TRANSCRIPT

Biotechnology and Climate Change

Introduction

This presentation aims to provide background information about the role green biotech currently plays, and can play in future, in helping to combat climate change..

About Climate Change

• Climate change threatens all elements essential for life, such as water, food, health, environment and land. This is a dramatic scenario whose most obvious symptom would be the change in weather conditions; more heat waves, storms and floods caused by melting glaciers.

Projected Impacts of Climate Change

Contributions

The three major contributions of green biotechnology to the mitigation of the impact of climate change are:

1. Greenhouse gas reduction

2. Crops adaptation

3. Protection and increase yield with less surface

1. Greenhouse Gas Reduction

Green biotechnology offers solutions to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate climate change by offering the tools to engineer crops using less energy through increase in yield

Greenhouse Effect

2. Crop Adaptation

• Green biotechnology offers solutions that could help farmers facing this challenge. This is absolutely essential for farmers in developing countries as well as in some developed countries where yields would be affected substantially. Genetic modification and hybridization is being used

3. Protection and increase yield with less surface

The major aim of agricultural biotechnology is to enhance agricultural productivity and maximize the productive capacity of our diminishing resources.

Food Demand

Deaths

There are many deaths caused due to climate change.

Conclusion

The Green Biotechnology is so useful, that virtually everyone from the farmer to the scientist can use it.  Its enabling the industries to make new or better products, often with greater speed, efficiency and flexibility.
