…Oh Lord, it’s hot, and that’s not a
prayer, but an observation to the world at large and the one who created heat. And still, we have to eat.
This summer’s a tough one, but the shrimp have helped me through. When I’ve given up on leathery tomatoes and zinnias so thirsty they won’t raise their heads by noon, I know what I want for dinner. I want something cold, a little crisp and briny, something reminiscent of water.
Memory can be such a sweet lane. I remember a summer in the California Bay Area, when one morning, very early, my father and I drove over the Santa Cruz Mountains and down Highway 1 to the Monterey Bay. There, in the dim light of false morning, we boarded a deep sea fi shing boat because we both loved to fi sh. I remember fog and a feisty gray sea, full of foam and strange fi sh, pulled bloated from the depths by the lines that didn’t tangle under the boat.
I remember a guy with a fi sh hook in the palm of his hand. His early morning beer staved off the cursing. I remember my fi rst bout of sea sickness, someone saying—sloppy weather—and pointing to the stability of the Monterey coastline.
Back on land, my father and I headed up the coast for Santa Cruz. On the pier, we brought a big bundle of boiled shrimp wrapped in white paper, a loaf of sourdough, butter and some cold white wine. The boards of that wharf shuddered against the buffeting waves. The gulls pierced the summer that smelled of fi sh and salt and shrimp.
We sat on the hood of the car and ate those shrimp and listened to the waves careen against the coves with the fury that I called drownin’ water. My stomach settled, and the air was laced with coolness.
Fast forward to the Texas Gulf and a merciless sun that pounds the aroma of fresh shrimp to a pungent veneer. Fast forward to sunburn and sandburn and languid waters. Such a beautiful slowness in the air as we ice down the shrimp and beat down the heat with fi ery spices. Love lies in the maze of contradiction.
So I say yes to shrimp tonight. I buy it from the friend who drives it up from the coast. I serve it cold, laced with capers, mayonnaise and celery, red onion and lemon. I say yes to spicy boil, to horserad-ish and catsup. I eat it with mangoes and avocado. I eat it to live through the summer.
Yes. Shrimp is a great idea.
