Get Ready For Notes Pg.8-9 • Behavioral Expectations:
– Noise Level 0: Silent– Head Up– Facing Forward
• Directions:– Take 10 minutes to preview the notes on your own
–Red writining= write down in your notes– After you have previewed the notes try to answer the question: How are the white blood cells used to maximize protection against foreign pathogens? In your answer make sure to explain the different types of white blood cells.

Function of the Immune System
• Protect the body from pathogens (foreign/harmful diseases)
![Page 4: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Organs of the Immune System
• The immune system is also called the lymphatic system because it creates and processes lymph.
• Lymph is any substance that enters the lymph capillaries.
• Substances enter the lymphatic system through the lymph capillaries which are located right by the capillaries of the circulatory system.
![Page 5: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
• The purpose of lymph is to move foreign particle to the lymph nodes where they can be destroyed.
• The lymphatic vessels are just like veins and are used to transport lymph
![Page 6: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
• Lymph nodes are the main organs of the lymphatic system. They are made of units called lymphatic nodules which contain large amounts of macrophages and lymphocytes.
![Page 7: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
• The two larger organs of the lymphatic system are the Thymus and the Spleen.
![Page 8: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The role of the skin in the immune system
• The skin acts as the first line of defense against pathogens entering the body
• Creates a physical barrier- pathogens have a hard time penetrating the skin
• Creates a chemical barrier- pathogens killed by oils and acids on the skin
![Page 9: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
What carries out the function of the immune system?
• Leukocytes- White blood cells• Divided into two big groups– Granular– Agranular
•
![Page 10: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Granular
• Look like they have grains in their cells under a microscope
![Page 11: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Types of Granular Cells
1. Neutrophil- Phagocytizes (eats) small particles
2. Basophil- Kill parasites (something that lives off of another organism) and control inflammation
3. Eosinophil- Release heparin (prevents blood clots) and histamines (increase blood flow to injured tissue)
![Page 12: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Agranular
• Do not look like they have grains in their cells under a microscope
![Page 13: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Types of Agranualr Cells
1. Macrophage- Phagocytizes (eat) large particles
2. Lymphocyte- Provides immunity by creating antibodies
3. Monocytes- respond to the inflammation process and are cells that can turn into a macrophage.
![Page 14: Catalyst # 2 Pg. 7- Take out your HW Questions](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062310/568163f0550346895dd56e86/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
• Neutrophils are the most prevalent making up over half of the white blood cells.
• Lymphocytes are the second largest group followed by macrophages.
• There are very small amounts of the other two.

Homework Questions
1. What is the function of the immune system and what structures of the body are involved with the immune system?
2. Why is the skin considered the first line of defense for the immune system?
3. Identify and explain the function of the 3 types of granular and agranular cells.
4. Why do you think neutrophils are the most common type of white blood cell? Do you think there is an advantage to neutrophils being the most common type of white blood cell?
