Division of Student Affairs and Administrative Support Units

• TheDivisionofStudentAffairsisoneofthelargestemployersatVirginiaTech,withmorethan3,300employees,includingfaculty,staff,wage,students,andgraduateassistants.

• The2012-13revenuebudgetfortheDivisionofStudentAffairstotalsapproximately$135million,ofwhich$1.9millionareeducationandgeneralfundsand$1.5millionareuniquemilitaryactivitiesfunds.Theremaining$131.5millionaccountsfor49percentoftheuniversity’stotalauxiliaryenterprisefunds.

• TheDivisionofStudentAffairsisresponsibleformorethan60buildingsthroughoutVirginiaTech’scampus,consistingofnearly1.6millionassignablesquarefeet.Thisrepresentsapproximately28percentofthetotalassignablesquarefeetonthecampusandincludes10diningfacilitiesand47residencehalls.

• TheDivisionofStudentAffairsiscommittedtosupportingtheuniversity’sAdministrativeQualityandImprovement(AdQI)process.Eachofthe15departmentswithinthedivisionisactivelyengagedinassessmentofstudentlearning.Eachassociateandassistantvicepresidentconductsongoingassessmentsofadministrativefunctions.Alldivisiondepartmentsundergocomprehensiveprogramreviewseveryfiveyears.

• TheDivisionofStudentAffairshasrecentlytakenstepstocreateacultureofcollaborationandorganizationalefficiency.TheStudentActivitiesandUniversityUniondepartmentsweremergedintoasingleStudentCentersandActivitiesdepartmentduring2011-12,takingadvantageofthecloseproximityandsimilarmissionsofthetwounits.Inthatsameyear,HousingServicesandResidenceLifewerealignedintoaunifiedHousingandResidenceLifedepartmenttobetterfocusonthestudentresidentiallearningexperience.Inaddition,thedivisionhasconsolidateditsadministrativesupportunits,bringingtogetherHumanResources,InformationTechnology,andCommunicationsstafftoshareresourcesandprovidecross-trainingandback-upfor criticalservices.

Recent Honors and Successes

• Campus Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center:ReceivedtheNASPAAwardforProgrammingExcellenceandobservedadeclineinat-riskdrinkersby8percentandinhigh-riskdrinkersby10percent.

• Career Services:Registeredstudentsfortheprofessionaladvisingservicegrewfrom321in2010-11to759in2011-12,a136percentincrease.(contiued)

• Cook Counseling Center:ReceivedIACSandAPAaccreditation,awardsforexcellencebyACAandUCCD,andisdoingpioneeringworkforschools indistress.Onlyaverysmallnumberofcounselingcentersinthenationhavebothoftheseaccreditations.HasadoctoralinternshipinprofessionalpsychologyapprovedbytheAmericanPsychologicalAssociation.

• Corps of Cadets:VirginiaTechhasthehighestcommissioningrateofanymulti-serviceseniormilitarycollege.

• Cranwell International Center:Supportedtheadmissionsprocessfor363newundergraduateinternationalstudentsbyprovidingthemwithimmigrationdocumentsandorientationprogrammingforfall2012.

• Dean of Students:Casemanagementpracticesnationallyrecognized,convenedfirstnationalCaseManagementRoundtable,anddeveloped astrongCareTeammodel.

• Dining Services:The2013editionofthePrincetonReviewrankedVirginiaTechnumber2amongcollegediningprograms.

• Fraternity and Sorority Life:Inspring2012,thefraternityandsororitystudentgradepointaverage(3.157)washigherthantheoverallundergraduategradepointaverage(3.126).

• Housing and Residence Life:InstitutedaverysuccessfulResidenceLifeResourceOfficerprogram.Threewell-knownandvisibleofficershaveincreasedcommunicationwithstaffandfurtherdevelopedtrustthroughmentoringstudents.Theofficersregularlyattendfloorprograms,hallprograms,andstaffmeetings.TheVirginiaTechPoliceDepartmentplanstoaddanotherpositionasresourcesbecomeavailable.

