Brief Profile:
KP Shashidharan is an alumnus from London School of Economics, Member of Indian Audit and Accounts
Service (IAAS), columnist, academician, trainer and a prolific writer in prose and poetry.
He is currently working as Director General of Audit (Central) Mumbai, entrusted with audit of direct and
indirect tax receipts of the union government which constitutes about 40% central tax revenue. Earlier he had

held other important charges including Director General in charge of Central and State Public Sector
Enterprises, Central and State Autonomous Bodies and Societies, CAG’s Reports on state finance and projects
and schemes of the states in the Western Region, Urban Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions. He had
been Member Audit Board certifying financial reports of major public sector enterprises in different sectors of
Indian economy including those Fortune 500 Indian PSEs, listed companies including Maharatna, Navaratna
and Miniratna companies. He had also worked as Chief Auditor of Western Railway. He worked in the
Ministry of Home Affairs in different charges dealing with modernization of police, Bureau of Police
Research & Training and Director (Finance), Director (State Reorganization and State Police) and Joint
Secretary (Zonal Council) in charge of centre state inter states relation. He had also headed training as
Principal Director (Environmental Audit) pioneering training and conducting of environmental audits in CAG
office based on benchmarked international best practices.
He is a member of the SEBI Committee on Disclosures and Accounting Standards.
He has served as Member, National Advisory Committee on Accounting Standards, the apex advisory board
on Accounting Standard to Government of India and Chairman, Audit Committee of ICAI and Member of its
Governing Body and various technical committees. His international experience includes assignments with
UN organizations like UNHCR, FAO, IAEA and INTOSAI & ASOSAI.
He has been addressing academic, professional, industry, business forums on corporate governance,
environmental sustainability, Triple Bottom Line Reporting, International Financial Reporting Standards,
Internal Audit, E-governance, Information System audit and Fraud examination.
His book – BIG Business India Guru has received accolades from Union Finance Minister and other Cabinet
Ministers, Baroness- House of Lords, UK , Indo European Business Forum and many others. As a regular
freelance columnist to leading national English newspapers and journals he has been contributing articles on
technical and topical issues.
His poetic compositions in two volumes- Whispering Mind- Eternal Love Story of Yin & Yang and Painting
Symphony- Exotic Fiction in Verses have been appreciated by eminent personalities like Mr. Khuswant Singh,
Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, Shri Shri Ravi Shankar, Mr. Mukesh Ambani and Mr. Nandan Nilekani. As a creative
columnist, he has also contributed more than 100 literary, humorous and satirical pieces known as ‘Middles’
to leading news papers.
He has been a guest faculty to various premier management, academic, administrative and training institutions
like IIMs, NIFM, IMT, IMI, Fore School of Management, LBSNAA, Administrative Staff College of India,
iCISA, NAAA and professional and industrial institutions like ICAI, ICWAI, FICCI, ASSOCHAM,

As Leader of the Delegation, represented Supreme Audit Institution of India at INTOSAI Working Group
on Environmental Auditing Conference held in Brazil in 2004 and presented a paper in the Conference.
As a delegate, represented Supreme Audit Institution of India in 2007 as Member of the Delegation on
audit of Direct Taxes in China and presented a paper on tax reforms and compliance issues.
Trained more than 50 Audit Professionals in Bhutan in 2007 as a Subject Matter Expert.
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) trained International Trainers in Audit of Privatization in New Delhi
and Cambodia in 2009.
Conducted Value for Money audit of UNHCR Headquarters at Teheran, Iran in 1999.

Being a senior IA&AS officer, is currently working as Director General of Audit in the office of the
CAG of India.
As Director General of Audit (Central), Mumbai, is currently heading the office which conducts audit
of the offices of Income Tax Department, Central Excise & Service Tax Department and Customs
Department located in Maharashtra which contributes to 40 per cent of Direct and Indirect tax
collections of the Government of India.
As Director General in the CAG’s headquarter office in Delhi he served 7 years looking after
performance audits, compliance audits, information system audits, environmental audits and financial
audits of of Public Enterprises, Autonomous Bodies, reports on state finances, budgeting, projects,
programmed and schemes of states in States in the Western Region.
Also served as Deputy Secretary, Director and Joint Secretary (Zonal Council) for 5 years in the
Ministry of Home Affairs looking after issues relating to Central police organizations, law and order,
state police, modernization of police, modernization of prison administration.
International affiliation includes assignments with UN Organizations like UNHCR, FAO, IAEA and

Instrumental in transforming CAG’s training institution in Mumbai as a Centre of Excellence in
Environmental Auditing: Obtained ISO 9001:2000 certification for the Institute, applied the concept of
Knowledge Management System in the Institute, networked with the leading national environmental
institutions like NEERI, TERI etc. Designed and developed Structured Training Module (STM) on
Environmental Auditing, Performance Auditing, VFM audit, audit of Direct Taxes, audit of Port Trust
and Certification of Accounts and disseminated knowledge resources for capacity building and more
effective audit.
Pioneered Environmental Auditing by attempting a comprehensive audit of Ports like Jawaharlal Nehru
Port Trust and Mumbai Port Trust. Also supervised Environmental Audit in PSUs of different sectors like
Iron & Steel, Oil & Natural Gas and Coal & Mining .
Instrumental in systematizing the empanelment of Chartered Accountants for the audit of Public Sector
Units by creating a transparent and robust online registration system.
Conducted training programmes all over India for transfer from cash based accounting system to accrual
based accounting system in central and state Autonomous Bodies in collaboration with ICAI.
Consequently, many of the Autonomous Bodies have moved from cash based system to accrual based
system.

Joined as Director General of Audit (Central), Mumbai on 2nd December, 2013 entrusted with
statutory audit of 40% of Direct and Indirect Tax revenue of the central government comprising Income tax,
Wealth tax, Central Excise, Customs, Service Tax assessment offices spread across the state of Maharashtra
and Goa. Also responsible for the expenditure audit and certification of Autonomous Bodies and centrally

Functioned as Head of the Department, managed and administered the office having staff strength of more
than 900 personnel; audit of direct and indirect tax revenue from the state of Maharashtra, which forms
about one-fourth of the total at central tax revenue of the country, expenditure audit of central civil and
public works department and audit of Autonomous Bodies like Ports and IITs.
2003 – 2005 as Principal Director, Regional Training Institute, Mumbai
Functioned as Head of the Department, managed and administered Regional Training Institute, Mumbai.
Besides, functioning as the Principal and Core Faculty, converted the institute into a Centre of Excellence
on Environment Audit. Organized nation-wide workshops on Environment Audit by networking and in
