The One Young WorldSummit is a uniqueconcept in confer-ences in that it gathersthe brightest youngleaders from aroundthe world and em-powers them to makelasting connectionsand to develop solu-tions to some of theworld’s most pressing issues. One Young Worlddelegates are 18–30-year-olds who havedemonstrated leadership abilities and a com-mitment to effecting positive change. Manyhave already had an impact in their home coun-tries on a range of issues, such as the role ofbusiness in society, transparency in businessand government, the impact of climate change,global health and hunger relief.

The annual One Young World Summit wasfounded in 2009 by David Jones, Kate Robert-

son and the Founding Corporate Partner Havas.It is the pre-eminent global forum at whichyoung talent from global and national compa-nies, non-governmental organisations, univer-sities and other forward-thinking organisationsare joined by world leaders, who act as OneYoung World Counsellors. Dubbed ‘Davos forthe Youth’ by some, Summit delegates debate,formulate and share innovative solutions forpressing issues currently facing the world.After each Summit the delegates, who are thenknown as One Young World Ambassadors,work on their own initiatives or bring the powerof the One Young World network to initiativesalready in existence. Of those in employment,many return to their companies and set aboutcreating change from within their corporateenvironment.

Team IrelandThe fifth Summit took place in Dublin on 15–18 October 2014, attracting 1300 young leadersfrom 190 countries. Global leaders, includingKofi Annan, Sir Bob Geldof, Antony Jenkinsand Mary Robinson, spoke alongside the dele-gates to address key issues ranging from peaceand conflict resolution to global business, andfrom education to human rights and sustainabledevelopment. Ireland was selected as the venuefor this high profile and influential conferencethanks to the hard work of Bob Coggins, ClaraKelleher and Valerie McGrane, under the guid-ance of Nicola McGrane, Managing Directorof Conference Partners, who brought more than20 years’ experience of winning conferencesfor Ireland to the process. The theme of the bid– ‘One Thousand Welcomes’ – was a play onthe traditional Irish ‘one hundred thousand

welcomes’, or Céad Míle Fáilte, adapted tocomplement the One Young World brand. Significantly, the bid was supported by thePresident of Ireland, the Minister for Transport,Tourism and Sport, the Lord Mayor of Dublin,the Gaelic Athletic Association, Fáilte Irelandand numerous other key organisations in a concerted and ultimately successful ‘Team Ireland’ approach.

David Jones and Kate Robertson highlightedwhy Dublin was chosen to host the 2014 OneYoung World Summit. “Whether it was fromthe North or whether it’s from the great reces-sion, its story is one of a triumph, it’s one of society, it’s one of communal values, it’s one ofpeople... pulling through,” they explained.Other aspects also contributed to Dublin’s win,such as the strength of the bid by the young ambassadors and the city’s position as ‘the capital of new technology for the whole of Europe’. Conference Partners was selected asthe local PCO in December 2013 and worked

closely with the Dublin Advi-sory Committee, the OneYoung World office in Londonand public relations companiesto ensure that the conferenceexceeded the bid promises andwent off seamlessly and suc-cessfully.

Peace and Conflict ResolutionThe 3-day programme con-sisted of special and plenarysessions based on the key top-ics of: Education; HumanRights; Leadership & Govern-ment; Global Business; Sus-

tainable Development; and Peace & Conflict.Speakers included Kofi Annan, four formerLatin American Presidents, Dame EllenMacArthur, Mark Pollock, Caroline Casey, AliHewson, Professor Muhammad Yunis, RonanDunne and Lord Michael Hastings, to name but a few. The One Young World Peace andConflict Resolution Project highlighted Ire-land’s unique history of conflict resolution andexplored lessons learnt from the Northern Ireland peace process. With half the One YoungWorld community living in a country affectedby conflict, a series of sessions led by Dr Martin MacAleese, Sean Murray, a Sinn Feinmember and former IRA prisoner, and JackieMcDonald, Northern Ireland activist and former UDA prisoner, offered delegates frommore than 14 conflict-affected countries suchas Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Ukraine, Kashmir,South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan andPakistan a platform to share stories and developideas for strengthening efforts towards conflictresolution in their own countries.

Seeing the sights in DublinAn innovative aspect of the Summit pro-gramme was the external breakouts that tookplace across 26 separate sites in Dublin on theFriday afternoon. Delegates pre-registered fortheir breakout of interest and were then trans-ported by bus or on foot in groups of 30–35people to an off-site location for their chosensession. Each breakout was hosted and organ-ised by a com-pany or organisation, and thisunusually large-scale, offsite activity was co-ordinated by Conference Partners, with eachhosting company/organisation providing lunch,the venue and an exciting interactive pro-

gramme to delegates. The range of hosts in-cluded Google, Facebook, KPMG, Diageo,Kanchi, ESB International and Dublin CityCouncil, further reinforcing the ‘Team Ireland’aspect of the conference as well as the rele-vance of the Summit to today’s business, publicsector and charitable communities. As part ofthe Summit’s promise to give delegates a realintroduction to the Irish way of life, and to liveup to its legendary reputation for hospitality,Dublin welcomed One Young World delegateswith a ‘One Thousand Welcomes’ tour. Smallgroups of delegates were introduced to a youngDubliner, who then took them on a ‘local’stour’ of Dublin, enabling them to see the realsights and sounds of the city – not just the oneson the tourist maps, but the authentic fabric ofIrish life. Guides included staff or student volunteers from the organisations hosting thebreakout sessions; although they were providedwith briefing notes and suggestions for itiner-aries, the idea was that the guides took owner-ship of their tours and brought their ownpersonalities and creativity to them.

Gaining the World’s attentionAn international press delegation consisting ofleading media outlets from around the world attended the Summit, reporting on the eventand interviewing the delegates and Counsel-lors. High-impact coverage was secured acrossglobal broadcast outlets including the BBC,CNN, CNBC, Sky News, Bloomberg, AlJazeera, CCTV, SABC, TV Asahi, RTE andArise TV.

Based on Failte Ireland’s calculations regardingthe value of conferences to the local economy,the One Young World Summit generated €1.95million for Dublin and Ireland. Not only did itplace Dublin prominently on the internationalstage as a leading destination for high-profileconferences, but it also contributed tangibleeconomic benefit.

A world-class conference“From the outset, it was clear the gigantic taskof hosting the event in Ireland would requirethe management skills and experience of an international PCO with a wealth of local insightand knowledge,” explained Bob Coggins, whowas a member of the Dublin Advisory Com-mittee for One Young World 2014. “The bestdecision I made was to introduce the OneYoung World team to Conference Partners, and the result was a world-class conference delivered despite an array of complex visa and

logistical issues. The event differed from previous years as the city really got involved,and the delegates used the city as their confer-ence centre, with more than 30 venues usedover the 5 days. Thanks to the involvement ofworld-class Irish performers, local Irish children’s choirs, more than 250 volunteers, theIrish business community and – most of all –an array of Irish suppliers, the One YoungWorld Summit became truly Irish this year.

It was a privilege and an honour to be involved,but it was a pleasure and a comfort to have thesupport of Conference Partners making it easyto host one of the most meaningful annualevents on the planet.”
