A Louisville man hasbeen charged with sec-ond-degree forgery, sec-ond-degree criminal pos-session of forged instru-ment and theft byunlawful taking or dispo-sition.

Derrick (AKA Derek)Saunders, 27, allegedlyattempted to cash aforged payroll check onthe account of SunriseManor Nursing Homelast September.

According to ChiefDeputy Russell McCoy,Saunders showed his dri-ver’s license as proof ofidentity when he cashedthe forged check at alocal convenience store inthe amount of $384.12.

Saunders was lodgedin the LaRue CountyDetention Center afterbeing transported from

theJeffersonCountyDetentionCenter,accordingto courtrecords.

McCoyplans topresent the evidence tothe grand jury.

“She will speak on theallure of living in smalltown America,” saidLaRue County Chamberof Commerce DirectorJessica Davis, “and Ibelieve residents ofLaRue County can defi-nitely relate to that.”

Huston, a Bardstownresident, formerly ofBloomfield, writes inher book about theofferings of a small townwhile capturing thecharm that small com-munities display.

“We are really excitedfor her to speak,” saidDavis. “I’m sure it willbe very entertaining.”

The cost to attend is$25 per person or $15for children 12 andunder and includes din-ner, the meeting and anawards presentation.

A silent auction willalso be held during theevent.

According to Davisseveral items includinggift cards, centerpiecesand LaRue Countymemorabilia will be upfor bid.

In conjunction withthe event “ a very excit-ing complimentary pic-ture will be taken,” saidDavis. “To see what that

photo willlook likepeople canstop bythe cham-ber office.There isan exam-ple in thedisplaywindow.”

Severalawards will be givenand a graduation cere-mony for LaRue CountyLeadership LaRue par-ticipants will also beheld that evening.

“We are very excitedbecause this is one of

our largest Leadershipclasses,” said Davis.

Doors will open 5:30p.m., with dinner to fol-low at 6 p.m. The meet-ing will begin at 7:15p.m.

Ruby A. Shofner, 81,died 7 a.m. April 27,2012, at her home inWyanet, Ill., surroundedby her loving family.

She was born Feb. 5,1931, in MountSherman to Samuel andEva Clopton DeSpain.She married Grady L.Shofner on Dec. 8, 1951in Princeton, Ill. GradyShofner died in 1994.

She was retired fromHarper Wyman inPrinceton, Ill. and was amember of PrincetonWesleyan Church.

Besides her husband,she was preceded indeath by her parents; adaughter, PatriciaShofner; a brother,Samuel DeSpain Jr.;and a sister MaryEvelyn DeSpain.

She is survived bytwo sons, John (Judy)Shofner of Tiskilwa, Ill.,and Sammy Shofner ofWyanet, Ill.; five sisters,Helen (Emmett) Perkinsof Buffalo, Gertrude(Shelby) Atwell ofSandwich, Ill., Phyllis

Becker ofHodgen-ville, SueHoelzer ofGridley,Ill.,Barbara(Jim)WilkensonofSandwich,Ill.; a

in the LaRue CountyHigh School agrisciencegreenhouse has been ahuge success story. Theseason opening wasApril 16 and sales havebeen strong since then.

The community hastraditionally rallied tosupport the efforts oflocal high school stu-dents by purchasing thevast array of beddingplants and a great selec-tion of high qualityhanging baskets in thearea.

Equally impressive toMisty Bivens, theGreenhouse Technologyteacher, has been theassistance given bynumerous student vol-unteers. They providepersonalized service toevery customer who vis-its the greenhouse.Students from thegreenhouse class answer

questions about individ-ual plant characteristicsand manage the check-out table. Other stu-dents from classes lessspecialized in the area offloriculture, help by car-rying plants, wateringand assisting with prod-uct display.

The greenhouse isopen 8-4 p.m. Mondaythrough Friday and 9a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdaythrough the end of theschool year. Extendedhours will be availableSaturday, May 12 forMother’s Day.

There is a large selec-tion of most plantsavailable, but support-ers should hurry for bestselection. In addition tothe standard cell packsand hanging baskets,the school-based enter-prise also has somerather unusual offer-ings. There are a wide

variety of hanging bas-kets, 10- and 12-inchbaskets of vining super-tunias, vegetable cropsand a wide variety oftraditional beddingplants. Many plantswere grown especiallyfor Mother’s Day gifts.There will be specials asthe school year willcome to a close, but thebest plants are availablenow. They include dis-counts on select hangingbaskets, wave petuniasand geraniums in 4.5-inch pots.

This year there is anew service beingoffered to customers.Many people have afavorite pot that theyuse for their plants, buttrying to fill that pot canbe a burden or they’vepurchased a pot in thepast that they want tore-use. This year youcan have your pot filled

for you for $5 to $15,plus the cost of theplants, cost varies due topot size. There is amenu of plants avail-able. You can have thisdone while you wait oryou can drop your pot offand pick it up later.This is a new way tohelp customers recycleor re-use their favoriteplanter.
