BodyWorks! “The Basics”

• When trying to figure out the meaning of medical terms, it’s best to break the word down into different parts to determine it’s meaning.

For example: – Root words

• Gives basic meaning to the term• Term may have at least one or more

– Combining forms• Usually a root word and vowel links word parts • The letter “o” has virtually no meaning of its own,

but it’s a great connector to form other words. • Rootword/o + suffix or rootword/o + rootword

• Adam’s Apple is a term used for the voice box or larynx. It’s in the throat.SAY: lar-inks

• During puberty, a guy’s voice starts to change and

this impacts the sounds made by the larynx.• Girls have a larynx, too. (Just not as big)!

• Drink plenty of water or you’ll get dehydrated. SAY: (dee-hi-dray-ted)

Brain Power!• There are 206 bones in the human body.• There are 600 muscles in the body.• Blood is a liquid organ.• Skin is the body’s largest organ. The liver is the

second largest.• Your heart beats about 100,000 times a day.• Every hair on your body comes equipped with a

tiny muscle that can make it stand upright.• What does the appendix do? Nothing.• How long can organs last outside the body?

– A heart lasts 3-5 hours.– A liver lasts for 10 hours.– A kidney lasts for 24 to 48 hours.

• We lose muscle and fat as we age.• Gravity takes hold! The spine

compresses. Vertebrae (the spinal column) press closer together. SAY: (ver-tuh-bray)

• Also another reason is osteoporosis. SAY: (oss-tee-oh-puh-ro-sis) • It’s a condition where the bones

become smaller and weaker.• Smoking and drinking makes the

problem worse.

• Listening to loud music over a long period of time CAN cause permanent hearing loss.

• A common hearing problem, that is often temporary, is called tinnitus which means ringing in the ears. SAY: (tih-neye-tus)

• There are over 200 different cold viruses.• The heart beats an average of 72 beats a

minute.• The entire body contains 100 trillion cells.• About 56 percent of the human body is fluid.• A meal takes between 12 to 15 hours to go

through the whole digestive system.• Do you know the signs of a heart attack?

– Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting longer than 2 minutes.

– Pain in shoulder, arm, neck or jaw.– Sweating. – Nausea and vomiting.– Shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting.

• Bacteria causes feet to stink in about 10%-15% of people. This type of bacteria is called: micrococcus sedentarius.SAY: (my-kroh-kah-kus seh-den-tair-ee-us)

• Prevent stinky feet by making sure your feet are dry before you put socks and shoes on!

• Also, don’t wear the same shoes every day!

gum. Swallowing an occasional piece of gum is harmless.

• What is a body cavity? • A body cavity is a space containing organs.

– Cranial cavity (located in head)– Thoracic cavity (located in chest)– Abdominal cavity (space below the

by spinal column)

Body Planes

• A plane is an imaginary flat surface. • Organs appear in different relationships to

each other according to the plane of the body in which they are viewed.

– Frontal/coronal: up and down plane (A anterior/P posterior)

– Sagittal/lateral: plane divides body into right and left side

– Transverse: plane dividing body into upper and lower portions (cross-section)
