Breaking Stereotypes henKaren Morris ‘99was threeyearsold,shewanted todriveacementtruck.Thatwasalittledifferentfrommostgirls,butlotsofkidsplaywithtrucks.

AsastudentatCotteyCollege,Morriswasveryinvolvedinstudentpublica-tions,workingonboththenewspaperandyearbookstaffsasaphotographer.Inhersenioryear,shewasalsothenews-

papereditor.Shetookthephotographycoursesofferedandwasrarelyseenwithouthercamera.Infact,forthosewhoknewheratCottey,photographyseemedtobethecareerpathdownwhichMorriswasheaded.Hertransferinstitutionseemedtocementthatidea.AftershegraduatedfromCottey,MorrisattendedtheRochesterInstituteofTech-nologyfrom1999-2001.

“Imajoredinphotographythefirstyearandbusinessthesecondyear,”shesaid.

AfterRIT,MorrisattendedtheUni-versityofMissouri,Columbia,from2001-2003andgraduatedcumlaudewithaBachelorofScienceinbusinessadministration,withanemphasisinman-agement.

Asanewly-mintedbusinessgraduate,MorriswentintotherestaurantbusinessworkingforamajorchaininArizona.

“Iwasarestaurantmanagerforthreeyears,”saidMorris.“Ididallpositions:barmanager,frontofhouse,officeman-ager,andkitchenmanager.”

Thelifeofarestaurantmanagerisnotaleisurelyone,however.Morrisfoundherselfworkingdays,evenings,andweekendswithverylittletimeoff.Be-forelong,Morrisfoundherselfthinkingaboutherchildhooddream:drivingatruck.However,it’snotacareerthetypi-calwomanpursues,especiallyonewithaBSinbusinessandatalentforphotogra-phy.Whytrucking?

“IchosetobecomeatruckdriverbecauseitwasalwayssomethingIhadwantedtotry,”Morrisexplained.“Iliketotravelandseenewplaces,andthisseemedlikeagoodwaytodothatandgetpaid.IalsowantedajobwhereIworkedlessthanwhenIwasattherestaurant.Ionlyworkabout70hoursaweeknow.”

Ofcourse,onedoesn’tsimplydecidetogetbehindthewheelofatruckandtakeoffacrossthecountry.Adriverhastogobacktoschooltogetlicensed.“Today,youneedtogotoschool,”saidMorris.“Mostschoolsarethreetosixweekslongandyouattendfivetosevendaysaweek.YouneedaClassACDL(commercialdriverslicense),andifyouwanttodrivetankersthereisanendorsementyouneedforthat.Samefordoubles/triples.Tohaulhazardousmaterialsyouhavetogetfingerprintedandpassabackgroundcheck.”

“TheschoolIwenttowassevendaysaweekforthreeweeks.Itwasacombina-tionofbookwork,drivingandwhattheycalled‘range’whichformewasbackingpractice,”sheadded.

Eventhoughtherearemorewomendrivingtodaythanbefore,especiallyhusband-wifeteams,it’sstillnotthatcommontofindalotofwomendriving,especiallysololikeMorris.

Accordingtoanarticleonwomenin-trucking.org,onlysevenpercentofthetruckdriversontheroadtodayare

women.Statisticsonwomentruckdriv-ersaretrickytopindown.TheU.S.Cen-susBureaudatacompiledthrough2008cites“drivers/salesworkersandtruckdrivers”totals3,388,000individuals.Thisdocumentshowsonly4.9percentofthecategoryiswomen,orapproximately166,000femaledrivers.Accordingtocareersingear.com,thereisabouta50-50splitbetweenhusband-wifeteamsandsolodrivers,leavingabout83,000solowomendriversintheUnitedStates.

DidMorriseverfeelout-of-placeasawomaninthisfield?Hadsheexperi-encedanyprejudiceagainstwomentruckdrivers?

“SometimesIstillfeeloutofplace,”Morrissaid.“ButitreallydependsmoreonwhatpartofthecountryI’min.Ihaven’texperiencedanyprejudiceagainstwomendrivers.Ifanything,it’skindoftheopposite;peopleareshockedthatIdrive.Igetcommentsoccasion-allylike,‘youdon’tlooklikethepeoplewenormallygetinhere,’or‘you’retooprettytobeatruckdriver.’”

