WHAT BNX ENCOURAGES EMERGING FARMERS TO DO

• TO START WITH WHAT THEY HAVE• UTILIZE THE LAND THEY HAVE TO PRODUCE ESSENTIAL OIL CROPS AND

VEGETABLES FOR FOOD SECURITYWORK THEIR OWN LAND

• PROPAGATE THEIR OWN PLANTS TO EXPAND

• WE ALSO TRAIN THEM ON MANUAL WEED CONTROL

• IDENTIFYING COMMON PESTS AND DISEASES ON THEIR CROPS

AND CONTROL THEM

• WE ALSO TRAIN THEM ON CORRECT IRRIGATING METHODS

BNX is a member of SAEOPA willing to transfer Skills on production of essential oils

WHAT BNX ENCOURAGES EMERGING FARMERS TO DO

BNX is a member of SAEOPA willing to transfer Skills on production of essential oils

WHERE DO I GET A DISTILLER?

EDESA builds the best units in different sizes at very

reasonable prices. He delivers in all areas and also

exports to foreign countries. The follow up and post

service is reported excellent.

They also give training on operating the distiller

• Use borrowed distillation Facility locally

Oils should be stored in cellar conditions and in glass or

stainless steel. Vegetable oils can be stored in food grade

plastic drums out of direct light and in cool temperatures.

HOW DO I STORE THE OIL?

WHAT IS THE BET PLANT DENSITY FOR THE CROP?

The global tendency is as dense as possible. For best

indication the production guides from DAFF available on

the website , can be used for different crops and taking

into account the harvesting method and if irrigation is

applied. For Rose geranium 40-50 000 plants per ha

proved optimal.

Protecting Farmers from Wrong Planting Methods

Where do I get fertilizing and irrigations recommendation?

There is a general recommendation per crop

made available on the production guides as

provided by DAFF.

Your soil will need to be tested first (ARC)

* We recommend certified organic

When is the best time and how frequently do I harvest?

Usually the state and offset of

flowering indicate the best time to

harvest for best quality. Some

areas allow for three to four

harvests for geranium while others

will only be able to harvest two to

three times per year.

What is the best harvesting method?

It depends on the crop and area mostly.

For geranium and it is best to harvest by hand and secateurs

while a bush cutter works best for rosemary.

Lemon grass, Lavender and Lippia are harvested by sickles

although mechanical harvesting is done increasingly by

harvesters in all crops.

I have a crop X and would like to know who can process it.

Most producers have their own distillery and/or seed presses.

There are also producers who process for others as it is the

most expensive investment. A list of such processors are

available from the data base of SAEOPA.

THOUGH HDI FARMERS STILL LACK SUPPORT TO GET THEIR

CROPS DISTILLED but few do have.
