All of the children at thesummer camp — a pilot pro-gram for a new school calledthe Conductive EducationCenter of San Francisco —have cerebral palsy, a neuro-logical disorder that affectsmovement and coordination.Their parents enrolled themin the camp to learn basicmotor skills using a curricu-lum called conductive educa-tion developed in the 1950s byHungarian educator andphysical rehabilitative practi-tioner András Petõ. But in this summer campclassroom, instructors place less emphasis on col-oring inside the lines. They’re more concerned withjust making sure students can pick up the coloredpencils correctly.

Going against medicalconsensus that held thatchildren with cerebral palsyand other movement dis-orders couldn’t improve theirmotor skills, Petõ theorizedthat through intensive guidedinstruction and repetitivemovement, children sufferingfrom neuromotor disorderscould eventually learn tocarry out tasks that manythought impossible.

“Not a lot of people hereknow about conductive edu-cation,” says Prueitt, whose4-year-old daughter, Archer,

suffers from cerebral palsy.“When it’s your child, you dowhat you have to do.”

Prueitt, the pastry chef andco-founder of Tartine, has leftthe daily operation of thebakery in the hands of herhusband, Chad Robertson,Tartine’s baker and co-found-er. Creating the first school inSan Francisco dedicated totreating children with ce-rebral palsy, spina bifida andother motor challenges hasbecome a full-time job.

Describing the currentlyaccepted special educationenvironment of mainstream-ing kids with physical disa-bilities, Prueitt says, “Thechild is sitting in a classroomwith the other kids, trying tolearn but having absolutelyno physical activity whatso-ever. And when they go onrecess — which is when ev-erybody is finally able to getall their energy out and so-cialize — these children can-

not participate. It just seemedreally upside down to me.”

Feeling the need for some-thing beyond standard specialeducation for her daughter,Prueitt researched alternativeapproaches to pediatric ce-rebral palsy. The work beingdone at the Conductive Learn-ing Center in Grand Rapids,Mich., caught her attention, and she enrolled Archer therefor two four-week sessions. She was so impressed by howher daughter and others wereable to move and thrive in thegroup setting that she decidedto open a similar school in SanFrancisco. (There is one otherconductive learning school inCalifornia, in Los Angeles, andabout 30 nationwide.)

“Every parent wants theirkid to be able to move andwalk,” Prueitt says. “If theycan’t tie their shoelaces be-cause they have poor motorskills, that’s what you wantthem to be able to do.”

On a recent Friday morning,Bernstein and co-conductorOrsi Toth-Petho, also trainedat the Petõ Institute, guidedchildren through a series ofmovements with the aid ofcustomized wooden furniture.

“Congratulations,” Bern-stein tells Drake Becker, 3,commending him on his pos-ture as he lies on top of anelongated desk that doubles asa platform. When Drake suc-cessfully crosses his legs,Bernstein declares, “You are

the teacher!” He then gets toissue the sing-song instruc-tions to his fellow classmates.“I put my left heel up to myright knee,” he says.

GuidingLater, Bernstein guides 5-

year-old Malia Sanchez in anexercise to move her legsthrough the basic motionsinvolved in walking. The littlegirl holds the back of a chairwhile Toth-Petho slowly slidesit forward. Gripping the chair’sladder-like rungs tightly, shetentatively steps forward.

The school will start smallwith a class of five childrenand two “conductors” (Petõ-method educators prefer theterm to “teacher”). Prueitt andBernstein hope to expand withprograms for infants and after-school instruction for olderchildren.

The high teacher-to-studentratio and the meticulouslyconstructed furniture makethe school a costly venture.San Francisco’s pricey realestate only adds to the ex-pense. The St. John School inGlen Park provided a room for

the summer camp free ofcharge, but Prueitt is stillscouting a permanent locationfor the school.

Prueitt and Bernstein haveyet to finalize the exact cost oftuition. The school in GrandRapids charges about $6,000per semester.

“My goal,” Prueitt says, “isto have at least one spot perclass, if not more, to offer to achild who would not otherwisebe able to afford it.” A Hungar-ian dinner and silent auctionwere held earlier this summerat Bar Tartine to help cover the

costs of starting up the school.Prueitt plans to hire a profes-sional fundraiser to help keepthe school afloat.

Typically, children attend aconductive learning school forabout two years before goingon to join mainstream elemen-tary schools. Conductive edu-cation’s main goal is to makestudents more physically andemotionally prepared to enterclassrooms where most chil-dren don’t have motor dis-orders.

SpectrumBut some medical profes-

sionals say that research onconductive education is notconvincing. “The studies I’veseen, unfortunately, have notshown robust findings,” saysMonica Rivera, a clinical facul-ty member at UCSF medicalcenter with experience treatingpediatric cerebral palsy.

Much like autism, cerebralpalsy comes in a wide spec-trum. Some cases are severelydebilitating while others arehardly noticeable. Noting thattreatments need to be tailoredto each child, Rivera says,“Conductive education maywork for some kids but maynot for others.”

However, based on the re-sults she says she’s seen,Prueitt’s faith in conductiveeducation remains strong.

“We all want our kids inmainstream schools,” saysPrueitt. “That being said, I’dhate for Archer to feel likeshe’s in a zoo. I don’t want thatkind of inclusion.”
