Top 10 Things To Consider

#1: Know Your Systems

• What makes a good UAS operator?• No = Your nephew who likes video games• Yes = Attentive to detail, cautious, reliable

• Consider both manufacturer training and flight school• Prepare for aeronautical exam and renewal every 2 years• Institute best practices/policies:

• No flying under the influence of drugs or alcohol• Require appropriate amount of sleep• Document all flights

#2: Select and Train Your Operators

• Practice on a simulator (20 hours min)• System familiarity is significant predictor of

flight safety• Change something, fly again• Maintain currency• Log flight hours

#3: Fly

• UAS will drive Big Data• 200MB – 2GB/minute during collection• One active UAS operator can easily

generate 3TB/week• Consider derivative products

#4: Get Better At Data Management

#5: Get Good At Data Processing

• Acquisition is only 20% of process• Software products aplenty for processing• Be concerned about:

• Certificates of Authority• Public entities only

• 333 exemptions• Private companies• Several months to obtain• Need a pilot’s license• Obtain COA on top of the exemption – depends on airspace

• Rule 107 - Notice of Proposed Rule Making for Commercial Use of sUAS• Best case scenario by elections, 2016• Likely to limit to line of sight only, <500’ AGL, daylight hours,

and not over people not involved, B/C/D/E airspace with ATC permission and G without permission