AlthoughMorrisisneitherthefirstnortheonlyfemaledriverforheremployer,sheisbeingfeaturedinanadvertisingcampaigntoencouragemorewomen

todrive.ShewasinJoplin,Missouri,recentlyforaphotoandvideoshootforCon-wayTruckload.Theadvertisementswillappearinspecialtymagazines.

“It’ssupposedtorunthisyeartorecruitdrivers,”Morrissaidofheradvertise-ments.“Thereisanonlinevideopartaswellasprint.Therewereabouttendriverschosen.IsawoneadalreadyintheFebruaryissueofPilot’sChal-lengemagazine.Iwasn’toneofthefirstfeatured,soIdon’tknowwhenmineiscomingout.I’mprettysureitwillalsobeinthedrivingmagazines.”

Thereareotherchallengesinbeingalong-haultrucker.Forinstance,Mor-risdoesnothaveahomeaddressasshelivesoutofhertruckmostoftheyear.What’sthatlike?

“Idomissitonceinawhile,nothavingmyownkitchenandbathroomespe-cially,”sheanswered.“Hotelsdogetold,whenI’mnotontheroad.ButmostlyI’moutontheroad,soit’skindofnicenothavingtheexpenseorhavingtoworryaboutsomeonebreakinginwhenI’mtoofarawaytodoanythingaboutit.Imissthehome-cookedmeals.Istill

ettyStutzisatrue-bluebeliever inCotteyCollege.Foryears,she andherP.E.O.ChapterIB,Texas,havepromotedtheCollegeandrecruitedstudentstocampus.WhenshelearnedoftheDefining MomentCampaign,shesawitasanotherimportantwaytogetinvolvedwiththeCollege.

Stutzwassoenthusiastic,shebroughttheCampaignChairman,BarbaraAndes,toherarea’sFounders’DayluncheontospeaktotheassembledchaptersabouttheurgencyandprogressoftheCampaign.Inaferventchallengetoencourageagener-ousresponsebybothalumnaeandP.E.O.chapterstotheexpansionofthecampusandCottey’sgrowingprograms,Bettysays,“ThedollarsaresoimportanttotheexpandinggoalsoftheCollege,andwecandomuchmoreasagroup.”ItisamessagethatClassAgentsinplanningreunionsforCottey’sFoundersDayeachyearcanincorporateanduseasatooltopromoteaclassgifttotheCampaignandP.E.O.chapterscanemulateBetty’sresourcefulnessinbothspreadingthewordabouttheCampaignanddevelopingstrategiesfortherecruitmentofpotentialCotteystudents.

AnindefatigablerecruiterandsupporterforCottey,BettyStutzisrecognizedasthekeytoTexas’rankassecondonlytoMissouriinthenumberofstudentenrollmentsfromasinglestate.Betty,alife-longTexan,wasinterviewedfromherhomeinKer-rville,Texas,northwestofSanAntonio.Sherevealedthatherinterestinandknowl-edgeofCotteyCollegedevelopedoutofnecessityasaresultofherappointmenttoChairoftheTexasCotteyCollegeCommitteein2002.Subsequentlysheattendedanofficer’sseminarontheCotteycampusandwasimmediatelysmitten,realizingthatinordertobeaneffectivestateCotteyChair,sheneededtosetanexample,beginningwithherselfandherchapter.

BettyhasspearheadedCotteyrecruitmenteffortsinherchapterandareabyfaithfullyattendingcollegefairsanddiligentlyfollowingupthelistsofinterestedstudentswiththeirschoolcounselors,askingtomeetduringtheschooldaywiththosestudentswhoindicatedsomepossibleinterest.Theynow“workthelists”offiveareahighschools,tellingtheCotteystoryandencouragingvisitstothecampus,particularlyforthe“C”forYourself!Weekends.Sucheffortsresultedintheenrollmentof40Texasstudentssince2003.BettyfirstsensedtherewardsofhereffortsbyseeingthechangeinthefirstCotteygirlshehadactivelyrecruitedreturnhomeforChristmasbreakwithamarkedlychangeddemeanor–confidence,poiseandasenseofalargerworld,andsincethenconsistentlyhearingformerstudentsarticulatewhatCotteymeansintheirlives.“Itistransforming!”BettyfeelsthateveryalumnaandP.E.O.needstobeare-cruiter;highschoolcounselorscan’tdoit–theyaretooinvolvedwithdailyin-schooldemands.

