Chapter 15.2Seeing an Image

CPO ScienceIntegrated Physics & Chemistry

Developing A Model How does your eye work?— Lenses

How does light travel through a lens?— Does light travel

unaffected through glass?

How does a lens form an image?

Key Questions How does a lens form an image?

What factors affect the image?

Developing An Experiment This experiment requires you

to trace the light ray from the laser

What material will we need?

Read the procedure in the Investigation Manual for part 1

Run The Experiment

Draw the ray from several angles. Make sure the ray exits the right hand side.

It may be easier to draw dashes first then connect them later using a straight edge.

Tips

Make sure to aim the laser as shown in the manual.

What did you learn?

What happened to the refracted ray as it exits the prism as you change the angle?

Developing An Experiment Will the light wave behave the

same way in a lens as in the prism because they are both glass?

Will the shape of the lens affect the light?

Run The Experiment Tips:

— Draw an axis for the lens — Move the lens straight down

the paper keeping it parallel to the axis.

What did you learn?

Can you label the key points?

Developing An Experiment How does the focal point &

focal length have to do with the image the lens forms?

Run The Experiment

Tips:— Draw an axis for the lens. — Draw 2 rays as if they came

from the tip of the arrow. — Aim the laser parallel to the

axis for the 1st ray and the 2nd ray through the center of the lens

What did you learn? Do the rays cross each other?

Can you describe this image?

Answer the questions in part 5 of the investigations?

Summary

What causes light to bend in a lens?

What is the focal point & the focal length?

How is an image formed?
