Do you know what am i?

I’m a machine!

I am a

mechanizedmoving stairway!

A moving stairway?

Yeah! I am an escalator!

Who invented me?....

Charles D.

Seeberger!!!

the name 'escalator' from the

word 'scala'

which is Latin for steps and the

word 'elevator', which had already been invented.

It can be found in common in places with a

lot of foot traffic or…

where a conventional staircase would be

very long and tiring to climb.

often installed in

pairs, with

an up escalator and a

down escalator

adjacent to each other

a single escalator may be changed to

go up

down according to the

direction of heavier traffic at different times of the day.

What’s

inside the escalator?

top and

bottom landing platforms

  truss carries all the

straight track sections connecting the upper and lower sections.

track system is built into the truss to guide the

step chain

The steps are linked by a

continuous metal chain so they

form a closed loop with each step able to bend in relation to its neighbors

railing provides a convenient

handhold for passengers while they are riding the escalator

Did you know how to use escalator?

To move from one end of an escalator to the other, a person may simply

stand on one step until one reaches the end, or one may climb or descend the escalator like conventional stairs

The great

majority of escalators in the world are

straight

there are some

spiral models too.

Escalator generally used for their

aesthetic appeal

and

saving space

In United States...

There are an estimated

35,000 escalators.

Over 245 million riders take an escalator daily

About 210 billion riders travel on elevators or escalators each year in the

North America.

The

longest outdoor escalator covers over

800 meters in distance and

elevates over

135 meters from bottom to top located at Hong Kong

Shortest escalator vertical rise is

only 32.8 inches (83 cm) at Okadaya Mores shopping mall

earliest uses of escalators was used in the building of the Egyptian Great Pyramid at Giza

over 2 million stone cubes were laid on the

tree trunks and slowly

rolled upwards on the artificial earth bridges that surrounded the build site

That

continuous use of

rolling wheels beneath the

transported weight

became

one of the basic principles behind the today’s escalators.

It’s not moving?

Are u going up or

down?

escalators also have

moving handrails which approximately

keep pace with the movement of the steps.

staircase whose steps move up

or down on tracks which keep them

horizontal.

Escalators in the London

Underground used to have

wooden steps

Escalators now have

metal steps in a

continuous loop that move on tracks.

have

glass sides which allow their workings to be

viewed

Do you

realized?

Escalator have the capacity to

move large numbers of people

can be placed in the

same physical

space as

stairs would be.

have no waiting interval, except during very heavy traffic

can be used to guide people towards main exits or special exhibits

 they may be

weather-proofed for

outdoor use

So, what does it all means?