HerP.E.O.chapter,IB-Texas,hasnotonlyestablishedanendowedscholarshipatCotteybutalsohasabudgetedline-itemtosupportaCotteystudent’sexpensesoncampus,suchasregistrationfee,textbooks,androomfurnishings.SeventeenofthechaptermembershavebeentotheCotteycampus.Further,theyhaveregularlyloadedtheirnewCotteystudents,withtheirbelongings,intovansinAugustandtransportedthemtoNevada,Missouri,whencircumstanceshavemadeitdifficultforthefamiliestodothis.

Inrecognitionofherconsistentfinancialsupportandpersistentrecruitmenteffortsovermanyyears,theExecutiveBoardoftheCotteyCollegeAlumnaeAssociationawardedanHonoraryAlumnaawardtoBettyattheFounders’DayAwardsLuncheoninMarch2009.Forover40yearsBettywasaprofessionaleducator,specializinginjournalismandEnglishandservingasanall-levellibrarianinpubliceducation,retir-inginFredericksburgin2008.QuotingfromtheHonoraryAlumnacitationin2009,“Herloveforherprofessionandoftheeducationalprocessremainsevidentinevery-thingshedoes.ThisloveaffairwitheducationisalsoimportanttoBetty’sloyaltyandinvolvementintheP.E.O.Sisterhood.”Shelistsherprioritiesasfamily,church,thenP.E.O.-witha“passion”forCottey.KeepingtheDefining MomentCampaigninfrontofchaptersandalumnaeiscriticaltothesuccessoftheCampaignandCottey’sfuture.SoarededicatedsupporterslikeBettyStutz!

“Ihavetodressforanytypeofweatherallthetime.OnedayIcouldneedasweatshirt,andthenextdayit’s95de-grees.Sometimesit’sthesameday.”

ProbablyoneofMorris’biggestargu-mentstoovercomeisnotthatawomanshoulddriveatruck,butthatsomeonewithacollegedegreeiswastingheredu-cation,because,afterall,youdon’tneedadegreetodriveatruck.

“AtthetimeIdidn’tknowIwasgoingtobeatruckdriver.Andtherearestillop-portunitiesformetodosomethingelse,

soIdon’tthinkofitaswasted.Manypeoplealsoendupwithcareersinsome-thingbesideswhattheygottheirdegreein,whichiskindofthesamething.Actu-allyalotofdriversnowhavedegreesinvariousthings(includingdoctors),areex-military,oraregettingtheirdegreesonlinewhiletheydrive.”

Despitethechallengesofbeingafemalelong-haultrucker,Morrisloveswhatshedoes.Sheenjoystheopportunitytoseethecountryandtovisitherfriendsandfamilyallover.Althoughshetalkedintheinterviewaboutsomedaygettingintologisticsormanagement,shehasnoim-mediateplanstoleavethehighway.

“Iplantostaydrivingfornow.Iwouldliketogetofftheroadatsomepoint,andhaveajobwhereI’mhomeatnight.IlikewhatI’mdoingnowthough.”

hefacultyandstaffatCottey spendagreatdealoftime andeffortintellingothersaboutCottey—prospectivestudents,theirparents,P.E.O.s,potentialdonors,othereducators.WhenothershearaboutourCollege,theyroutinelysay,“That’sthebest-keptsecretintheworld.”NotaphrasethatIwanttohear.ThereissoverymuchthatisspecialaboutCottey,butIhavebeenreflectingrecentlyontheglobaleducationthatCotteyhaslongprovided.

Generally,thefirstthingthatcomestomindwhenwethinkofCottey’sglobalcharacteristhegeographicdiversityofourstudents.Weconstantlyhavestu-dentsfromoverfortystatesandtwentyinternationalcountries.Irealizethatothercampusescancitesimilarstatistics,butthedifferenceisthatCotteyprovidesthisdiversityinaverysmallstudentbody.Studentstrulycometoknowotherstudentsfrommanydifferentplaces.Suitelifecontributestothis.

