Catalyst – November 3+5, 2012HW OUT PLEASE!1. What is the activity series used

for?2. Which is more reactive: lithium

or silver?3. What kinds of compounds are

involved in a double-replacement reaction?

Today’s Agenda

Catalyst Chemistry Prom 2012 Day 3! Combustion Reactions: Notes and

Practice Review and Work Time Exit Question

HW: STUDY! QUIZ TOMORROW!!!

Today’s Objectives

SWBAT predict the products of hydrocarbon combustion reactions.

SWBAT finish their Chemistry Prom Scrapbook and review for tomorrow’s quiz.

Yesterday’s Exit Question

1. What are the 4 types of chemical reactions we have learned about so far at Chemistry Prom?

2. Will the following reaction occur? Why or why not?

Ni + AuBr3 NiBr2 + Au

KNaLiCaMgAlZnFeNiSnPbHCuHgAgAu

Hydrocarbon Combustion Reactions

It’s getting hot in here…

Key Point #1: A HYDROCARBON COMBUSTION REACTION is one in which a hydrocarbon reacts/burns in the presence of oxygen gas, releasing heat and light

A hydrocarbon is any compound made of hydrogen and carbon (+ oxygen sometimes)

Examples of hydrocarbonsCH4 C2H4

Some Extra Info!

Hydrocarbons are currently the main source of the world’s electric energy and heat sources (such as home heating) because of the energy produced when burnt. Often this energy is used directly as heat such as in home heaters, which use either petroleum or natural gas. The hydrocarbon is burnt and the heat is used to heat water, which is then circulated. A similar principle is used to create electric energy in power plants.

Common properties of hydrocarbons are the facts that they produce steam, carbon dioxide and heat during combustion and that oxygen is required for combustion to take place. The simplest hydrocarbon, methane, burns as follows: CH4 + 2 O2 → 2 H2O + CO2 + Energy

We be burning…

Is C50H102 a hydrocarbon?

Will it react with O2?Will it form CO2 and

H2O?

Combustion ExamplesPredict products of the reactions!1. CH4(g) + O2(g)

2. C2H2(g) + O2(g)

CO2(g) + H2O(g)

CO2(g) + H2O(g)

Practice

Write the chemical equation for ethane gas (C2H6) burning in air. Then, answer the questions below:

1. If you see the word “BURNING” in a word equation, that means it is a ______________ reaction.

2. What are the reactants?3. What are the products?C2H6 + O2 CO2 + H2O

Your Turn!

Write chemical equations for the following reactions:

1. Methane gas (CH4) combusts.

2. Butene gas (C4H4) burns in the air.

3. Ethyne gas (C2H2) goes through a combustion reaction.

All 5 Chemical Reactions

There are 5 types of chemical hook-ups (reactions) at the prom this year.

1. Synthesis/Combination2. Decomposition3. Single Replacement4. Double-Replacement5. Combustion

Let’s come together

A SYNTHESIS/COMBINATION REACTION is one in which two or more substances combine to form one new substance. A + B AB Two substances are at the Chemistry Prom,

dancing alone…they decide to hook up…

I don’t think this is working out…

A DECOMPOSITION REACTION is one in which one substance breaks down into multiple substances, usually with the help of some kind of heat or energy AB A + B A couple at the Chemistry Prom

decides to break up

Drama on the Dance Flo!

A SINGLE-REPLACEMENT REACTION is one in which a single element replaces a similar element in a compound

A + BX AX + B A couple is dancing, and someone

else cuts in

Swing Fever!

A DOUBLE-REPLACEMENT REACTION is one in which ions switch places. You must KRISS-KROSS to write ALL formulas!

AX + BY AY + BX Two couples are dancing and decide to

switch partners!

It’s getting hot in here…

A COMBUSTION REACTION is one in which a hydrocarbon burns in the presence of oxygen gas, releasing heat and light

A hydrocarbon is any compound made of hydrogen and carbon

Ex: CH4, C2H4

6.02 x 1023

REPRESENTATIVE PARTICLES (atoms, molecules, formula units)

602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Avogadro’s Number

Just like a dozen refers to 12 objects…

The mole refers to…

Avogadro LOVES Us!

Key Point #3: Avogadro's number (6.02 x 1023) is used to convert between moles and representative particles (atoms, formula units, molecules). It all relates back to the mole… Guess what’s coming back…

OOOH, I want some more train tracks!

Key Point #4: Molar mass is the number of grams in one mole of a substance. It is used to convert between moles and mass. But Ms. Stroh, how am I ever going to find

out this information?

What is % Composition?

WORK TIME!Finish Chemistry Prom

Scrapbook and then work on Review Packet

Exit Question

1. What is a hydrocarbon?2. What other substance must be

present in order for a combustion reaction to take place?

3. What are the products of combustion reaction?
