– A contraceptive device prevents conception or fertilization from occurring.

– Also known as “birth control?”

• Fertility-based methods– Cannot have intercourse during the fertile time

of the month– Egg can live 12-24 hours however 48 is used– Sperm can live in a woman’s body up to 5 days

• Benefits:– Shared responsiblilty

– Protects against most STD

– Protects against pregnancy

– Can be inserted up to 8 hours before sex

– Disadvantages:

Intrauterine devices – IUD’s

IUD

• Must be inserted by a doctor

• Effective for 5-12 years

• 99% effective in preventing pregnacy

• No protection from STI or HIV
