Minor revision to the EPA04 Diagnostics course CH1 (Information Gathering)
• Our original intent was to use many screen shots so that the students could use their course books as a reference tool for the future.
Thi ld h b id id d DDCSN / PSL did ’ d • This would have been a great idea provided DDCSN / PSL didn’t undergo major changes in their look and feel on a fairly regular basis, mismatching many of the screen shots with the current set up.
• We are planning on changing chapter one on learning to use DDCSN / PSL with general exercises that take the students into all the important areas in order to fill in the exercise answersorder to fill in the exercise answers.
• We are shedding a lot of screen shot slides from this chapter but in the end the students will have covered just as much material.
• No matter what format the menus take, the data being asked for in the exercises will be there.

• What we want to do is give each instructor the flexibility to determine the DDCSN / PSL skills of his students and decide how much time will be needed to go through the current DDCSN /PSL menu structure.
• We know that from necessity you’ve been altering the material in this direction We know that from necessity you ve been altering the material in this direction and we’re making changes to the student books and presentation material to reflect this.

4) The 07 aftertreatment system diagnostics would be expanded.
5) These changes would represent “final” adjustments to both the EPA04 and 07
curriculum.
Final note: Retirement date for the 04/07 curriculum is being examined using
engine warranty data.

Training Support for 2013 CDU Program • The 2013 program will be larger than the 2010 program.
• The CDU training program for the field service network would take the following approach:
1 Nationwide coverage of basic CDU 2013 information this would be accomplished 1. Nationwide coverage of basic CDU 2013 information, this would be accomplished through web based training delivered through the G2 network.
2. Provide instructor led training to an expert support group to handle more difficult issues at a local levelissues at a local level
3. The expert support group taking 2013 instructor led training would include technicians from dealers that work closely with CDU fleets, technicians from CDU fleets DSMs closely connected with CDU customers designated members of the fleets, DSMs closely connected with CDU customers, designated members of the CSC supporting the 2013 program. The suggested size of this group would be approximately 100 members. This would allow training to be competed for this group in a reasonable amount of time (about 3 months).
4. Hold CDU information updates in webinars for our expert group as the program evolves

2013 SOP Training Program2013 SOP Training ProgramWhere are going in 2013 with the release of the new DD engine program?
• In 2013 there will be some significant changes coming to the DD engine platform and • In 2013 there will be some significant changes coming to the DD engine platform and
aftertreatment system. The training network purchased their DD training engines in
2008 and then modified them with new parts to reflect the most significant changes in 2008 and then modified them with new parts to reflect the most significant changes in
2010.
• Our general position at this time is that the training network will need to order new
engines (and complementary equipment) in 2013 to provide training at their locations.
Participating training programs should plan for this contingency in their budgets over
the next couple years.
• The training development team in Detroit does not have access to the new engine yet.
We expect to get one for evaluation by early July and will begin to evaluate what type of We expect to get one for evaluation by early July and will begin to evaluate what type of

How will new 2013 classes impact the DD engine certification in 2013?
• Will a fourth week of instructor led training be required for new technicians just
beginning to get their certification at that time?
B d th b t i f ti tl il bl th l i t h i t t l d • Based on the best information currently available the plan is to have an instructor led
2013 update course.
• Because we understand concerns regarding technician time out of the shop to attend Because we understand concerns regarding technician time out of the shop to attend
training we are going to be revising the material that currently makes up the 2010 Update
course and place the content into the appropriate parts of the DD Major Repair and DD
Diagnostics courses.
• These revisions will be completed at the same time we roll out the 2013 Update course.
This way a new technician seeking expert training certification in 2013 will still need to
complete 3 instructor led classes and not four.

Continuing Continuing Education Projects Projects
Daimler TrucksTP/PNA 16
Continuing Education Projects Continuing Education Projects In recent years significant hardware changes and diagnostic methods have occurred in many productsmany products.
In an effort to meet training milestones and remain current with their certification a large majority of technicians take their instructor led training within the first 18 months a new ILT course is offered.
The G2 quiz program seeks help technicians stay current by selecting certain SIBs and TS letters that technicians need to read and pass quizzes on to maintain their TS letters that technicians need to read and pass quizzes on to maintain their certification.

Continuing Education Projects Continuing Education Projects • This approach works well in general however with initiatives like the warranty reduction
and downtime duration projects there may be requests from management to provide and downtime duration projects there may be requests from management to provide more detailed material to technicians.
• The training development team has become an integral part of these cross functional teams. There will be an increase in information like the pumping elements replacement video and the step by step review of the new advanced diagnostic written for the DD EGR system.
• We are looking at creating a web course to explain the new DD fuel system diagnostics to all DD technicians.

Essential Tool Program Essential Tool Program
• In order to maintain their status as an authorized training location, each location is
required to have its own set of essential tools (not on loan from the shop).
• In the distant past I am told that if a tool was deemed essential for the shop it was also
i i ishipped to the training center.
• Pluses and minuses with this policy included:
1) There was no doubt or question about whether a tool would be sent to training 1) There was no doubt or question about whether a tool would be sent to training.
Administration of the program was minimal. This was no small consideration
because PC data management systems at the time were relatively primitive. g y y p
2) If a student attending class had a question on using any tool it would be available.
3) On the minus side a training program would find itself purchasing many tools it
would seldom (if ever) use.
Daimler TrucksTP/PNA 20
Essential Tool Program Essential Tool Program The current essential tool program has evolved to try and keep a large number of unused
tools accumulating:
• With the current program we are still able to take part in the essential tools shipment
t t th b t ibl l i ( t f th l i iti l d i i ) program to get the best possible release price (as part of the large initial ordering price).
Tools purchased after this initial shipment may cost significantly more.
• Database technology allows the Training Development Group to review the tools prior to Database technology allows the Training Development Group to review the tools prior to
release and designate them as training tools or not.
• One issue that makes the decision process a little more problematic is that we are asked
to make calls on tools up to year before they’re released.
• We are also subject to limitations imposed by those who perform tool distribution.
• In general we sign up for tools that have significant value to the training program. In the
case of a mechanical tool the need is normally more clear cut. In the realm of electronics it
i t dil t h th d f t ti d i d l
Daimler TrucksTP/PNA 21
is not as readily apparent when the need for a testing device or module may appear.
Essential Tool Program SummaryEssential Tool Program - Summary
• The need for uniform standards across all training locations dictates there needs to an
expected level of equipment at all certified training locations.
• Selection of tools for training is not an exact science. Tools may become obsolete
f i i i O i ibecause of a design change or new approach to diagnostics. Others with little use upon
initial release may become valuable because a new failure mode suddenly appears.
• The current selection system is vast improvement over the older system of “all or • The current selection system is vast improvement over the older system of all or
nothing” but is still far from perfect.
• Any practical suggestions that might fit into the current restraints that come from y p gg g
outside the training group are welcome.

• Testing for all ILT courses is currently conducted
via on-line multiple choice exams.
• Kevin has asked us to have a discussion about
f f i i i iwhether other forms of testing might be included in
a student’s evaluation.
• For example during the DD15 customer demo • For example during the DD15 customer demo
courses there were some stations set up on the
final day of class where students actually performed y y p
hands-on tasks at different stations.
• Any ideas we come up with would need to

Center offered a course on Fleet Management
Information products.

course was no longer offered primarily because
about two thirds of the content was no longer about two thirds of the content was no longer
supported (i.e. Data Logger, Pro-Driver Reports,
Data Summaries, IRIS, RDI, etc.))

Reports. This material is treated through our web
based course and fuel economy in a section of the
EPA04 Diagnostics course.