• Multicultural Programs and Services:Initiatedthe“Let’sGoHeroes”campaigninassociationwithVeteransDaytorecognizeVirginiaTech’sveteransandtheirfamilies.

• Recreational Sports:In2012,morethan25,000

students,faculty,andstaffvisitedMcComasandWarMemorialHallsatleastonce,resultinginmorethan625,000totalvisitsbetweenAugustandMay.Between2,500and3,000studentsusedMcComasHalleachday.

• Schiffert Health Center:ReceiveditsseventhconsecutiveAAHCaccreditation,theGoldStandardHealthcareaward,an89percentstudentsatisfactionrate,andaddedorthopedicmedicinetoitsservices.

• Services for Students with Disabilities:ReceivedrecognitionforinnovativeworkwithAspergersyndromeandcoordinated8,400hoursofvolunteernote-takingservices.

• Student Centers and Activities:Morethan2,700studentorganizationmeetingsandeventsweresupportedduringthefall2012semester.

• Student Conduct:Inthe2011-12evaluationofthestudentconductprocess,thosestudentswhohaveexperiencewiththesystemevaluatedtheprocesswellaboveaverageandonparwithotherinstitutionsparticipatingintheNationalAssessmentofStudentConductAdjudicationProcessesproject.Priorto2011-12,thestudentsatVirginiaTechconsistentlyratedthesystemlowerthantheotherinstitutionsparticipatingin theNASCAPproject.

Student Engagement

• FromthenationalProfileofToday’sCollegeStudentsurvey:

� Thepercentageofundergraduatestudentswhoindicatedthattheystronglyorsomewhatagreethattheyhavebecomemoreopen-mindedaboutdiversity-relatedissuessincestartingcollegeincreasedfrom53percentin2008to59 percentin2012,exceedingthedivision’s goalof56percent.

� Thepercentageofundergraduatestudentswhoindicatedthattheywouldcorrectorchallengeastereotypeuponhearingadiscriminatoryorstereotypicalcommentincreasedfrom34percentin2008to40percentin2012,exceedingthedivision’sgoalof37percent.(continued)

Student Engagement (continued)

• StudentparticipationinDivisionofStudentAffairsleadershipprogramsincreasedby75percentbetween2004and2012,asaresultofnewinitiativesdevelopedbytheDeanofStudentsOffice,FraternityandSororityLife,andStudentCentersandActivities.

• Studentengagementinwellnessandhealth-relatedactivitiesincreasedby84percentbetween2004and2012,drivenbyincreaseduseofSchiffertHealthCenter’sonlinehealthassessmentsandincreasedparticipationinhealtheducationprograms,recreationalsportsopportunities,andalcohol-freeeveningprograms.

• Studentinvolvementininternationalandmulticulturalcompetencyprogramsincreasedby35percentbetween2004and2012,withnewprogramofferingsfromMulticulturalProgramsandServicesandFraternityandSororityLifeaswellasincreasedparticipationinCranwellInternationalCenterprograms.

Campus Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center

• Providedalcoholeducationandinterventionservicestomorethan1,000studentsreferredthroughthestudentconductsystem.

• Providedmorethan75alcoholabusepreventionoutreachprogramsforstudents.

• Supervisedacadreof14peereducatorswhoprovideoutreachprogrammingforstudents.

• Supportedandcoordinatedweekendalcohol-freesocialactivitiesforstudents.

• Workedwithcitizens,neighborhoodassociations,police,andlocalbusinessestoaddressalcohol-relatedissuesinthetownofBlacksburg.

Career Services

• In2011-12,CareerServicessawalmost3,500undergraduatestudentsforcareeradvising.

• Thenumberofon-campusinterviewsincreasedby7percentto7,189,with2,989studentsparticipatingininterviews.

• JoblistingsonHokies4Hireincreasedby23percentto7,460.