Wehavemadeeffortsrecentlytorecruitfacultythatreflectsthediversityofourstudentbody,andwehavebeensuccess-ful.Dr.CathrynPridal,ouracademicvicepresident,recentlywrotethatwehavefacultyfrom14differentstatesaswellasChina,France,Germany,Japan,PuertoRico,SriLankaandTurkey.Thecurriculumisinevitablyglobalinscopewhendeliveredinthisdiverseenviron-ment.

CotteyoffersatriptoaEuropeancityeachyearforallsecond-yearstudents

andselectedfacultyandstaff.ThisyearourstudentsaretravelingtoBarcelona.Eachyearforthepasteight,ourfacultyhasstudiedevaluationsofthetripandhasworkedtoenhancetheintellectualandculturalcomponentsofthetrip.First,wecreatedacoursethatprecededthetripcalledStepintotheWorld.Thisyearthecoursewasmandatoryandtaughtasinterdisciplinarybythefacultyandstaffparticipating.Thisismeta-phoricallythewayIregardthetrip:thetripistheCotteystudent’sopportunityto“stepintotheworld”withsupportanddirection.

AstheCollegegrows,weknowwecan-notcontinuetotakeeverystudenttothesamedestination.Therefore,webeganafewyearsagodevelopingalternativetripsthatcoincidewithfacultyandstu-dentinterests.OneoftheseisaJanuarytriptoGuatemalawithaserviceempha-sis.IrecentlyheardsomeofthestudentswhotraveledtoGuatemalapresenttotheboardoftrusteesthedifferencethetriphadmadeintheirunderstandingandtheirperspectives.Forsome,theexperiencecouldgenuinelybecalledlife-changing.WehavealsoofferedanalternativetriptoNewZealand,andlastspringweofferedanalternativetriptoJapan.Asitturnedout,ourstudentswerethereduringtheearthquake.Theyweresafetheentiretime,butnoonecoulddenythelearningexperienceofbeinginthatcountryduringsuchacrisis.

Nowwearedevelopingselectedbac-calaureateprograms.Theinternationalrelationsandtheinternationalbusiness

majorsarerequiredtostudyabroadforanentiresemester.Theyarestudyingatinstitutionsaroundtheworld:China,Turkey,Germany,andSouthAfrica.Thisisademandingrequirementforthefacultybecausetheseexperiencesare,totheextentpossible,personalizedforthestudent.Itisalsoafinancialburden.Wemustcreatescholarshipsthatwillhelpstudentswiththeirtravelandlivingex-penses.WeneeddonorswhounderstandtheimportanceofglobaleducationtohelpCotteycontinuetoexpanditsglobalofferings.

AswestrivetodescribeCotteyCollegetoourvariousconstituents,wetrytocapturethisstrongfocusonglobaledu-

cation.Justafewyearsago,ThomasL.Friedmanpublishedanationalbest-sellertitledThe World Is Flat anddrewthisconclusion:

Columbusreportedtohiskingandqueenthattheworldwasround,andhewentdowninhistoryasthemanwhofirstmadethisdiscovery.Ireturnedhomeandsharedmydiscov-eryonlywithmywife,andonlyinawhisper.

“Honey,”Iconfided.“Ithinktheworldisflat.”

P.E.O.doesthat.”Butintruth,fromtheduesallocationofeveryP.E.O.for theCollege,theamountprovidedfortheannualoperatingbudgetisjust7.1%.ThismisconceptionarisesamongP.E.O.sandalumnaebecausetheSisterhoodownstheproperty,thebuildingsandfurnishings.Actually,itisthegenerosityofindividualdonorsandP.E.O.chapterswhosupporttheCollegethroughscholarships,endowments,andplannedgifts.

Lois Bevins,Classof1947,hasestablishedanamedendowedscholarship,theKeis-ter-BevinsScholarshipforscholarathletes.Shesupportsherscholarshipwithregulargiftsbecauseshegivescredittotheschoolthatgaveheranexcellentstart.AftergraduatingfromCottey,shetransferredtoStanfordUniversitywheresheexcelled.ShebelievesinthevalueofaCotteyeducation.

