Program  Highlights  During  this  field-­‐work  based  programs  students  will:  

• Visit  Siem  Reap,  one  of  Cambodia’s  principal  cities,  located  on  the  Ton  Le  Sap  Lake.  

• Explore  the  ruins  of  the  city  of  Angkor  and  the  famous  temple  of  Angkor  Wat.  

• Explore  Cambodia’s  bustling  capital  city,  Phnom  Penh.      

• Be  briefed  on  the  Cambodian  Genocide  by  local  experts,  with  visits  to  the  Tuol  Sleng  Museum  and  the  ‘Killing  Fields.’  

• Experience  life  on  rice  farm  in  a  rural  area  in  southern  Cambodia.  

• Visit  the  port  and  tourist  city  of  Sihanoukville.  

• Journey  by  air  from  Phnom  Penh  to  Siem  Reap.

Cambodia  

 

Dr.  Rallis  discusses  Cambodian  history  in  the  shadow  of  the  12th  Century  ‘Terrace  of  the  Elephants.’    

Life  on  the  Ton  Le  Sap  River,  where  the  water-­‐dwelling  culture  dates  back  hundreds  of  years  and  houses  on  stilts  are  the  norm.    

Street  scene  on  a  road  Siem  Riep.  Travel  by  “tuk-­‐tuk”  is  common  throughout  Cambodia.    

About  the  Program  • This  23  day  trip  to  Cambodia  takes  

place  during  Winter  Break,  from  December  17,  2012  to  January  9,  2013.  

• The  Program  will  be  led  by  Dr.  Donald  Rallis,  Associate  Professor  in  the  Department  of  Geography  at  UMW.  

• Open  to  all  students,  regardless  of  year  or  field  of  study,  and  to  non-­‐UMW  students.  

 

Requirements  • Register  for  GEOG  360F  (Geographic  

Study  Abroad)  for  Spring  2013.  Most  participants  will  not  have  to  pay  additional  tuition  for  the  course.  

• Minimum  2.0  GPA  • Students  can  also  complete  the  

following  UMW  general  education  requirements:  

o Experiential  learning  OR  o Global  inquiry    

 

Coursework  • 3  Course  Credits  for  GEOG  360F  (Geographic  

Study  Abroad).    There  are  no  pre-­‐requisites  for  this  course  other  than  permission  from  the  instructor.  

• Required  readings  prior  to  departure.  • Participate  in  discussions  and  organized  

tours  while  on  site.  • Contribute  to  the  group  blog  while  in  

Cambodia.  • Publish  a  creative  project  online  (e.g.  video,  

in-­‐depth  blog  article,  or  annotated  online  photograph  collection)  about  a  Cambodia-­‐related  topic  that  interests  you.

Fee  of  $1,989  Includes  • Insurance  and  UMW  Study  Abroad  fee.  • Airport  transfers  and  transportation  in
