Chalk Talk invites young artists from the greater Boston area to take to the pavement and make a statement.

Each year Chalk Talk asks participants to create art that will gen-erate awareness of the social issues impacting our community and our world. During this two-day festival, participants have the opportunity to learn from guest artists and speakers.

Art is a powerful means of expression and has been for man-centuries. The Chalk Talk festival was inspired by 16th century Italian street art. Vagabond artists known as Madonnari trav-eled through various festivals collecting coins from those who stopped to admire their work. Similarly, each Chalk Talk artist will collect coins in a container beside their work. At the end of each day, the money collected will be donated to an organiza-tion of the artist’s choosing.

This year’s themes are poverty, literacy and animal rights. Orga-nizations such as Oxfam America, Reach Out and Read and The World Wide Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) will be represented. Participants should consider one or more of these topics when planning their compositions.

Featured Artisit Edgar Mueller invites participants to exri-ence the illusions of his sidewalk art first hand.

Mueller grew up in the Straelen, a rural city on the western edge of Germany, a setting that inspired many of his early paintings. Mueller’s affinity for street art began at a young age. He entered his first international competition of street artists at age sixteen and went on to win at age nineteen. Mueller now holds the title ‘maestro madonnari,’ meaning master street painter, and has traveled through Europe making a living off his ephemeral art.