WhatdoestheDefining Moment CampaignmeanforCotteyCollege?Itmeansgrowth!Itmeansdoorswillopenformorestudentstoreceiveanexcellenteduca-tion;morescholarshipstoaward;newbaccalaureatedegreeprograms;alibrarywiththelatestelectronicdatabase,andanewFineArtsInstructionalBuilding.TheCampaign,initsthirdyear,hassurpassedallexpectationreaching$19.1milliondollarsingiftsandpledges;wearemorethanhalfwaytothegoal!Thishasbeenajointeffortofmorethan13,000donorsandP.E.O.chapters,countlessvolunteers,5,091C3Sisters,faculty,andstaffwhohaveonethinginmind–toseeCotteyCol-legegrow!

Itdoesn’ttakelongforsomeonetorealizetheimportantroletraditionsplayintheCotteycommunity.Furthermore,itdoesn’ttakelongforastudenttobecomeim-mersedinthetraditionsthatshewillcarrywithherfortherestofherlife.While

sometraditionshaveevolvedtomeetthechangingneedsofstudentsovertime,othertraditionshavecontinuedtobeacherishedpartofCotteylife.OnesuchtraditionthathaslastedthroughouttheyearsisFounder’sDay.ThiscelebrationofthebirthofCot-tey’sfounderhasbeenacornerstoneforalumnae,whoreturneveryfiveyears(ormoreofteniftheychoose)toreunitewiththeirclassmatesandreconnectwiththeCollege.AsFounder’sDay2012rapidlyap-proaches,theexcitementfortheeventbeginstobuild.Friendsgigglewithexcitementaboutupcomingreunions;studentsbuzzwithexcitementaboutsharingstorieswithstudentsofthepast;andfacultyandstaffanxiouslyanticipatethehomecomingofover300ofourclosestpaststudentsandfriends.

Aftercollege,AinamovedtoGreatFalls.Thereshemettheoneloveofherlife,GeorgeDutro,atalocaldance.Thetwomarriedin1949.GeorgeworkedforDelMonteFoodsCorporation,andtheystartedtheirfamilywithtwosonswhileinGreatFalls.In1955,Georgetookanewpositionwith3MCompanyinOma-ha,Nebraska.GeorgeandAinawerequitepleasedtoannouncethebirthoftheirdaughter,DebraSue,in1958.TheylivedinOmahauntilGeorgereceivedapromotiontoregionalsalesmanagerfor3MCompanyin1965,whichrequiredamovetoArlingtonHeights,Illinois.TheylivedinArlingtonHeightsuntilGeorgeretiredfrom3Min1982,andtheymovedbacktoKalispell.

Aina’spassionsinlifewereentertainingherfriendsandfamily,volunteeringforcharitableorganizations,playingbridge,andmostofall,herloveofherfamily.Ainawillalwaysberememberedforherloveofherhusband,George,herloveofherchildrenandfamily,herloveoftheLord,herdynamicdrivetohelpandcareforothers,herbeauty,andheroutgoingpersonality.Sheisforeverlovedandwillbegreatlymissedbyherfamilyandfriends.

Debra Chase ‘91wasrecentlyfeaturedinastorybytheNationalMultipleScle-rosisSociety.WhenshewasdiagnosedwithMSinJuneof1997,Debra’slifechangeddrastically.Aftersomedifficulttimes,sheconnectedwiththeNationalMSSocietyandbegantrainingforthethree-day,50-mileMSWalk.Shehasbeeninvolvedinthiswalksince2003,andhasexperienceddeepgrowthandsupportthroughherinteractionwiththeNationalMSSociety.Herstoryhasbeenaninspirationtomany.

Cottey’s Oldest Alumna Dies at Age 114Shelivedinthreedifferentcenturiesandcelebratedmorebirthdaysthanmosthumanbeingswhoeverlived.Butjustliketherestofus,Delma Lowman Kollar ‘21,theoldestknownOregonian,whowasthoughtbyofficialrecord-keeperstobetheworld’sfourth-oldestperson,provedtobemortalafterall.Shediedattheageof114.Orwasit113?

“We’llneverknowforsure,”hergranddaughter,SydBerge-sonofEugene,saidTuesday.

AccordingtotheLosAngeles-basedGerontologyResearchGroup,whichverifiestheagesofsupercentenarians(110orolder)worldwidefortheGuinnessBookofWorldRecords,KollarwasbornonOctober31,1897.

