• Urgent Care– Definition: A place to go to in case of an emergency
situation– Alternatives: rescue squads, people driving themselves
and obtaining rides from family and friends• Using these alternatives is a problem for newcomers to the
county, for those with language barriers and those without resources (telephone, internet, etc)
– Currently available resources are taxed to capacity• The rescue squad is quick, but unable to respond to more
than one call at a time• The system is misused, many in the county go to the ER for
regular healthcare

• Cost/Insurance– Cost is a barrier to healthcare for many
unemployed residents, yet even employed residents find they have trouble affording insurance• Some residents have to chose between the cost of
food and the cost of medication
– Many residents are not aware of available resources• Solutions: use schools, churches, libraries, word of
mouth and newspapers; also make a routinely updated list of resources

• Alcohol/Drug Use– Drug abuse is more easily recognized among
youth – using technology information about new drugs spreads more quickly
– Yet there is a lot of prescription drug abuse among the older population in the county
– Since Fluvanna is a rural county and there are not many options for “fun,” this contributes to drug and alcohol abuse in the county

associated with mental health issues deters many people from getting the assistance they require• Many still fear being seen due to a “small town”
mentality – everyone knows who you are and what you are doing
– Mental health services tend to be surrounded by the same barriers as other health services

• Weight and Obesity– Problems: not enough activity, genetic makeup,
eating non-nutritious foods• Parents do not have enough time and knowledge to
prepare nutritious food for their families• Fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores
available in the county – grocery stores do not want to “run the risk [of opening a store in this rural location]”
– Education as an important way to combat this issue – through knowledge, members of the community can make more informed choices
