The Respiratory System

“bring the air we breathe into close contact with the blood so that oxygen can be absorbed and carbon dioxide

removed.”

Basically it consists of:

A pair of lungs connected to the mouth via the trachea and bronchi. The ribs and intercostal

muscles of the chest which protect the lungs, trachea and bronchi.

What is the respiratory system?

• Your respiratory system is made up of the organs in your body that help you to breathe. Remember, that Respiration = Breathing. The goal of breathing is to deliver oxygen to the body and to take away carbon dioxide.

Amazing Facts

• The capillaries in the lungs would extend 1,600 kilometres if placed end to end.

• We lose half a litre of water a day through breathing. This is the water vapour we see when we breathe onto glass.

• A person at rest usually breathes between 12 and 15 times a minute.

• The breathing rate is faster in children and women than in men.

• The lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system.

• In the lungs oxygen is taken into the body and carbon dioxide is breathed out.

• The red blood cells are responsible for picking up the oxygen in the lungs and carrying the oxygen to all the body cells that need it.

Amazing facts

• At rest, the body takes in and breathes out about 10 litres of air each minute.

• The right lung is slightly larger than the left. • Hairs in the nose help to clean the air we

breathe as well as warming it. • The highest recorded "sneeze speed" is 165

km per hour. • The surface area of the lungs is roughly the

same size as a tennis court.

Respiratory system

• The LARYNX (voice box) contains the vocal cords. It is the place where moving air being breathed in and out creates voice sounds.

• The PHARYNX (throat) collects incoming air from the nose and passes it downward to the trachea (windpipe).

• The TRACHEA is sometimes called the windpipe. The trachea filters the air we breathe and branches into the bronchi.

• The BRONCHI are two air tubes that branch off of the trachea and carry air directly into the lungs.

• The bronchi have cartilage as part of their supporting wall structure

• The bronchioles are the first airway branches that no longer contain cartilage. They are branches of the bronchi, and are smaller than one millimetre in diameter.

• When air enters passes through the bronchi it reaches tiny sacs called ALVEOLI. The sacs look like bunches of grapes at the end of the bronchial tubes.

• The alveoli are where the oxygen from the air enters your blood, and the carbon dioxide from your body goes into the air

Single alveolus

The 2 bronchi, which lead to each lung divide into many bronchioles. Bronchioles are less than 1mm in diameter and terminate in grape- like clusters of tiny sacs called alveoli.

• Gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place in the alveoli. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses through the walls of the alveoli and adjacent capillaries into the red blood cells.

• After the blood is oxygenated, it goes to the heart (between the two lungs), where it is pumped out to all of the body tissues. When you breathe out, the carbon dioxide is exhaled and expelled from the body.

• Breathing starts with a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of the lungs called the diaphragm.

• When you breathe in, the diaphragm contracts. When it contracts it flattens out and pulls downward.

Respiratory system• This movement enlarges the

space that the lungs are in. This larger space pulls air into the lungs.

• When you breathe out, the diaphragm expands reducing the amount of space for the lungs and forcing air out. The diaphragm is the main muscle used in breathing
