What Exactly is a Birth Defect?

Definition: Physical or structural abnormality that develops at or before birth, and is present at the time of birth especially as a result of faulty development, environment, hereditary, or injury.

Birth DefectsAbout 150,000 babies are born each

year with birth defects

The parents of 1 out of every 28 babies receive the news that their baby has a birth defect

There are over 4,000 known birth defects

Birth defects are the leading cause of death in the 1st year of life.

How do Birth Defects Affect the Infant?

There are 3 factors that cause birth defects:1. Hereditary2. Environmental3. Combination

Your group will be given an infant’s birth defect profile. The profile is usually told through the parent’s point of view and will go over: the parents discovery of their infant’s birth defect, how the birth defect affects the infant, how infant inherits the birth defect, and much more.
