Skype for Business”
Todays Presentation
Everybody stand upPlease keep standing if…You know all flavors of Express RouteYou know all connection options of Express RouteYou know all decision points for Express Route
You know Express Route well enough to explain this to this audience
But you promised exercise!
Todays plan:Explain Express RouteExplain the benefits of using Express RouteExplain how to test if Express Route is beneficial to you
Explain the why behind Express Route, help you with the “if” and point you to the How of
Express Route
We’re going to take a different approach

Intro into Express Route
What is Express Route? What is Express RouteManaged connectionOffered by qualified partnersBetween the customers Edge and the Office 365 Edge
Benefits of Express RoutePredictable performanceAllows to apply Quality of Service and Enterprise-Grade Resilience
Edges?(Network) EdgeDevice that serves as the delimiter between the internal and external networkCustomer Edge is where the customer traffic leaves the private network and enters the MPLS Cloud or InternetMicrosoft Edge is the “Azure Front Door” where traffic leaves the internet or Express Route and enters the Azure Network
Skype for Business EdgeDefined Role in Skype for BusinessPhysical or virtual server hosting the Edge RoleIs the delimiter between the internal and external pieces of the SfB TopologyMost Customers have their SfB Edge close to their Network Edge.Azure has their Edges (Azure Front Door) not necessarily close to the SfB Edge
Express Route Benefits Voice, video, data transfers need to be treated differently Voice and video sensitive to latency and jitter Classify traffic and tag with appropriate DSCP value Separate queue each traffic class Fully managed Connection Can offer a 99.9 percent financially backed SLA

NAT
• Client connectivity to Microsoft Cloud services (Microsoft peering) • Customer must NAT all traffic into Microsoft with valid public IPv4 addresses• Microsoft must be able to validate the ownership of the IPv4• Connectivity from Microsoft to Customer servers on public IPs (Microsoft peering) • Example: ADFS server• Customer must NAT all traffic from Microsoft destined to valid IPv4 addresses within the customer

• Worldwide Coverage• Express Route is available in all regions of the world• Localized Office 365 Edges are available• For geographically dispersed companies, per-region Express Routes are
recommended• Centralizing an Express Route Connection could add additional delays
• Recommended deployment scenario• Verify if a location benefits from Express Route• Choose the right connection model• Don’t centralize traffic if possible

Performance goalsFor optimal Skype for Business media quality, the following network performance metrics should be met: Metric Client to Office 365

Click to edit Master title styleImpact of not meeting networking goals Inside your network
All client communication suffers reduced quality; includes PSTN calls, conference calls, peer-to-peer calls; can lead to connection issues and disconnects
Between your network and Office 365
Conferences will suffer from quality issues; PSTN calling (if Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling is deployed) will suffer from quality issues; peer-to-peer calling should not be impactedClients working remotely
(home, coffee shop, hotel)All client communication can be impactedNo, or almost no, control over this
Click to edit Master title styleWhy goals, not requirements? Some goals might not be met
? Geographical distancesUsing a European-based Office 365 tenant for users in Australia means they will not meet all requirements
Environmental circumstancesSome countries have more advanced infrastructuresCertain locations are connected via satellite or broadcast connectionsSome networks you have no control over (coffee shops, hotels)
Investment cost versus gain (ROI)Meeting the goals with old equipment requires investmentSome locations might only have a few users but require a very high investment
While goals should be met, sometimes the costs outweigh the benefits

Express Route Decision Points
Perform a Network Readiness Assessment with traffic simulation
this will inventory any requirements for Express Route, either technical or functionalthe traffic simulation will highlight if the network metric goals are being met and if they could be met using Express RouteThe Network Readiness Assessment Essentials contains a traffic simulation that can be used for this
Present Express Route to your customerEducation on Express Route is keyExpress Route is more than “just” a managed connectionA decision should be made on whether or not it helps the customerExpress Route is not a default yes
Walk through decision points & triggersAfter investigating your customer needs, present whether or not Express Route addresses those needsExpress Route can address both technical as well as functional needs
Road to Express Route
Click to edit Master title styleWhen to consider Express Route
If a 99.9% SLA is required
If a managed connection is required
If a highly available connection is required
When QoS is a requirement
If guaranteed bandwidth is required
If it improves network performance

Prognosis UC AssessorComplete Network Assessment and Troubleshooting Solution for Skype for Business
Advanced:• Analyze and troubleshoot the identified performance
problems across entire network• 1-Click network device troubleshooting • Comprehensive network health report with analysis of
individual network device performance• Root cause analysis and prescriptive remediation guidance• Continual proactive ongoing assessment over time
Essentials:• Auto-detect closest Skype for Business Online edge
points• Test round-trip performance between local sites to SFBO
edge. • Measure latency, packet loss, jitter, and more for audio,
video, and app sharing traffic to SFBO edge and back.• Visual performance results against SFBO requirements• Track assessment through entire network path, with WiFi
Signal Strength• Centralized management and aggregated results across
all testing sites• Operate multiple tests from multiple sites at once.

Examples
Scenario 1“Customer is planning on implementing Skype for Business Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling”
The customer executes Network Readiness Essentials with Traffic Simulation Add-onDuring traffic simulation, it is found the network has an average packet loss of 4 percentAn Advanced assessment is triggered and it is found that the wireless network is at fault. After remediation, the new traffic simulation shows <1 percent packet loss and all other metrics are also green over a 7 day periodNetwork Readiness Essentials uncovers no business needs for Express Route
Based on these actions, the customer decides that Express Route is not needed
Note; even though packet loss was found, and the goals as set in the network metrics were not met, Express Route was not the correct way to move forward. By using the Network Readiness Assessment, the right solution was found and executed on.
Scenario 2“Customer is planning on implementing Skype for Business Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling”
The customer executes Network Readiness Essentials with Traffic Simulation Add-onDuring traffic simulation over a 7 day period, the network metrics are all green.Network Readiness Essentials uncovers the business need for a connection into Office 365 that must be covered with a SLAThe ISP is involved and the ISP can offer a 99.9 percent availability secured by a SLA when using Express Route
Based on these actions, the customer decides that Express Route is needed.
Note; even though all networking metrics were green, and Express Route was not needed to recover from possible networking issues, there was a clear business need for Express Route. Moving forward with Express Route was the right decision in this case.
