In 1914, French motor car manufacturer - Delage - developed a revolutionary new racing car -

the Delage Type S.

today, only one survives. But after 100 years, its unique engine block failed. what do you do?

You clone it.

Making a Digital Copy

As there was no information other than the original engine, re-manufacturing was done by:

scanning the original block - accurately capturing every detail.

CAD modelling a virtual block - checking, simulating and modifying as required.

Designing and CAD modelling a sand mould to be 3D printed.

A trial mould set was printed using the only sand printer in Australia

The Voxeljet VX1000 at CSIRO Lab22.

The result was excellent and suitable for machining. However, we cut it up to identify areas for

improvement. The production casting must be as close to perfect as the sand casting process allows.

Minor modifications were made before the production mould was printed and poured.

The result is a near perfect reproduction casting which is approved for final machining.