• Thenumberofcompaniesregisteredforthe2012ConnectionCo-opandInternshipJobFairincreasedby37percentto149.(continued)

Cook Counsel ing Center

• In2011-12,CookCounselingCentersawmorethan2,600studentsformorethan16,000visits.

• Madecollaborativearrangementstohavecounselorspresentin:

� theGraduateLifeCenterinordertoreachinternationalstudentsandgraduatestudents;

� theVirginia-MarylandRegionalCollegeofVeterinaryMedicinetobemoreaccessibletobusyVet-Medstudents;

� theAthleticsDepartmentforeasieraccesstostudentsmovingbetweenpractices;

� andEastEgglestonnearthecenterofcampusandtheDeanofStudentsOffice.

Corps of Cadets

• Fall2012markedthelargestenteringclassofcadets(421)andlargestcorps(1,066)since1968.

• Morethan200cadetsintheCitizen-Leader Trackprogramarepreparingtoenterthe public-privatesector.

• Constructiononnewresidencehallswill beginin2013.

Cranwell International Center

• Providedanoff-campusexperienceinSouthwestVirginiaculturefor40undergraduateand60graduatestudents.

• HostedtheInternationalFallSocialinSquiresStudentCenter,bringingtogether260membersoftheinternationalcommunitywithlocalanduniversityvolunteersforfoodanddance.

• PartneredwithCampusAlcoholAbuse PreventionCentertoprovideanalcohol-freetailgateexperiencefor100internationalstudents.

• HostedPieDayduringThanksgivingweektoprovideamealfor211membersoftheinternationalcommunity,universityfaculty andstaff,andlocalvolunteers.

Dean of Students Office

• Theadvocacyteamservedmorethan1,800studentsin2011-12,assistingstudentsandfamiliesinmanaginglifesituationsthatmaychallengeastudent’sacademicpersistence.

• HokieCampparticipationhasgrownfrom153participantsin2008to875in2012.Ninety-sixpercentofparticipatingstudentssurveyedstatedthatHokieCampimprovedtheirabilitytodevelopearlyconnectionstootherstudentsandcampusresources.AlmostallrespondentsstatedthatHokieCampincreasedtheirappreciationforVirginiaTech’straditionsandvalues,specificallyUt Prosim(ThatIMayServe)andthePrinciples ofCommunity.

• PartnershipswithacademicunitscontinuetobeahighpriorityfortheDeanofStudentsOffice.Theconnectionsmadethroughthesepartnerships areinvaluableinofferingholisticsupport toourstudents,particularlyduringnew studentprogramming.

Dining Services

• Approximately6.2millionmealsareservedeachyear.

• On-campussalestotalapproximately $45millionannually.

• Nationalbrandsinourdiningcentershaveannualgrosssalesofmorethan$9.5million.

• Largestsingleemployeroncampus,employingmorethan1,500people,includingstudents.

Fraternity and Sorority Life

• Eighteenpercentoftheundergraduate population(3,928)participatedin56fraternity andsororitychapters.

• In2011,fraternityandsororitycommunitymembersperformed80,038hoursof communityserviceanddonated$373,083.46 tophilanthropicorganizations.

Housing and Residence Life

• Morethan100facultyandacademicpartnersworkinresidentialcollegesandliving-learningcommunities(LLCs).

• Designedalearninglabstudio-classroomforengineering,biological,andlifesciencesstudentsintheCurieLLCinLeeHalltosupportouracademicpartnership.

• Studenttostaffresidentialratiosare:oneacademicprofessionalfacultyto500studentsandoneresidentialadvisorto40students.

• TheResidentialCollegeatWestAmblerJohnstonHallopenedinfall2012.Conductreferrals,alcoholreferrals,anddamagetothefacilityhavedroppedfromratespriortotherenovationofAmblerJohnstonasaresidentialcollege.

• Thereareplanstoopenthreeadditionalresidentialcollegesin2015,2018,and2021.

