;
2) Create a synergy with all existing

Someday the world will become
better acquainted with the art of
Armenia.”
“My beloveds, one must recognize
that an Armenian in America is
indeed a strange creature. That for
us to contribute to art, we must
grasp our experience, understand
that it involves the relationship of
man to man – happy, sad,
melancholy, suffering, beautiful,
creative man – and of man to the
primordial poetry of nature. Nature
which feels in its very
unfeelingness.”
“In Ararat’s presence, one hears
thunder when there is none, feels
quaking when it does not, sees the
eagle soar when it is perched. Not for
nothing did olden Armenians call it
Castle of the Gods. Ararat is the
brain of nature ordaining its
movements. The wand of Armenia
glides over mountains and that is the
bigness residing within our marrow.
The soul of Armenia is the mountain
peak, and just as Armenian souls are
peaks of mountains, so must we
grasp them to attain our birthright.
Beauty is a serious matter.”
Passed away 72 years ago on July 21,
1948 at the age of 44
Arshile Gorky is one of the greatest
Armenian world-class artist since the
13th century. Gorky was way ahead of
our time...the best painter we ever
had. And no universal artist since
Roslin, whose ancestors also
originated in Van, ever hailed from a
more ancient culture.
Born Vosdanik Adoian on 15 April
1904 in Khorkom, his paternal home
on Lake Van in the Haiyotz Dzor (Vale
of Haik), where the Armenian nation
was founded by its eponym, and
named in honor of his mother’s
birthplace, Vosdan, also on the Lake.
Gorky’s backyard comprised
Akhtamar, Vannic ruins, and
legendary aromas. His father, Sedrak
Adoian, came from an old line of
farmer mountaineers. The family of
his mother, Shushanik der
Marderosian, for 15 centuries had
been Armenian Apostolic priests
linked to the Rushdunians and
Ardzrunians.
The murder of 1.5 million Armenian
by the Turks during the first genocide
of modern times, steeled his youth. By
the time he began high school, the
Turks had killed Gorky’s four
grandparents, six uncles and three
aunts; he had survived a massacre and
a 150-mile death march after which
his mother starved to death in his
arms; he had endured the violence of
World War I, the civil war and
Bolshevic revolution in Armenia.
He arrived in America on 1 March
1920. He had, however, come to the
new world uniquely prepared in art.
Gorky’s explorations of Van’s Urartian
ruins, of Narek, Akhtamar and Varak,
and the Van School of medieval
painting, the fact that his bones and
flesh contained the very minerals and
earth sacred Van, somehow placed him
ahead of his peers and they sensed it.
DeKooning was amazed at Gorky’s
knowledge of nature and painting, his
instinct for art’s essence, “particularly
since he was Armenian and came from
Armenia. Gorky was the general. He
was on top and he had this
extraordinary other sense, the gift of
seeing it the right way. He had all
those things before the surrealists and
the surrealists told him he had it
already. He was before the books were
written. After battling cancer, a broken
neck, a paralyzed painting arm, and a
collapsed marriage, Vosdanik Adoian
died on 21 July 1948 at the age of 44.
Quotes by Arshile Gorky:
“From our Armenian experience I will
create new forms to ignite minds and
massage hearts. Armenia’s Van,
Khorkom, Vosdan, Aikesdan, Shadakh.
From the unknown spring universal
truths. I remember the medieval
Armenian manuscript paintings with
their beautiful Armenian faces, subtle
colors, their tender lines and their
calligraphy.”
“The great art of our people lies hidden
in ruins and amid the daily life of
remote villages. Our great art has been
created by an innocent people who
were never accustomed and never had
through the sad ages any opportunity
to tell the world about their
achievements. We are a race of artists.
And art is far superior to war because
art creates while war destroys. Art
preserves beauty while war produces
only ugliness and unhappiness.
