December 17, 2017 - Third Sunday of Advent
The above picture is a sampling of gifts for the needy in the New Hyde Park area, purchased and donated by you, our parishioners, If you have participated in this by
purchasing a gift from one of our GIVING TREES, you have made someone’s Christmas happier! If you were not able to participate in this, please say a prayer for those in
need. The prayers count!
A huge “thank you” to Regina and Tom Friel and their social ministry team! The saints among us!

Your Gifts to God’s People
As you can see from today’s front cover of the bulletin, the good people of Holy Spirit parish respond to God by serving the least of His sisters and brothers. This is really what Christmas is all about! The cover is a picture of the gifts our parishioners purchased, picked from the giving tree, as Christmas gifts to our local neighbors in need. True generosity is not when we give from our surplus but when we give from our heart. This is exactly what we have done as a parish as we give back to God’s people what belongs to God. I thank you as a friend and as your pastor but the true thanks come from God for helping His children. May God Bless all of you!
Gifts of Service
At Holy Spirit parish, just like any other parish, the people of the parish work as God’s arms, legs, hands and feet. God blesses us with so much and we are called to share these gifts with each other, and in many cases with people we may never meet. In fact, authentic generosity is when we give not expecting anything back in return. Our Church, and parish, is filled with so many good people. You make the building a Church, you make the parish a family. Thanks for all you do!
A Special Thank You
We have a group of men in our parish who have gone above and beyond giving their time to Holy Spirit parish during my time here. This group is strictly volunteers and have, literally, saved the parish thousands of dollars (I am estimating over $35,000 – and this is not an exaggeration). Although they do not know I am acknowledging them, this is something I want to do. They are: Joe Walsh, Bill O’Neill, Joe McCartan, Gerry Fruddan, Mario Scandura and Tom Deegan.
Christmas
Jesus was born on Christmas day to change the world. – “Christmas has become the feast of gifts in imitation of God who has given himself to us. Let us allow our heart, our soul, and our mind to be touched by this fact!” (Pope Benedict XVI).
Fr. Grieco

DEACON LACHLAN
While we may be familiar with the Christmas carol, ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ ….. a good question for us to ask is…… When…. and what, are the Twelve Days of Christmas? Well, the twelve days are the days from Christmas until Epiphany on January 6th. During this entire period the Christmas season should still be celebrated by Catholics, with each day being the feast day of some of our greatest saints. Today most of us think that the Christmas season begins the day after Thanksgiving and ends on December 26th.
During and after the Reformation, Catholics in England were unable to practice their faith openly, and the celebration of the Twelve Days of Christmas was absorbed into the popular secular culture. However rather than being a time for spiritual growth, it became a time for giving gifts, partying, everything but what it originally was ……..wait a minute…..does this sound familiar? There was even a popular song…similar to the Twelve Days of Christmas we sing today…which celebrated the partying and gift giving, but made absolutely no mention of God or the reason for the celebrations. (By the way…having parties and giving gifts are great things to do at this time of year…..but we must remember why we do so.) The Catholics in England who remained true to their faith used this popular song as a means of catechizing their children….something they were forbidden to do openly. This was how they did it.
We know how the song opens….On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me……
A partridge in a pear tree…Jesus Christ (a partridge will sacrifice its life to save its young!)
Two turtle doves…..the Old and New Testaments
Three French hens…. Faith, Hope and Charity
Four calling birds……the Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
Five golden rings……first five books of the Old Testament….. The Pentateuch… which describe man’s fall into sin and the great love of God in sending a Savior
Six geese a laying…..the six days of creation
Seven swans a swimming……the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit
Eight maids a milking……the Eight Beatitudes
Nine ladies dancing……the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (there are twelve but some are similar)
Ten lords a leaping……the Ten Commandments
Eleven pipers piping….the eleven faithful Apostles
Twelve drummers drumming….the twelve points of belief in the Apostles Creed.
While we Catholics today are not told officially that we cannot practice our faith openly, there are many subtle and some not so subtle obstacles being placed in our way….usually under the guise of ‘it may offend someone’. It’s a sad reflection on our society that the peaceful practice of faith……. should be considered by some to be……… ‘offensive’.
May almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen.

PRO LIFE NEWSDon’t Forget Your Baby Bottle!
On the weekend of January 6th & 7th, the Holy Spirit Pro-Life Committee will be hosting a Baby Bottle
Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that
counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you know that they provide: free pregnancy tests ,maternity housing with eligibility requirements, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats,
diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed? We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change. Most importantly, we are asking you to
recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded
women to call The Life Center in the first place..
** Please return the bottles on January 27th & 28th **
