Bourse extended its volatile behavior showing clear lack of directionamidst economic concerns. The benchmark index remained in thegreen during initial half of trading touching a high of 5,758.7 (+28.4),before witnessing a downward trend to close at its low of 5,726.1points. The S&P SL20 also followed a similar pattern as it too settledclose to its intra-day low at 3,212.6 points with a higher dip of 12.3points with notable losses being occurred in Nestle (Lanka) ,Commercial Bank & Sampath Bank . The turnover dropped to
LKR484.4 mn.
The most recent economic developments including the risinginflationary pressure which is expected to keep policy rates on hold, creating uncertainty over the direction of market interest rates overthe short term, which in turn would affect the economic growth, considerably disrupting the overall market sentiments.Consequently, the broader index has dropped +100 points over thepast 4 trading days. However, we advise value seekers to make useof the current downtrend to accumulate on the stocks whichparticularly have dropped on thin volumes as we believe this to bea temporary setback.
Heavyweight, John Keells Holdings wrote the days market story asthe counter alone added c.68% to the days turnover. Two parcelsaccumulating to 500k shares in the counter were crossed off atLKR235.0. On-board interest also heightened in the counter as anumber of large deals were handled including 140k and 210.4k
share blocks at a similar price. Consequently the counter was seenrenewing its 52-week high price at LKR235.3, before closing with a0.9% advance at LKR235.0.
Interest in the banking sector remained prominent with notableactivity in Commercial Bank , National Development Bank HattonNational Bank , DFCC Bank & Sampath Bank , where the latter saw itsprice gliding down 2.9% to close at LKR227.6 amidst thin volumes.
Buying interest emerged strong in Dialog Axiata with heavy on-board interest including a c.1.1 mn share parcel. The counter closed
flat at LKR9.1. Selling pressure was evident in diversified sector players; Softlogic Holdings & Vallibel One .
