This is Dont Walk

This is Dont Walk

In the wake of the 9/11 attacks in 2001, a multina-tional group of St Andrews students, 3000 miles from the epicentre, decided to respond. DONT WALK was born, a symbolic response in essence, its spirit youthful and cosmopolitan, unafraid and unbound by rules. Since the birth of DONT WALK, our underlying message has remained constant: combining the mediums of art, fashion, and per-formance into a fashion show that challenges all forms of violence. We strive to challenge all forms of structural inequality by influencing both public discourse and contributing to organisations that support education and conflict prevention efforts.Over the years we have shifted our focus towards organisations that combat the underlying causes of violence and poverty. As 2015 approaches, we have chosen to go back to our roots in New York and support the Robin Hood Foundation, which focus-es on solving the problems created by social-eco-nomic imbalance. In hosting a variety of events throughout 2014-2015, we aim to convey the moral essence of the Robin Hood Foundation’s intent. We are proud to say that over the past 13 years DONT WALK has grown into the largest privately run stu-dent charity fashion show. This year, we strive to grow and evolve even more by significantly increas-ing our influence and impact. Please reach out to get in contact with our team should you strive to join us in this pursuit.

DON’T WALK has recently supported charities focused on preventing future or resolving current conflicts. Last year alone we worked with ANI-CHRA, which focuses on preemptively stopping conflict in Cameroon, and the Coalition for Work with Psychotrauma and Peace, which worked with victims of conflict. This year DON’T WALK has chosen to support the New York based Robin Hood Foundation, which donated over 182 million dol-lars to fighting poverty in New York last year alone. The Robin Hood Foundation operates using vi-sionary practices that allow it to allocate aid money in the most efficient manner possible to over 240 New York charitable organisations. The Founda-tion takes on numerous problems and works with charities targeting issues ranging from education to hunger and housing. What makes its efforts so ef-fective is the Foundations implementation of a ven-ture capitalist approach and a reliance on metrics that assess the efficacy of its donations. In doing so, Robin Hood avoids funding unproductive projects. Moreover, Robin Hood’s board underwrites all of its operating expenditures, which ensures that 100% of every donation is given directly to charitable causes. The incredible resources that Robin Hood has directed towards bettering New York City, com-bined with its commitment to efficiency and ef-fectiveness, has allowed it to combat poverty and suffering within New York City with unprecedented success. We are truly excited to support this unpar-alleled effort and hope that we can assist the Robin Hood Foundation in every way possible.
