NEW DELHI/JAIPUR, June27:

Embattled Rajasthan ChiefMinister Vasundhara Rajereturned to Jaipur after takingpart in NITI Aayog delibera-tions in Delhi today withoutmeeting Prime MinisterNarendra Modi or BJP chiefAmit Shah triggering specula-tion that the party top brasswanted to avoid her.

Raje, who is embroiled inthe Lalit Modi controversy, arrived in the national capitalfrom Jaipur at around 9.30 amand returned by a special planein the afternoon after over fourhours.

BJP sources insisted that ameeting of the Prime Ministeror the BJP President with Rajeduring her visit to the nationalcapital was never discussed. They also said the two top party

leaders did not meet most of theBJP Chief Ministers who werein Delhi for the meeting.

Amid speculation that Rajewould meet BJP top brass inDelhi to personally give herversion of events, her officetoday said she was not sched-uled to meet anyone but hadgone there only to attend ameeting of NITI Ayog.

The CMO, in a statement inJaipur, said after attending theNITI Ayog meeting she hadcome back directly to Jaipur.

Raje gave media the slipafter the NITI Aayog meeting.

Even as a large media con-tingent was waiting at the gatefrom which she had entered,Raje's cavalcade left from therear gate.

The BJP yesterday backedRaje in the face of the opposi-tion's demand that she quit over

her links with tainted formerIPL boss Lalit Modi.

Raje, who has been facingmounting Congress pressure toquit in connection with the'Lalitgate', seems to havesecured the Central leadership'sbacking for now.

Last night, after a meetingbetween Modi and Shah, partysources indicated that the topleadership of the party hadaccepted Raje's defence in thecontroversy.

Unfazed by the mountingCongress demand for Raje's res-ignation, the BJP continued todefend the Chief Minister withits spokesman SudhanshuTrivedi asserting that there is"no substance" in the rivalparty's allegations.

Congress took a swipe atNarendra Modi over the row, accusing him of following"Raje dharma" and "not rajdharma" by shielding theRajasthan Chief Minister andExternal Affairs MinisterSushma Swaraj, who had alsohelped Lalit Modi in obtainingtravel papers from Britain.

Hitting back, BJP secretaryShrikant Sharma said Congressis raking up "baseless charges"against its leaders and allegedthat the opposition party is asymbol of "corruption and com-mission". "BJP Governmentdoes not have to learn 'raj dhar-ma' from a party as tainted asCongress," he said.

In Jaipur, civil rights groupsheld protests, demanding Raje'sresignation.

BJP sources said last nightthat the party's top brass agreedwith Raje's defence over thetwin charges facing her.

She told the party that thedocument showing her to havesigned an affidavit to supportLalit Modi's immigration appli-cation to the UK Governmentwas a "draft" and never aquireda legal status as she had "backedout of it later and never deposedbefore a British court", sourcessaid.

On the allegation that thetainted cricket czar, who isaccused of laundering moneyover Rs 700 cr, invested in herson's company and she ownedshares in it, she said all transac-tion were reported before theauthorities and are legal. (PTI)

"In a democracy, people havethe final say. Our record on devel-opment makes us confident thatwe will win again in 2016,"Banerjee tweeted.

When asked about Banerjee'stweet, state Finance Minister AmitMitra said, "It is better to ask herabout the tweet. But she said thatpeople have the last word. She saidso because many developmentshad taken place, like rise in planexpenditure, capital expenditure, improvement in physical andsocial infrastructure."

"Thus she said that she is con-fident on the basis of work done inthe state. This was based on evi-dence which had actually takenplace on the ground. It is naturaland logical," Mitra said.
