Clayton Whitehill

Clayton Whitehill was an Abstract Expressionist painter who was born inPhiladelphia, PA in 1898. Whitehill served in WWI and graduated from ColumbiaUniversity in 1921. He was a Professor of Art at the Philadelphia Museum of ArtMuseum School and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy, Philadelphia, PA, amongothers. In 1947, Whitehill wrote a notable book on typography titled “The Moods ofType”, which is still in print today. In the late 1950s, Whitehill and his wife moved toPerugia, Italy, where his artwork became greatly inspired by the Italian culture andlandscape. While in Italy, he exhibited with Galleria Schneider in Rome. Whitehilldied in Perugia in 1963.
