Your assignment

•Brainstorm for 3 ideas from nature and draw them into your sketchbook.•Decide on the background pattern or border.•Decide on color scheme and use of gradation.•Draw with chalk on final paper.•Using tempera paint as the resist, paint shapes but leave chalk lines. If something is to be black, do not paint it.•Paint over everything with India ink.•Wash with water (tempera paint forms a resist and color will remain.

Resist: tempera paint Stain: India ink

Ideas•Keep your emphasis large.•Think about a border.•Use gradation of color to make it interesting.

Notice how important the lines are!!

Look how the artist used space.

Look how the artist used detail and symmetry.

Plan a background for interest.

Think color change, gradation, and contrast.

Repetition can form a rhythm that forms interest. Notice the slight changes that add further interest.

What dominate color scheme did this artist use?

What elements and principles do you notice on the next three batiks that you could use in yours?

This is a great design. Can you think of anything that would make it more interesting?

Let’s get busy!!
