UnmannedAerialVehicles(UAVs),alsoknownasDroneshavebecomethelatesttechnologytoseerapidgrowthincapabilitiesoverthepastfewyears.Today,UAVscanbeusedforsearch-and-rescue,mediaaccess,firstresponderassistanceandsurveying/mappingapplications.However,theycanbeusedfornefariouspurposesaswell,requiringthemanysecurityandlawenforcementorganizationstobecomediligentofwhatisflyingintheirairspace.TherearedocumentedcaseswhereUAV’shaveassistedprisonersescapewithtoolsandcellphones,videosofUAV’sequippedwithspycameras,guns,andevenexplosives.Infact,inFebruary2016theFAAsenioradvisoronUAVIntegrationwasquoted“Theexplosivegrowthoftheunmannedaircraftindustrymakesevaluatingdetectiontechnologiesanurgentpriority”.Upuntiltheproliferationofcommercialdrones,allconcentrationforsecuritywasfocusedonground-levelprotection.However,UAVshavenowexpandedtheperimeterwallsreachtoincludeaerialbasedprotectionwithdetectionofUAVsthefirstlineindefenseofthisrapidlyexpandingthreattype

WhenexaminingavailableUAVdetectiontechnologies,toachieveoptimumthreatprotection,anorganizationschecklistshouldinclude:• Theabilitytoachievelocationingand

trackingofthethreattoincludeoperator.• Abilitytobeusedwithoutneedfor

specializedlicensingand/orskilledoperator• Theabilitytoefficientlyoperateregardless