Kollar’sfamilysaysshewasn’tissuedabirthcertificateuntilthe1950s.Familymem-berssayshewasbornDelmaDorothieLowmanonOctober31,1898,inLoneElm,KansasButbasedon1900and1910censusrecordsfoundonlineafewyearsagobyGerontologyResearchGroupanalystRobertYoung,thegrouplistedherbirthdayas1897.ItsWebsitestillhadherasthefourth-oldestpersonintheworldasofTues-day,behindanIowawomanandaJapaneseman,bothbornearlierin1897,andtheworld’soldestknownperson,115-year-oldBesseCooperofMonroe,Georgia.

EvenifKollarwasbornin1898,shewouldhavestillbeenamongthetop10old-estlivingpeoplebeforeshedied,accordingtotheGerontologyResearchGroup.AWikipedialistonlineoftheoldestpeopleeverhadKollarlistedastiedfor75th.TheoldestknownpersoneverwasFrance’sJeanneCalment,whowas122whenshediedin1997.

“Shelivedafantasticallylonglife,”saidBergeson,whowasholdinghergrandmoth-er’shandwhenshepassedaway.“Weareveryfortunate.Wedon’thaveanyregrets,andthat’sagreatfeeling.”

AschoolteacherinKansasandCaliforniabeforemovingtoOregonin1982withhersecondhusband,HarryKollar,DelmaKollaroutlivedbothherhusbands(herfirsthusbandandcollegesweetheart,EarlHoggatt,diedin1966)andtwoofherthreechildren.Shehadsixgrandchildren,10great-grandchildren,11great-great-grandchil-drenandonegreat-great-great-grandchild.

JeanCooper,87,ofCottageGrove,isKollar’slonesurvivingchild.Herothertwochildren,BillHoggattandEarleneDuncan,diedintheir60s,heofcongestiveheartfailure,sheofabraintumor.Kollar’sparentsbothlivedintotheir90s,andshehadtwoauntswholivedpast100,accordingtoafamilyhistorythatKollarputtogetheryearsago.

Kollar’sfamilymarveledatherlongevity.EachtimeherHalloweenbirthdaycameandwentaftersheturned100,theyfiguredthatwouldbeit.ButthentheywouldfindthemselvesbackinherroomattheCreswellassisted-livingfacility,celebratingwithyetanothercakeeachyear.

AlthoughKollar’sfacultieshaddiminishedconsiderablyinthepastcoupleofyears,herfamilythoughttheymightverywellbecelebratinganotherbirthdaycomethisfall—onethatwouldincludesome“No.1”foamfingersastheirbelovedmatriarchfoundherselfpassingthethreeladiesinfrontofhersometimethisyear,earningaWikipediapageupdatethatsaid:“World’sOldestLivingPerson.”

ButonSunday,thefacilitycalledtosaythatKollar’sbloodpressurehaddroppedsignificantly.Bergesonspenthergrandmother’sfinaltwonightswithher.SheheldherhandandsangsomeofKollar’sfavoritesongs.

“Foralongtime,Iwantedtobewithherwhenshewent,”Bergesonsaid.“Youneverknowifyou’llbeabletodothat.”

Shortlybeforeshedied,Kollar“openedhereyesreallybig,”saidBergeson,whowastherewithfouraideswhenthemomentcame.“Andshelookedreallygoodforafewmoments.Itwaskindofasweetmoment.Thenshejustpassed.”

SincedaughterCooperhasneverbeenconvincedthathermotherwasbornin1897,Kollar’sgravemarkerwillsayshewasbornin1898,Bergesonsaid.Buttheobitu-aryfilledoutatSmith-Lund-MillsFuneralHomeinCottageGrovewillsay1897,shesaid.

Connie Gloyd Logan ‘62,belovedmother,grandmother,sister,aunt,andfriend,diedpeacefullyJune5,2011,atherhomeinSantaMaria,California,surroundedbyherdaughters.Herdeathfollowedacourageousbattlewithcancerwhichshefoughtvaliantlyoverthelastseveralmonths.

AfterCottey,ConniewentontotheUni-versityofWyomingwheresheearnedherdegreein1964.WhileinWyoming,Conniewasactiveinmanyserviceorganizationsandcontributedgreatlytothebettermentofherchurchandhercommunity.

