INTRODUCTIONThe last census in England and Wales took place on 27 March 2011. This was also the year of the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton. The resident populationof England and Wales on 27 March 2011 was 56.1 million, a seven per cent (3.7 million) increase since 2001. There were 27.6 million men and 28.5 million women in the two countries. In 2011, four out of every five (81 per cent, 45.5 million) residents of Englandand Wales described themselves as being in good or very good health.
LESSON OVERVIEWThis lesson is designed for children born in 2011 but can be adapted for children born in other years. The children will learn about the year 2011 by looking at the census data from that year and can add to this knowledge by researching events that occurred in 2011.
LEARNING INTENTIONSTo use data to inform our knowledge of the past. To research events from the past.

History KS2
CURRICULUM LINKS AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance, and use them to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends, frame historically-valid questions and create their own structured accounts, including written narratives and analyses.
1. Ask the children which month and year they were born in. You could collect this data in a chart and look for any patterns. Some children in the same class will have been born in 2011, some the year before. (You could use the PowerPoint presentation slides and/or PDF Chart 1, When were we born? via www.letscount.org.uk.)
2. Discuss how many children were born in 2011 and how many in another year. Discuss the difference in number and what might explain this.
3. Share some key events from 2011 with the class. This might include the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, scientists proving that sharks are colour-blind and the last Harry Potter film being released.
You might also decide to focus on scientific discoveries, facts about the UK (who was Prime Minister, for example), popular events, such as pop song number ones (please see the downloadable PDF Chart 2, 2011 Number one songs to save you time!) or world news.
4. Create a ‘true or false?’ fact file about 2011 for children to identify the facts about 2011, drawn from census data and other research. You could also include facts from 2001 and the current year. Children can attempt to sort the facts to determine if they are about 2011 or another year. (Please see the downloadable PDF Chart 3, Fact File, and the PowerPoint presentation slide.)
Provide the class with texts or weblinks so they can research the events in more detail. (Please see the downloadable PDF Chart 4, Useful links, and the PowerPoint presentation slide.)
5. Using what they have discovered about their birth year, children can then work in small groups to create a poster, artwork or fact file to represent the year. Not forgetting to include their birthday!
