First English citizen born in America- Virginia Dare

Artist and colonist John White- left to get supplies, unable to return until 1590- colony disappeared

“Croatoan” carved into a tree- possible reference to Indian tribe to the south

Jamestown

Established north of the Lost Colony near the James River in 1607

Sponsored by the Virginia Company- about 108 men on the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and Discovery

Small settlement in the middle of Algonquin territory Led by John Smith from 1608-09 1609-10 “The starving time” On the brink of abandoning the settlement when

supplies arrived First permanent English Settlement in the New World

John Smith Hero of Jamestown Proud and boastful- inflated stories Traveled the Mediterranean- fought and

wounded fighting for Austria, kidnapped and given to princess as a gift- escaped

Sailed for America in 1606 Conflicts with natives- led defense. Kidnapped- taken to chief Powhatan

Pocahontas Chief impressed by Smith’s compass Pocahontas- 11 years old- participant in a

religious ceremony Smith- unsure of his fate- convinced

Pocahontas saved him- no real evidence Smith returned to Jamestown in friendship with

Indians Later- Pocahontas taken hostage Marriage to John Rolfe in 1614 Died of pneumonia or tuberculosis in 1617- 22

years old

Massive plague swept through the America’s in 1617- wiped out 90-95% of the population

Puritans arrived in 1620- Plymouth Massachusetts Led by William Bradford- served as governor for

30 years Intended to go to Virginia- disagreement as to how

they ended up in Massachusetts Mayflower Compact- governing document for the

colony- not everyone on the Mayflower was a Puritan

No virgin wilderness- abandoned fields due to plagues

Thanksgiving- native autumn harvest- perspective

Squanto

Algonquin from village of Patuxet- kidnapped in 1605 and taken to England

Spent 9 years in England- learned English Kidnapped and sold into slavery in Spain in

1614 Escaped back to England, arranged trip back

to America in 1619 Came home to find his entire village

destroyed by plague Essential to the survival of Plymouth colony

Farming, fishing, commodities

John Winthrop Went to Cambridge, lawyer in London,

persecuted for Puritan beliefs. Granted the charter for the

Massachusetts Bay Colony- governor Established 1630 Resisted English control of the colony Representative government- only

church members “City on a Hill” speech

Roger Williams Arrived in Boston in 1631. Ideas of freedom of worship At odds with Pilgrim teachings in Plymouth

and Salem. Fled from Massachusetts- befriended by

Indians, purchased land from them- founded Rhode Island in 1636

Peaceful relationship between colonists and Indians

Colony known for religious tolerance

Province of Maryland

Lord Baltimore was granted land between the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay

Opportunity for Catholics to escape Anglican England

Settled in 1634 Profit was a draw for many colonists- tobacco Protestants quickly outnumbered Catholics Maryland Act of Toleration 1649

William Penn

Founder of the Province of Pennsylvania 1677 Established democratic beliefs that are reflected

in US Constitution Religious Society of Friends/Quakers- Non

violence, swore no oath to the king. Expelled from Oxford for being a Quaker Fled to America to escape persecution- from

King and Puritans Grant from Charles II- sylvan for woods, Penn

for William’s father

Quakers

Full freedom of religion, fair trials, elected representatives of the people in power, and a separation of powers

Brought in massive influx of immigrants from everywhere.

Treaty with the Indians- peaceful fair relations

Anne Hutchinson

Fled to America for freedom of expression- Massachusetts Bay Colony

Fought against inferiority of women Started a women’s club, encouraged too much

thinking Taken to court, banished, lived in Rhode Island,

then fled to Dutch settlement (modern day New York)

Entire family massacred by Indians- 9 yr old daughter survived as a captive