UponhermovetoSantaMariain1974,shebeganherlife’swork,raisingthreefinedaughtersandministeringgreatlytotheneedsofherclientsasadieticiananddiabeteseducatorinthecommunity.Inaddition,Connieservedfaithfullyinnu-merousorganizationsincludingherchap-terofP.E.O.,whereshewaspresidentofthegroupandasanactivememberofGloriaDeiLutheranChurch.Strongandindependent,Conniewasadmiredbyallwhoknewherforhercaringandcom-mittedfocusonmakingeachdayofherlifecount,nevercomplainingandalwaysperseveringevenindifficulttimes.Hergreatestloveandprideremainsasalegacyinherthreedaughters.Connieissurvivedbythesedaughters,son-in-law,andhercherishedgrandchildren.

Jennifer Lee Gladden ‘63passedawayDecember10,2011,aftera14-monthbattlewithcancer.Shehadbeenresiding

atHattonPrairieVillageinHatton,whereshewasclosetofamily.

ShegraduatedfromDonnybrookHighSchoolandcontinuedhereducationatCotteyandthenattheUniversityofArizona,whereshereceivedherunder-graduateandmaster’sdegrees.Aftercompletinghereducation,JenniferbeganhersuccessfulcareerattheNorthDakotaStatePenitentiary,whereshewasacounselorandevaluatorofinmates.Afterleavingthepenitentiary,shecontinuedhercareeratBismarckStateCollegeinseveralcapacitiesincludingdeanofstudentservices.AfterleavingBismarckforafewyearstopursuenewcareerchallenges,TedandJenniferreturnedtoBismarckwhenGovernorEdSchaferap-pointedJenniferasexecutivedirectorofN.D.JobService,wheresheservedforfiveyears.In2000,JenniferleftN.D.JobServicetopursueotheropportunities.Sheheldseveralstateboardappoint-mentstoincludetheN.D.ParoleBoard,N.D.WorkforceDevelopmentCouncil,N.D.RuralDevelopmentCouncil,andGovernorsTaskForceonViolentandSexOffenders.

Shewasverypassionateaboutgivingbackandvolunteeredformanylocalorganizationsandservedonseverallocalboardsandnationalcommittees.

ometimeswhenyou’reontop, there’sonlyonedirectionleftto go.LastyeartheComets finishedtheseasonwitha19-4record.AlthoughtheyweresecondtoNorthCentralMissouriCollegeinthefinalRegionXVIstandings,theywerebyfaroneofthebetterteamsinthestate,andthebestteamCotteyhadeverputonthefloorinthebrief12-yearhistoryoftheprogram.

ThereweretwoparticularchallengestheCometswouldfacethisyearastheyfollowedinthefootstepsofthepreviousyear.Thefirstchallengewas“reload-ing”apowerhouseteamthathadgreatchemistry.TheCometsreturnedonlytwoplayersfromlastseason.Granted,theyweretwotopscorers,butthatleftalotofemptyseatsonthebenchthatcoachDaveKettermanwouldneedtofill.

SantanaCruzandJordanDavidsonwerethelonefreshmenonlastyear’steam,andnoonecanunderstatetheirvalueastheyhavebeentheleadingscorersonthisyear’ssquad.Butbringinginamostlyfreshmangroupofplayershasledtoanumberofgrowingpainsaswell.AddedtothathavebeenacoupleofinjuriesthathavehurttheComets.

DavidsonmissedtheendofthefirstsemesterandthefirstcoupleofgamesinJanuarywithanillness.InearlyFebruary,forwardPetraStankovichadanemergencyappendectomythattookheroutofaction.

Probablythebiggestfactorthataf-fectedtheComets,however,wastheirstrengthofschedulefortheseason.AsCotteybecameastronger,morecom-petitiveteamoverthelasttwotothreeyears,someteamsnolongerwantedtoplaytheComets.Everyteamlookstohaveoneortwo“cupcakes”ontheirschedule,butafterlastseason,thoseteamsthatmighthavebeenlessofachallengequitschedulingCottey.

