• A simple subject may have more than one word. For example, it may be a compound noun, like White House, or a person’s full name, like Principal Scott Knight.

• A simple predicate may have more than one word. A main verb with its helping verbs is called a verb phrase, such as have been voting. A verb phrase is still a simple predicate.

Example: Sojourner Truth was speaking.

In some questions, the simple subject appears between a helping verb and the main verb. However, in a diagram, the locations of the simple subject and the simple predicate always stay the same-subject on the left and predicate on the right of the vertical line.
