Comparison

Use to compare two or more nouns that have the same quality

Use to indicate that one of the nouns has a greater, lesser, or equal degree of a quality.

Two types of comparisons: Comparative or Superlative.

Comparative

The comparative compares a quality of one person or thing with the same quality in another person or thing.

The comparison can indicate that one or the other has more, less, or the same amount of the quality.

English

Greater degree:

1. Paul is taller than Mary.2. Mary is prettier than her sister.3. Paul is more intelligent than Mary.4. My car is more expensive than your car.

Lesser Degree:

1. Paul is not as tall as Mary.2. My car is less expensive than your car.

English

Equal Degree:

1. Paul is as tall as Mary.2. My car is as expensive as your car.

• There are the same three degrees of comparison of adjectives as in English.

• Remember that, in French, agreement between the adjective and the noun is always required.

• Since a comparative adjective always describes more than one noun, it always agrees in gender and number with the subject.

1. Paul est plus actif que Marie.

Lesser Degree:

Marie est moins active que Paul.

Equal Degree:

Marie est aussi active que Paul.

Example: Cet hôtel est aussi moderne que l’autre.

Example: J’ai moins d’argent que vous.

Stressed pronouns are used after queExample: Je suis aussi intelligent que toi.The comparative adjective bon/bonne is

meilleur/meilleure.Example: Je suis meilleur en tennis que toi.The comparative adverb bien is mieux.Example: Je joue mieux.

Superlative

The superlative is used to stress the highest and lowest degrees of a quality

The superlative of highest degree is formed differently depending on the length of the adjective.

The superlative of bien is le mieux.

English

Greatest degree:Mary is the smartest.Mary is the most intellient.

Lowest degree:Paul is the least active.His car is the least expensive of all.

• The superlative of greatest degree is formed:le, la, or les noun + plus + adjective

Example: Marie est la plus active de la famille.

• The superlative of lowest degree is formed:le,la, or les + moins + adjective

Example:Paul est le moins actif de la classe.

Le/la/les + plus/moins + adjective (+de)Ex. Voici l’hotel le plus moderne de la ville.

Le plus/le moins + adverb Ex. Marie voyage le plus souvent.

Le plus de/le moins de + nounEx. C’est Paul qui a le plus d’argent.
