Chalk Board Writing Skill

Skill of Black-board Writing:

Blackboards, being the visual aids, are widely used in all aspects of education and training, and are most suitable for giving a holistic picture of the lesson. A good blackboard work brings clearness in perception and the concepts being taught, and adds variety to the lesson.

Meaning of a chalk board

A blackboard or chalkboard is a reusable writing surface on which text or drawings are made with sticks of calcium sulphate, known, when used for this purpose, as chalk. Chalkboards were originally made of smooth, thin sheets of black or dark grey slate stone. Modern versions are often green or brown and are thus sometimes called a greenboard or brownboard instead

Characteristics of a good chalk board

• Its surface should be rough enough so that it is capable or holding the writing on the board.

• Its surface should be dull so that it can eliminate glare.

• Its surface should be such that the writing on the board can be easily removed by making use of a cloth or a foam duster.

• Its height should be so adjusted that it is within the easy reach of the teacher and is easily visible to the students.

Advantages of Chalk board

• It is a very convenient teaching aid for group teaching.

• It is quite economical and can be used again and again.

• Its use is accompanied by the appropriate actions on the part of the teacher. The illustrations drawn on the black board captures student’s attention.

• It is one of the most valuable supplementary teaching aids.

• It can be used as a good visual aid for drill and revision.

• It is a convenient aid for giving lesson notes to the students.

Effective use of chalk board

• Write in a clear and legible handwriting the important points on the chalk board but avoid over crowding of information on the chalk board.

• The size of the works written on blackboard should be such that they can be seen even by the backbenchers. The letters should not be less than one inch in height . The recommended height of letters on a chalk board in between 6 cm to 8 cm , for this the teacher should frequently inspect his own chalk board writing from the viewpoint of the backbench on a corner seat.

• There should be proper arrangement of light in the classroom so that the chalkboard remains glare free.

• To emphasize some points or parts of a sketch or a diagram coloured chalk be used.

• Rub off the information already discussed in the class and noted down by the student.

• Draw a difficult illustration before hand to save the class time.

• Stand on one side of the chalk board while explaining some points to the students.

• Use both upper and lowercase letters (as opposed to only capital letters). The eye recognizes words by their shape rather than the individual letters. Writing in capital letters destroys the shape and forces the reader to recognize the word by first distinguishing each letter. This significantly slows reading rate.

• If you use colored chalk or markers, be sure that the colors used are visible from the back of the classroom. Do not use more than four different colors at one time.

• Maintain eye contact with your students as much as possible. Don’t obstruct their view of what you’ve written. Write on the board, then turn and talk.

Component 1 :

• Legibility ( Easy to read ): A legible handwriting on the blackboard draws the attention of the learners and encourages them to improve upon their handwritings. In order to make handwritings more legible, the teacher should see that a clear distinction is ensured between every letter, adequate space is maintained between individual letters and words.

Component 2 :

• Size and Alignment: The size of the letters written by the teacher on the board should be uniform and large enough to be read from the last row. The size of the capital letters should be larger than that of the small letters and the handwritings should be as vertical as possible without being diverged from a line.

Component 3 :

• Highlighting Main Points: The main points or words written on the board should only be highlighted by underlying them. Colored chalks should be used suitably for the purpose of drawing the learners attention to those main points that need to be highlighted too.

Component 4 :

• Utilization of the Space: For the proper utilization of the space important words or statements should be written on the board. Overwriting on the letters should be avoided as it makes the blackboard work untidy. Only essential materials should be retained on the blackboard and unnecessary words should be rubbed off.

Component 5 :

• Blackboard Summary: In order to make teaching meaningful to the learners the teacher should develop blackboard summary at the end of the lesson. This should be so brief that the learners can recollect the whole lesson at a glance.

Component 6 :

• Correctness: While constructing sentences on the board, the teacher should be careful about correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.

• Position of the Teacher: The position of teacher should not be in between the learners and the blackboard.

Component 8 :

Contact with Pupils: The teacher, at the time of writing on the board, should maintain eye-contact with his learners. This is necessary for controlling interactions, maintaining disciplines, sustaining attentions of the learners, etc.

Things to remember• Avoid overcrowding on board --- Every thing written should be clear and easily

noticeable.• Avoid overwriting --- use the duster/wiper whole heartedly.• Avoid too much of light on the board.• Blow the duster outside the class.• Use proper punctuation marks , spelling and grammar.• Avoid excessive speedy writing on the board.• Rub the content on board after a reasonable time and warning.• Use coloured chalks to add creativity and better understanding.• Use straight lines to write. Do not write in tilted manner.• Use big letters and alphabets .• Do not talk to board while writing or drawing a diagram.• Maintain contact with students within small pauses while writing lengthier

contents.• Rub the contents on the board while leaving the class.