• OpenedthePritchardAcademicResourceCenter(PARC)in2011-12tooffertutoring,academicadvising,andacademicworkshops.Fouradditionalacademicresourcecenters(ARCs) areplannedfordiverselocationsinresidencehalls,onetobeopenedannuallyoverthenext fouryears.

Multicultural Programs and Services

• WithassistanceandadvisementfromMPS,theBlackStudentAlliancehomecomingconcertfeaturingcomedianKevinHartsoldout,with morethan2,900ticketspurchasedinlessthanthreehours.

• Nearly350newSafeZonealliesweretrainedbytheendof2012.In2013,thevolunteertrainercorpswillincreaseby100percentwiththeadditionofsevennewtrainees.

• Sincefall2012,inadditiontoitsregularprogrammingforheritagemonthsandoffice-basedprograms,MPShascollaboratedwithbothacademicandnon-academicpartnersonmorethanadozenprograms.

Recreational Sports

• Employsmorethan500studentsinpositionsthatdevelopleadershipandjobskillsincommunication,timemanagement,conflictresolution,programplanninganddevelopment,marketing,andteamwork.Manyofthesestudentsserveassupervisorstotheirpeersandmanyobtainnationalcertificationsintheirspecificemploymentdiscipline.

• Morethan12,000studentsparticipatedinintramuralandclubsports,providingthemwithcompetitiveoutlets,exerciseopportunities,teambuildingexperience,andsportsmanshipandleadershipskillsthatcanleadtoalife-longpracticeofcivility.

• Fitnessprogramssuchasgroupexercise,personaltraining,runningclubactivities,bodyandexerciseanalysis,andavarietyofincentiveprogramsareprovidedtomorethan5,400studentseachyear.

Schiffert Health Center

• Nearly15,000individualsutilizedSchiffert HealthCenterservices,abouthalfofthestudentpopulation.

• Morethan11,800labtestswereperformed.

• Approximately40,000prescriptionswerefilledattheSchiffertHealthCenterpharmacy.

• Thereweremorethan40,000visitstoSchiffertHealthCenterin2011-12,including2,000woundcarevisitsforminortocomplexprocedures,1,959X-raysperformed,and393dietitianvisits.

• Thecenteraveragesbetween250and300visits eachday.

Services for Students with Disabi l it ies

• ServicesforStudentswithDisabilities(SSD)hasseenanincreaseinthenumberofstudentsservedduringafive-yearperiod,from737studentsin2007-08to1,071studentsin2011-12,a45percentincrease.

• From2007-08to2011-12,SSDrecordeda182percentincreaseinthenumberofnote-takingrequestsandan81percentincreaseinthenumberofalternatetextformatrequests.

• Inthepastfiveyears,thenumberofstudentappointmentsincreasedby25percent.

• Inthesamefive-yearperiod,SSDsawa53percentincreaseinthenumberoftestsadministeredintheofficebecauseofalack ofadequatespaceavailabletofaculty oncampus.

• OfthestudentsregisteredwiththeSSDofficeforthe2011-12academicyear,50percentwerenotdiagnoseduntilafterenrollingincollege.

Student Centers and Activit ies

• Thefall2012Victoria’sSecretconcertontheDrillfielddrew12,000attendees.

• Thereare47facilitatorsand284studentsparticipatinginLeadershipTech,aco-curricularcertificateprogramdesignedtodevelopfutureleadersthroughserviceandlearningexperiences.

• Facilitytrafficcountsfor2012:

Student Conduct

• In2011-12,theuniversitystudentconductsystemreceivedandprocessed1,779individualstudentincidents.Ofthose,1,320(74percent)involvedmalestudentsand459(26percent)involvedfemalestudents.

• Duringthesameyear,2,134backgroundcheckswerecompletedforgovernmentinvestigators,UnitedStatesOfficeofPersonnelManagement,lawschools,transfercertifications,andVirginiaTechdepartments.

• Therewere23studentconductappealsin 2011-12,adecreaseof63percentfromthe 62appealsmadein2010-11.