Addedtothat,thethreeSt.LouisCommunityCollegeteamsmergedintoasinglesquadthisseasonduetobudgetcuts.WhatthatmeantforCot-teywastwo-fold.First,onlytheverybestplayersfromthosethreesquadswouldbeplayingagainsttheComets,sotheremainingteamhadthebesttalentfromtheSt.Louisarea.Second,becausetheCometslostfourgamesfromtheschedule(astwoteamsnolongerexisted),theyhadtofindnewteamstoaddin.Withthelossofsome

oftheotherteamstheCometsusedtoplay,KettermanhadtoaddDivisionIteamsfromthearea.(CotteyisaDivi-sionIIteam.)

ThemajordifferencebetweenDivisionIandDivisionIIislevelofscholarshipsupporttheschoolmayoffer.DivisionIschoolsmayofferfull-rideathleticscholarships,whichDivisionIIschoolsmaynot.

KettermanandtheCometshavehadtotakeafewlumpsthisseasonastheyhavetransitionedtothetougherschedule.Currentlytheteamismiredinaseven-gamelosingstreakwitharecordof6-13

asofViewpointpresstime.TheCometshavethreeregularseasongamesremain-ingandthepostseasonRegionXVItournament.Regardlessofhowtheteamfinishes,theyhavemadestridesastheyhavelearnedtocompeteagainstbetteropponents.Plus,withonlytwoseniorsontheteam,thereshouldbeasolidcoreofplayerstoreturnnextyear.

Hanging of the GreensDecemberbroughtoneofthecampus’oldestandmostlovedtradi-tions,HangingoftheGreens.Fridayeveningfeaturedachapelservicefollowedbystudentssingingcarolsandadorningthecampusbuildingswiththeirhomemadewreaths.TheprocessionendsatPresident’sHouseforcookiesandwassailwithDrRogers.Saturdayeveningfeaturedanelegantdinnerfollowedbyasemiformaldanceforstudentsandguests.Above,seniorclasspresidentTaylorWoods(left)andfreshmanclasspresidentCheyenneWhisenhuntplacetheirclasswreathsonthefrontofMainHall.

CotteystudentsontheGuatemalatripposewithTribeo,aresidentofSanLucasToliman,whosupervisesthereforestationprojectinSanLucas.Becauseresidentsmustusewoodforheatingandcooking,manyofthehillshavebecomebarrenwhichleavesthemvulnerabletomudslidesinrainyseasons.StudentshelpedtransplantseedlingsthatwouldeventuallybereplantedinthehillsaroundSanLucas.

orfouryearsnow,Dr.Brenda Ross,professorofchemistry, hasledaservicelearningandsocialjusticetriptoGuatemala.Thisyear,shehadthelargestnumberofcurrentstudentswithninevisitingthecountryovertheholidaybreakinlateDecember-earlyJanuary.

ThetriptypicallybeginswithashortvisittoAntiguaandVolcanPacayabeforeheadingofftothesmallvillageofSanLucasTolimanwherethestudentsspendaweekworkingintheparish.Participantsspendasmuchtimelearningaboutthecommunity,thehistoryofGua-temala’scivilwar,andmeetingthelocalsastheydoinservicework.Thosetasksmayincludejobslikeremovingrocksfromaconstructionsiteatthewomen’scenter,transplantingtreeseedlingsaspartofareforestationproject,learningtopickcoffeebeans,orsimplyplayingwithchildren.

Afteraweekoflivingandworkingwithlocalresidents,theparticipantsvisitedFloresandTikaltoseetheMayanruinsandlearnabouttheancientculture.

Second-yearstudentTaylorWoodsexplainswhysheselectedtheGuatemalatrip.

I chose to go to Guatemala for variety of reasons. Initially I chose Guatemala over the Europe trip before I even knew they were going to Barcelona. I thought that I would have many more opportunities to visit somewhere as a tourist, rather than immersing myself into a culture. It was a life-changing experience from both a personal perspective and a social justice perspective and was both adventurous and educational.

I was able to further my knowledge in social inequalities that exist within a culture as well as engage in amazing activities like hiking an active volcano, or playing soccer with kids, or watch-ing the sunset from the top of a Mayan temple. Everything about this experience was more than what I had hoped for, it left me a better person, able to appreci-ate the meaning of social justice and the importance of engaging with others on a personal level--something I could bring back with me as a souvenir and adopt into my life.
